Agreed. I like how there is no true right or wrong in Stardew. You can easily make a case for Joja in the game. They have projects to help improve communities, they save lives when people pass out in caves, they offer jobs and cheap prices.

Personally, I'm glad they went the direction they did. I don't think an aggressive, confrontational villain really fits w/ the tone of the game. Morris might be manipulative and underhanded but he's not outright hostile. If you're trying to get a bunch of people to give you money and sign stuff over to you, it's generally not a good idea to insult them to their faces.
Yeah. Morris is pretty passive. He just represents the evil evil joja and tries to sell you his membership, and that's about it. And that's for the better I think. The game is geat as it is, without constant nagging from some idiot. Just play and enjoy. Also we got the meanest, most powerfull villan of them all, the mighty pam. More of that is just overkill.

i could think of an improvement. have the kids grow up more. maybe to at least teen or something they talk do things around the farm. depending on who you marry will determent some random looks and personality. at random they pick one of the younger people in town and make friends.
That would be cool, but then they would have to make it so that all of the NPC's get older along with your kids, which wouldn't make sense because you can literally play the game for hundreds of years and everyone looks the same. Why would your kids be any different?

I don't think anyone would care that much if your kids grew up at least a little but no one else did, it's technically more realistic that at least two characters keep aging rather than 0 characters aging.

I don't really like the idea of a confrontational badguy for Stardew. It seems kinda weird that someone trying to sell the locals on Joja would be such a prick to everyone and expect results. Morris makes a lot more sense since he's only a prick to Pierre. That, and it kinda kills the chill vibe to have someone like Dobson.
Considering the dialogue was him on the phone to his employers he most likely would've presented himself as a better person than he really is, like a walmart manager
morris coming into pierre's shop to hand out joja coupons kinda sells the vibe of a confrontational bad guy to me, especially because the game could have really done a lot with the aspect of "I'd love to support small business, but I just can't afford not to shop at walmart"
I don't know how I feel about Dobson. Honestly, I found Pierre and Joja Mart's rivalry pretty interesting simply because there was no right or wrong. The town gets fixed up either way, through money and effort or item-harvesting and alien assistance, and you could argue that fixing the community center is worse, because Joja Mart becomes a ruin in place of the community center if you do, while siding with Joja Mart utilizes both buildings in the end with no pariah of a building leaving a black mark on the town. Joja Mart's prices are supposedly better than Pierre's as well, which would be better for the townspeople. Morris had alluded to being similar to Dobson personality-wise, but the only douchey thing he did (save for some slightly harsh words during his final confrontation that were kind of deserved, since he was basically run out of town) was advertise his store's sale inside Pierre's store (which is, admittedly, kinda messed up). To be honest, I'd usually be all like "Aw, but this store is local, with fresher produce, and it's always good to support small, local businesses. What is Stardew Valley, if not a nod to the nostalgia of a small, locally inclusive town? And I would. If it wasn't for Pierre. Pierre isn't much better than Morris (rather, I think he's worse), potentially initiating a fist fight with Morris after the man had already lost, and don't get me started about him claiming the produce I sell him was grown from his own garden when he sells it to the residents. Those strawberries were mine, Pierre, stop telling Jodi otherwise! ...Screw Pierre.
Yeah that’s fair. However, I always fix the Community Center because it makes the Junimos happy when you give them bundles. Also, from Emily’s dialogue I learned that the Joja company is harming the environment, something that I care about a lot. I feel like it’s the right thing to do, Joja doesn’t seem make anyone in the town really happy whereas a lot of people are excited when the Community Center is restored.
The price thing is temporary at best. Walmart does the same thing in real life, they move into a small town, undercut the small mom and pop shops until they drive them out of business and then they jack up the prices. Then 10-15 years down the line corporate decides that the town isn't profitable enough, closes the store, and leaves the town with nothing. I personally have seen them do it to 2 local rural towns in my area. The only saving grace for the communities is that Dollar General is all to eager to swoop in and build a store seemingly overnight and pick at the leftovers.

