The Brandenburg Concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach are not only considered his greatest works among concertos but also classified as a type of “concerto grosso.” These concertos hold a special place in the world of music. The name “Brandenburg” comes from the fact that Bach dedicated these six concertos to Christian Ludwig von Brandenburg, the Margrave of Brandenburg, in 1721. Fortunately, the Margrave was deeply impressed by Bach’s compositions.
The Brandenburg Concerto No.4 may appear to be a concerto grosso, but its first and third movements prominently feature solo parts, making it closer to a “solo concerto.” In this piece, two recorders and one violin take on the solo roles, with the virtuosic violin part in the first movement often outshining the recorders.
브란덴부르크 협주곡(Brandenburg Concerto)은 바흐(Bach)가 남긴 협주곡들 가운데서 최대 걸작일 뿐 아니라 ‘합주협주곡’이란 유형으로 분류되는 협주곡 가운데서도 최고의 경지에 오른 작품으로 평가받습니다. 이 바흐의 여섯 곡의 협주곡들이 ‘브란덴부르크’라는 명칭을 갖게 된 것은 1721년에 바흐가 이 작품들을 브란덴부르크 공 크리스티안 루트비히(Christian Ludwig von Brandenburg)에게 헌정했기 때문인데 다행히도 크리스티안 루트비히 공은 바흐의 협주곡들을 몹시 마음에 들어 했다고 합니다.
브란덴부르크 협주곡 제4번은 겉보기에는 합주협주곡이지만, 1악장과 3악장에서 독주 부분의 활약이 대단히 두드러지기 때문에 ‘독주협주곡’에 더 가깝습니다. 두 대의 리코더와 한 대의 바이올린이 독주자로 등장하는 이 곡에서는 특히 1악장의 독주 바이올린의 기교가 매우 화려해 종종 리코더를 압도하기도 합니다.
