  • On April 14, 2014, a group of friends had a small get-together at their home near the University of Calgary campus in the northwest neighbourhood of Brentwood. It was an amazing group of young people that included an accomplished dancer, an aspiring urban planner, two talented musicians, and a young man who was well on his way to becoming a humanitarian. For the most part, the mood of the party was laid back and relaxed. No one could have predicted the terrifying turn the night would take and how quickly it would all unravel. It was a day that left a scar on the soul of the city -- the biggest mass killing in Calgary’s history.
Crime Beat is a true crime series that takes viewers deep into some of Canada’s most infamous criminal cases. Based on the highly successful podcast hosted by Nancy Hixt, Crime Beat showcases the best investigative crime reporting from the Global News reporters who covered the stories in real time. Using extensive archives and intimate family interviews, each week Crime Beat reveals new details that go beyond the news headlines: giving a voice to victims and their families, unraveling how each case was solved, and exploring lasting impacts on the community and justice system.

This is what every true-crime show should include; a highlight of the victim/victims. It humanizes them & gives a face by sharing their passions, & hearing from people who’s lives are irrevocably changed. I appreciate that. Too often, true-crime gets exploited by media making it easy to forget the living, breathing human beings affected & still suffering.

They did a really good job on focusing on each of the victims life and making them all special . So often you see one victim mentioned everywhere in the news and loved by the public and the rest briefly mentioned only as names.

N Also - That is why we're always told to never go to bed angry; to settle an argument before parting with someone; to say "I love you" when you drop your kid at high school even though they'd rather die than have their friends hear you say it. Make sure that every "last word" you have with someone is something you could live with if you got "the call" before seeing them again.

There's no order of things when it comes to tragedy, even if you forget to say I love you, make sure they know it. Your memories will haunt you if you ill treat people and you don't make it right before losing them. Be safe everyone and treat people as you would like to be treated.

I am watching this with tears pouring down my cheeks . I know exactly how these parents feel , the sorrow and grief they feel. I too lost a child two years ago and there is no pain greater than this. You never get over it as people expect , this is one pain that time does not heal in fact it becomes worse as you see other kids achieve their milestones , and which your child will never achieve. It changes you forever , in a way it’s an end to your living , you just survive.

hope they don't fight to get him released because there's no way he won't hurt other people.

Truly an horrific tragedy. What a terrible and sad loss those 5 young lives were. They were all so smart and good people. The pain their families face every day must be like torture. My heart goes out to all of them and the 5 that went far too soon 💔

This is so sad and heartbreaking 💔💔 All 5 of these kids were such good kids and amazing at everything they did! They had so much promise and bright futures ❤️ This was so senseless and unfair. Prayers to the families and all that were affected. I could never imagine losing either of my sons 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

What an utter waste. Beautiful kids, who might have changed the world.
