A tid bit of historic information: at 3:36 when Heir talks about how the wedge would be good for pulling through gaps; thats actually why the wedge would be used in history, when they wanted to plow through the lines and just get through them, so the fact that i see this in here makes me think that this should be used for the points when u want to crash right through a unit
Thank you for all these videos, they are awesome and I'm learning a ton even after a few hundred hours of playing Rome 2! Very well done and great work man!
I'm glad you made these vids and not make fun off new players (like myself now). I only play Imperator Augustus and Empire Divided and thinking about buying Attilla. I have lots off fun with the game. I can manage my provinces well. And in battle sometimes I struggle and make some stupid mistakes. It's a learning curve. I have fun that's what counts. I love history!
Good video and thanks for putting the effort it on it - I rarely play online but this has tempted me to brush up on the other factions and venture online. Looking forward, as always, to your next one!
5:12 THE TESTTUDIO FORMATION in Battle: I guess he became the victim of early Hollywood movies were the TESTITUDO was used ths way as with CLEOPTATRA (1963).
I'm not sure of you've covered this in earlier videos, but I think it deserves some attention in this series; What's the difference between melee attack and weapon damage and what's the difference between melee defence and armor?
Melee attack is the units chance of hitting an enemy is a fight. Wepon damage is the wepon's quailty. Like a hoplite's spear and a Sheild Bear's quailty sarisa. Armour is armor. Melee defense is a unit's chancing of dodging a hit in a fight. He has covered this a lot in random battles.
Hi Heir, is there a fact sheet/matrix somewhere where you can lookup what your army should look like facing another particular faction? When I play faction X and I'm up against faction Y, then my best bet on army compostion should be this and I should use that army with strategy Z (unit a to counter unit type b, etc)
hi heir Do you have any idea how to direct your arty to perform a ground-attack i.e. i though i saw you use it in your Caesar in Gaul campaign where u directed your arty to shoot in front of the enemy ladders and siege equipment. cheers!
I think Flying Wedge has better penetration somehow, like in Shogun 2. At least that's how I felt when I use Flying Wedge formation XD I feel like it's better at "punching a hole" in an enemy's unit. I'm still new to the game, just started playing Shogun 2 3 weeks ago and recently bought Rome 2 :D
Hey Heir! Am I correct in thinking that splitting the Arverni army in two parts of equal size to force a fight on the flanks would have been the most efficient way to deal with your Roman army? I find it hard to come up with tactics to counter that, as any maneuvering to meet the two armies at the same time would weaken your position. If so, how does one deal with such a split-up army? Thanks for the vids, they do help me brush up on my battle skills.
can you explain what makes a good pike formation and what you need to do to keep it reinforced. Could you show us how to counter heavy troops while also holding the rest of the battlefield. could you discuss cost effectiveness in detail.
Mate great vids loving it! Is there any such thing as a good “all round army” to build in campaign mode? Something you can have as a good standing army either for attack or defence?
Helo Guy i have set a faction vote video for attila. Look at it an vote Please i Will set link in the next reaction. Heir again a very Nice video for beginners i think.
Hey Heir I know you have done videos on charging before but I haven't found much on inf vs inf charging. Are there special techniques for knowing when to brace against a charging unit or when to counter charge? Should certain units charge against some and brace against others or should you always unit the same units the same way?
I find the best way to use rome is more or less the same way the real army was set up. Mainly hastati with a a bunch of trillarii and then some elite legionaries to deliver the killing blow. Cav is really only for messing with skirmishers and maybe the odd rear charge if you can get around the enemy cav. There skirmishers are best used to kill heavy infantry or cav that gets close unless you want the aux units. Mainline trillarii is a death sentence as you can't really bring enough of them and they aren't really even as good as hoplites. Oh and the formation attack that rome does is a thing they got from the greeks and as real rome found out it isn't as good as they had hoped. Last thing why are royal peltas so good at ruining my carefully layed out assault?
You do realise that Hastati are pre- marian and legionaries are post- marian right? They didn't fight together, esentially, hastati were part of the unprofessional army, youths without much money who were called upon during wars. Then Giaus Marius reformed the army. Legionaries were professional soldiers, paid to be soldiers. Hastati and legionaries never fought together.... That or i suggest you reword your comment as it's just occured to me what you might be meaning :)
Ok. How do you deal with horse archers. I was playing campaign ... and my army got slaughtered from afar ... They just kept kiting ... and I could never catch up to them. The dmg from missiles pilled up ... and eventually I just lost. Had I autoresolved I would have won easily ... but I wanted to fight ... and ... ._________.
Bring lots of slingers. They can out-range horse archers and despite slingers having relatively low missile damage, they will easily kill horse archers due to their lack of armor and shields. Also, bring lots of cheap spears to act as missile sponges so that your slingers won't take too much damage.
Spearmen with javelins to screen and slingers. If you are facing medium o heavy horsearchers then I like to use light cav to catch the slower horse archers and then follow up with a heavier cav to support after they catch the horse archers of follow up with spears.
@@thegod04 I hate the word CAV reminds to much at the German short for Coffee I grew up with; Kaff instead of Kaffee. Both have exactly the same pronounciation KAFF was very widly heared around the late Sixties and early Seventies.