IIRC, it doesn't require spending cash to fix up either, just turning straight into the warehouse. But that feels pretty icky. It's like you fool the Junimos into working for Joja somehow.
I'd love a "hard mode/endgame" function. After you complete the community center joja doesn't go down without a real fight. Morris gets fired and replaced by Dobson. Then... it gets real :D
I’m interested to see what would have happened gif concerned ape left this in the game. I think that it would be cool to see how it would play out if stardew valley had a story. I thought of some ideas: If you gave the community center to Joja, you would get an evil ending, that would also somehow affect the town. For instance, shutting down Pierre’s, forcing everyone to shop at Joja. Joja would up the prices, making everyone upset, but you would get a permanently discount, since you helped Joja get their warehouse. If you upgrade the community center, it would give you a good ending, shutting down the joja mart and getting Dobson fired or something. Pierre’s would get more business, which would also give you a discount there. Also, if you were married, you could have an extra scene with your person,making the good ending even more satisfying. The endings would be unique to the person you married. For example, Sebastian’s ending would be different from Emily’s ending. Of course the story could be optional, still giving you the freedom that you have in the game. Just some ideas I came up with :)
I actually really like that idea. I loved finishing the community center but being able to really stick it to a villain honestly would have made it even more satisfying. When that guy showed up to whine about Joja closing I was all "Who is this guy again?"

I feel like he would have tried too stop your farm from growing. IE, some mornings you may find him doing things like trappling crops, breaking fences, or attracting crows some how. Or stoping you from entering the mines or taking the bus on some days
I think it wouldve been kinda weird if we had a confrontational villain cause the town is very docile. It would feel really put of place and part of the reason I like stardew is because it doesnt have someone constantly trying to make everything suck. So I can do things at my pace and how I want to without worrying something would force me to hurry and do something I didnt want to do. I guess if they added a mod or extension with him in it, itd be interesting to see. Maybe a more challenging thing. But as far as the game itself. I definitely appreciate the freeforall-ness of it.
With Dobson, we may have a situation like in the show Gravity Falls where the bad guy just pops up every now and then and then adds some sort of quest or mini adventure that puts the whole town at stake.
I kind of wish they had kept Dobson, it might have made Joja feel like it was actually invasive. Through all my games I pretty much ignore Joja and never really feel like it's there, unless I have to find Shane. It kind of feels obsolete. Having the tension with Dobson could gave been a good thing.
So, this would have come after Grandpa and the player's existential crisis at Joja Corp? Hmm. Dobson is an interesting addition which would have made the threat of Joja feel more present. As it is now, I hardly remember it exists at all. The bus is really neat and could have enhanced the game, but only if used elsewhere instead. I think ConcernedApe made the right call by removing it as an intro.
This is really interesting to learn about. I love seeing how projects evolve as they progress. Personally, I like the normal intro. And the non-confrontational view taken by Concerned Ape. But I have to admit, it did feel like something was supposed to be in there since the game assumes that you already know how to play. Thank you for sharing! I feel like if they had included Dobson in the final version the villain dynamic would be a bit like harvest moon hero of leaf vallley where they're hostile to you but not really super involved beyond a plot inforced timeline.

My thoughts: If you beat the game via junimos, get everything repaired etc. Maybe Dobson could appear as the Joja CEO to have a confrontation. Or perhaps if you get everything repaired etc via the Joja scenario, and you become rich, Dobson comes by to promote you or something, pffff.
4:04 I'm pretty sure in game (the final cut) you can see the bus driver (not Pam) take you to Stardew Valley through the window of the bus (where you'd usually see Pam through when she takes you to and from the desert) in this cutscene right after you quit your job at Joja Corp, I'm probably just pointing out the obvious but I thought it was cool...

