  • Sometimes I like to pretend Oberstein knew about the Terraist plot to assassinate Yang Wenli but conveniently forgot to tell anyone. ;)

    I always wondered how far in the future the narrator is.

    • @pattersong6637
      @pattersong6637 3 ปีที่แล้ว +131

      Per the books, the narrator is far enough from the future that he can refer to Mecklinger's memoirs and Dusty Attenborough's memoirs as the source material for his understanding of the Empire and the Alliance, so there has to be at least one generation gap there, but I assume it's significantly more. Hundreds of years, maybe.

      @@pattersong6637 in the anime I remember them mentioning how the Milky Way (where the story is set in) is significantly smaller to what the narrator's generation lives in. It should be at the very start of the series.

      @@arjouuh7129 I don't think so. That contradicts the whole point of the story. Even though they lived far far in future and space, human lives remained the same and history repeated itself, warring nations and people discussing what's the best form of governorship. 作者は銀河英雄伝説の原型となったと思われる作品として、銀河のチェス ゲーム という未完の作品を持っており、その作品の世界観設定(37世紀)の説明において、過去の歴史的出来事としてヤンウェンリーとラインハルト、ユリアンが出てきます。これは一つのヒントになる気がします。

    Saying he didn't think very highly of himself is noteworthy. Despite his great intelligence and foresight, he didn't achieve great feats for himself, and always acted for the benefit of the Empire. The question is, would Oberstein if tried, become something like Reinhardt? I wonder if the books were any different.

      oberstein wasn't likeable and he didn't inspire loyalty, he could have probably run a n.korea kind of deal for a while but he had a habit of rubbing people the wrong way just by saying facts bluntly and chastising people in public without caring about the appearances, as he himself said "the universe won't weep should the oberstein name die out" even reinhardt didn't like him as a person he only valued him as an advisor and i think he kind of knew he needed someone like obesrstein to be the villain at times

    • @ddwkc
      @ddwkc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I think he was on the extreme of diligence and also dedicated to what he believed to be right. At the same time he wasn't really ambitious and knew his own limitations like lack of charisma. He just wanted a position high enough to execute his plans and ideas. Not more than that. He didn't want or believed in glory to himself. He just wanted to make a difference and be the agent of change, but he didn't want leadership himself. Leadership was just a tool to achieve something. He saw only Reinhardt was worthy of being the emperor.
      At the same time he probably knew he himself was a problem and was aware of all the grudges his actions created. As long he managed to create a good foundation to the new empire, he himself was expendable.

      Yang would absolutely get it but not care. He's fully aware that history shows that politics is a dirty business, and that creating and sustaining a peaceful and (approximately) just state of affairs can require all sorts of Machiavellian maneuvering.
      He just doesn't have the stomach for it: all Yang wants is to study, drink tea, and not be an asshole. His whole problem is that when you also happen to be a military genius on whose leadership everyone you love depends, "not being an asshole" means having, and using, a lot of power.

    Personally, I like to think I used to be like Reinhard in my youth, but now I only want to become a decent Oberstein.
