They had a slight clue I guess in that Marvel had already said at that time if Ironman was a success then they would start rolling towards a full on Avengers movie one movie at a time. I remember just how amazing and mind blowing that felt at the time first reading that online back then. That is also because they are real. I don't want to shame cgi for ruining everything, i know marvel does practical stuff a lot actually, but the cgi suits always look soo fake. Especially spiderman, they made the real suit which looked awesome, because it wrinkled and everything and looked real. But then they paint over this super tight suit which is so unrealistic, that as much as they try to make it look real with shaders, oir brain still thinks they are odd and unreal

The Crimson Dynamo was discarded early on, but based on the designs they were working on here, it looks like they transferred a bunch of the suit ideas over to Iron Monger.
Everyone involved in making these first iconic suits deserves a tremendous amount of credit. There are so many people attached to a film that it's too easy to overlook everyone's contribution. As an audience, we rarely see the day to day work of these men and women who bring our dreams to life. Wish there were more videos, movies, or documentaries like this. Yeah, true. CGI is only good when done right. Tbh, I am very disappointed on how Iron Man turned out in Infinity War. You can tell that his new suit is CGI in almost every shot in the movie. It is just to shiny and plastic-like.
Watched a ton of SG-1 recently. Absolutely loved just how much of it was practical effects. The use of practical effects alone makes it look 1000x better than most scifi shows today.

These people had no idea that what they built was the pure foundation for a multi-billion dollar suite of cinema. They effectively built THE suit that restarted the superhero genre. Outstanding. Awe-inspiring. Haunting.

Wow. They couldn’t have foreseen what was going to happen 10, 11 years later. Absolutely incredible. This was the start of it all. They took a big chance with Robert Downey Jr.. He and the rest of the men and women that worked on this movie deserve so much credit. A lot of unsung heroes. They have to feel immense pride that it all led to Endgame, even if they don’t work for Marvel/Disney anymore. So many pioneers in this video, and they didn’t even know it.
I am so envious of the craftsmen and women that work at the Stan Winston Studios! Alas, like millions of others, my career took me elsewhere. So, I now vicariously live thru the characters on screen, knowing what really went on off screen!

The original idea was that the villain would be the Mandarin, except he was gonna be just a Chinese billionaire rather than anything mystical like in the comics. (With Obidiah being the man behind the villain, and being set-up for future sequels.) And the Mandarin would've been the one who wore the Iron Monger suit, except it would've been called "the Crimson Dynamo."

But something that ALWAYS bring me joy, was a friend of mine who is an even bigger nerd that I could possibly hope to be; and his reaction when this movie was being made, and when it came out, and when he first saw it, was that of a kid on christmas. I havent talked to him for years, but I wonder how things have been for him, esp with the lead up to endgame.
I think it would take too much time if they still used practical for later film and the current CG i think looks ok. Also Marvel still many practical stuff in GOTG and Captain Marvel.

Jon Favreau did a good job directing these movies, wish he was directing Iron Man 3 as well because I think that was the weaker of the 3 but that's only my opinion it's still a good movie and I love all of them.

back when marvel bothered with building practicals rather than just starting with cg, honestly looked so much better