You know the grampa cutscene at the start which you can tick on and off, this should be like that ''have extended bus scene'' . Some things could change of course but it would be fun just on the bus, talking to your stardew friends, also there should be some more npcs from town not just haley. :P
Personally I would've loved to have a bad guy, even for just a little bit of the game. Joja seemed so minor to me in most of my playthroughs that I didn't even know you could sell out to them at all.
Yeah same tbh, it would’ve been cool to have like a “villain” type character in the game but I feel like then it would loose its originality, Stardew valley has a certain feel to it and I think it would’ve ruined it if he had left Dobson in 👨🦯
It would be funny if you have that as a special cutscene, that is kinda hard to expirience. For Example if you befriend all villagers but haven't completed Joja or the community center, you would have something like the gridball game it shanes cutscene or a concert of the band. When you are driving back to the valley, this cutscene or something similar will happen which brings dobsen in the game. But I think it shouldn't happen out of nowhere. You would have to know that the cutscene et cetera are there to achieve it. Like the Junimo Plush or other things that you only find when you know about them.
I really like the bus and the idea of seeing Haley on it before you get to the valley! It ties in well with her dialogue about shopping and cities too. I see why Dobson was scrapped but I wish they’d kept the bus intro it’s cute. The old woman commenting about you being liable to hurt someone was funny too

So I can do things at my pace and how I want to without worrying something would force me to hurry and do something I didnt want to do. With Dobson, we may have a situation like in the show Gravity Falls where the bad guy just pops up every now and then and then adds some sort of quest or mini adventure that puts the whole town at stake.
I kind of wish they had kept Dobson, it might have made Joja feel like it was actually invasive. Through all my games I pretty much ignore Joja and never really feel like it's there, unless I have to find Shane. It kind of feels obsolete. Having the tension with Dobson could gave been a good thing.
So, this would have come after Grandpa and the player's existential crisis at Joja Corp? Hmm. Dobson is an interesting addition which would have made the threat of Joja feel more present. As it is now, I hardly remember it exists at all. The bus is really neat and could have enhanced the game, but only if used elsewhere instead. I think ConcernedApe made the right call by removing it as an intro.
This is really interesting to learn about. I love seeing how projects evolve as they progress. Personally, I like the normal intro. And the non-confrontational view taken by Concerned Ape. But I have to admit, it did feel like something was supposed to be in there since the game assumes that you already know how to play. Thank you for sharing! I feel like if they had included Dobson in the final version the villain dynamic would be a bit like harvest moon hero of leaf vallley where they're hostile to you but not really super involved beyond a plot inforced timeline.

My thoughts: If you beat the game via junimos, get everything repaired etc. Maybe Dobson could appear as the Joja CEO to have a confrontation. Or perhaps if you get everything repaired etc via the Joja scenario, and you become rich, Dobson comes by to promote you or something, pffff.

4:04 I'm pretty sure in game (the final cut) you can see the bus driver (not Pam) take you to Stardew Valley through the window of the bus (where you'd usually see Pam through when she takes you to and from the desert) in this cutscene right after you quit your job at Joja Corp, I'm probably just pointing out the obvious but I thought it was cool...

You know the grampa cutscene at the start which you can tick on and off, this should be like that ''have extended bus scene'' . Some things could change of course but it would be fun just on the bus, talking to your stardew friends, also there should be some more npcs from town not just haley. :P

Personally I would've loved to have a bad guy, even for just a little bit of the game. Joja seemed so minor to me in most of my playthroughs that I didn't even know you could sell out to them at all.
I think that having a "villain" in stardewvalley would add more story to the game.

Yeah same tbh, it would’ve been cool to have like a “villain” type character in the game but I feel like then it would loose its originality, Stardew valley has a certain feel to it and I think it would’ve ruined it if he had left Dobson in 👨🦯

It would be funny if you have that as a special cutscene, that is kinda hard to expirience.
For Example if you befriend all villagers but haven't completed Joja or the community center, you would have something like the gridball game it shanes cutscene or a concert of the band.
When you are driving back to the valley, this cutscene or something similar will happen which brings dobsen in the game.
But I think it shouldn't happen out of nowhere. You would have to know that the cutscene et cetera are there to achieve it.
Like the Junimo Plush or other things that you only find when you know about them.
I really like the bus and the idea of seeing Haley on it before you get to the valley! It ties in well with her dialogue about shopping and cities too. I see why Dobson was scrapped but I wish they’d kept the bus intro it’s cute. The old woman commenting about you being liable to hurt someone was funny too
