    Just got home from dialysis where I read your latest chapter with interest. I wasn’t aware you had to fly a flag of courtesy below your starboard spreader. But why? They know where they are, n’est pas? And they certainly know where you’re from. Duh. Anyway, you’re off into the wild, blue/green/grey yonder (3 months since). Have a great exploring experience. Fair winds and a following sea bless you.

      @FollowIntrepidBear  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Bill, sorry to hear you are having to have dialysis. As far as I can make out the Courtesy flag is just that, to show courtesy and respect to the country you visit. The points you make about the practicalities make sense but I think it’s one of those things steeped in maritime tradition around the world. Thanks for you comments and good wishes 😊🇬🇧🇫🇷⛵️

    Great footage as usual. Shame we missed you in Brittany - but I think we were in the uk at the time.
    Hope you’ve got all the EU paperwork/visas sorted now.

      Thanks Robin….yes real shame. Apart from Brest we didn’t do much of Brittany at all which was also a shame but we were pushing south. Maybe you can come and find us somewhere in the Med in the next couple of years 😊⛵️

    That was brilliant cousin! Very professional and nice to see what you've been upto .... Why did you switch to engine overnight?

      Thanks cousin James 😊 We only switched to the engine overnight as the wind died! ⛵️💨⛵️

      @@FollowIntrepidBear Understood.. but what I should have asked was (being a gentleman of leisure) what was the consequences of being late or could you have gone so far off course that it would have been dangerous?

    • @FollowIntrepidBear
      @FollowIntrepidBear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamesbliss396 Ah ok... I see what you mean. There are a few reasons but I guess i'd have to admit that the main one is simply impatience to get across! There is also the fact that lying in a rolling sea not moving is very uncomfortable. Often, in open sea, no wind doesn't equal flat calm as the swell can come from miles away. A moving boat is more stable and if nothing else you suffer the discomfort for a shorter time! We wouldn't have been pushed dangerously off course but there was a storm headed our way in a couple of days so ultimately we wouldn't want to hang around out there too long! But, indeed, the main reason is simple impatience and comfort! 😊⛵

    You just set sail out of the UK?
    Did you need customs clearance further procedures before you leftt the UK to sail to another country?

    • @FollowIntrepidBear
      @FollowIntrepidBear  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There is a form you send to customs to tell them you’re leaving, it may be online now but that’s all you need to do as a Brit sailing out of the U.K. 😊🇬🇧

    The French and their refusal to speak English unless you say a French word is notorious around the world.

    • @FollowIntrepidBear
      @FollowIntrepidBear  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We did have a wry smile in a Greek restaurant watching a French family having to speak English to communicate with the Greek waiter. But we can’t really blame people for wanting to speak their own language and we try to make the effort where we can. It’s not lost on us how lucky we are to be native English speakers when communicating around the world 😊

    • @richardstuivenberg4618
      @richardstuivenberg4618 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FollowIntrepidBear Hahaha yes thats true. But the French take it to another level. Imagine if i would need someone to speak Dutch before i start talking English. I would have zero conversation abroad. I guess thats just the Dutch culture, we like speaking other languages. Thats why we are so good at buisness around the world for such a tiny country. 😄