Fighting at night was pretty unrealistic from what I have understood, Though it did potentially happen (as indicated by the battle of Gaugamela where the Persians expected a Macedonian attack at night). Battles are already incredibly chaotic, why would a commander decide to fight at night where his own men could potentially be destroyed by their own.
Because your enemy could also be destroying their own. So if you have a smaller force you could probably manage that easier than a huge army, minimizing friendly kills. And if you can catch your enemy unprepared and out of formation you'd already have a huge advantage. One of my favorite examples of this was one that I read when I was a christian, In judges 7 (15-25 to be more exact) where they fool their foes into believing they are being attacked by superior numbers, causing confusion and ultimately getting them to route. ( no clue about the validity of the story though :P, but it gives an idea about why)
PantheraLeoKing yes but that was only because of direct intervention from God. Armies took measures to ensure everyone knew who was on each others side.

his name is based off another total war youtuber called the 'prince of macedon'. Basically POM was one of the first total war youtubers and Heir wanted to comment on one of his videos in which he was featured, so made a "copy" name a.k.a Heir of Carthage.
Why don't first time players go research on factions in history books and study how the factions instead of game mechanics? I used different builds based on historical sources. For Rome, I used post-Marian (late Republic and Imperial) legions against factions who fought in the time. I used pre-Marian legion against factions in the time. Noble is synonym for Elite which people falsely claimed due to their prices. Game mechanics is different, but history is a different story.
Boromir Thefreeman No, pikes are amazing in campaign because the A.I. doesn't know how to avoid them and doesn't spam missiles (as much) anymore. Elite pikes or pikes in chokepoints chew through the A.I. units like nothing else. I think I had a town defense where a pike unit had some 500 kills on it by the end.
Lucas Stecz maybe you are using them correctly because Alexander used more support units to assist the pikes. Theuros spears and swords along with missile units can assist Pike unit. Cavalry served as the hammer to hit the enemy in the rear while the pike is deadly upfront.
Guys I'm talking multiplayer. In campaign, the AI is stupid enough to run straight into piles. Real players however, are not. Low armor and slow, any decent player just focus fires on them and they are gone in a minute.
Heir, just so you are aware this may be the greatest 'How to...' Series ever made. I love it man! Keep it up.

I like that heir's advice for beginners against a charger faction is basically a pre-marian army :)
Or also a late roman army
You know your stuff. I learned a lot through the year with your videos of Rome II.
Once again, thank you so much for the videos Heir. I really appreciate all the advice and insight you give. Guys like me need all the help we can get.

It is a shame that online play encourages spamming o/p units though-your opponent may have fielded the more realistic army makeup

Studying macedon historically would tell you to use pikes. Using pikes is a death wish in Rome 2.
