this is so helpful I have cleaned my tank so many times and I got so frustrated because there wasn’t even barely any poop most of the time 😭 it’s definitely the light and I need more plants 😭
This makes sooo much sense! Thank you so much. I had such a good ecosystem going but all of a sudden my fish ate the plants faster than they can grow. Once my plants were nearly gone my green water problem began. I also have some spots on the glass but I’m glad to have a solution to start with now.
I recommend taking a water sample from your aquarium, to your local pet store to get tested before making any changes. As a newbie I watched a video, and thought that I had algae bloom. I treated it with Algae Fix, and I didn’t have algae bloom at all. After getting my water tested, I found out that I had high nitrate, and ammonia levels.
I literally just did over a 50% water change and my water is still green. I am over it. Im so scared I am going to kill my fish. I looks like I never touched it. 😞
Thank you for breaking it down to the newbie level!! All the things you mentioned that you tried and failed are all the things I was just about to try (including chemicals). Getting some plants today!! *fingers crossed*
Fun Fact - In Asia, and more so East Asia, green water is highly praised as one of the natural ways to tell water is healthy. This can then be turned into carpet algae which looks absolutely amazing! and if the walls are cleaned off; would look like grass fields slowly swaying with the water. This is usually done with goldfish, though the practice actually dates back thousands of years to when there were no electronic filters or bubblers. However, understandable some people might not want it for aesthetic reasons.
Add Anacharis to your list of plants. I had an algae bloom on my 20g because the plants I ordered didn't survive transit, so after putting them into my aquarium they never grew and never used up any of the nutrients, so it turned green. I threw some Anacharis in there and in 2 days it was almost clear again. That stuff grows fast and can easily grow floating.
Nice advice! I would add to your great video that they are also phosphate and silicate that can build up green water! Algae love phosphate (like every plants^^) and silicate (you can find silicate in the sand). So if you put a big sand bed you could have a green water stage the time for the algae to consume silicate ;)
Thank for such an informative video. My nano tank which was set up to raise baby guppies was absolutely fine for a few weeks and then out of nowhere the water turned green. I did water changes but it turned green overnight. Once the babies were big enough I moved them into my big tank (which has no such issues), and moved 5 male guppies into the nano tank. The tank has gravel bottom, live plants and sponge filter. On the last attempt at a water change, I used water from the big tank. It lasted a week before its back to green! On your suggestion I'm going to reduce the time the lights are on (which is currently around 10 hrs), and I have ordered some floating plants. I will let you know how I get on! I'm glad to know that the fish are not suffering living in their green environment! Thanks again for the advice 😊
Gonna try your floating plants technique cause I've got Algae bloom for a week plus already. Tried water changes to no effect. Was thinking of UV filters till you recommended plants. The only problem with floating plants is I have planted plants in the substrate and too many floating plants will block the planted ones. So gotta try it out. Thanks for the tips!
Wow! That was an awesome videos! Hands together for KeepingFishSimple! You did an great job explaining everything, buddy! This video was pure information! I learnt a lot! None of my aquariums water has gone green before, but there was a tonne of algae in my pond! I put in algae pond treatment, and it worked! But I think your way would’ve been better! Cool video! I loved it! Keep up the amazing work!!!👍
Excess light is often a trigger for Green Water algae blooms. One way to get rid of an outbreak is to temporarily eliminate light altogether. Turn the aquarium light off and wrap the tank with black plastic, trash can liners or blankets, and keep it covered for a few days.
I cleaned out a massive floating overgrowth of Elodea in my 20-gallon freshwater tank that's been up and running for years so that I could start surface plants, but with all the light suddenly able to penetrate down to the gravel, I got a huge algae bloom. I could put the Elodea back in and drastically cut down the light as you did, to knock back the algae, but wouldn't that also keep enough light from reaching the surface plants that I'm trying to get started?
I have plants, every thing was great, even have 2 out of the 3 plants you mentioned. But my water went cloudy and it was really hard to get rid of. But now it’s going green. Clean, water change, light is limited and low. Snails for algae and to help keep it clean but it goes completely green by the next day after each cleaning or water change. What do you think about a uv light to help keep algae in check?
THANK YOU this is the first video that doesn't make you feel stupid. You'd be surprised how elitist fish people can be! I have several questions: I have a 20 gallon goldfish tank with green water algae. I have removed the substrate, fish and all decorations. I've been using algaecide and this is day 3. It's supposed to be working by now but it's not. How long do I have to wait before putting my fish back in, or adding the plants?
I’m going to give the floating plants and guppy grass a try because I’m having an algae bloom in my 40 gallon breeder Oscar tank. I’ve been doing 80% water changes. I even added a new canister filter and still the same. I don’t want to use any chemicals. It’s a bare bottom tank. Hopefully this works
If I don't have alot of time cuz I work and stuff is it OK to leave like this for a while till the weekend or something algae is good for the fish right its not gonna hurt them?
Just want to let you know your method worked perfectly for me. I loaded my green water aquarium with pothos. It took about 7 days but it is perfectly clear now! Thank you so much!😁
This is great, thankyou :) I have a few different filter pads in mine and always change them out bi-monthly so there is still good bacteria. Im going off to buy some plants this evening as I'm having a little issue. Water is cloudy , its actually not crazy bad but my filters are sooo green within like a day. Do you reccomend I rinse all the filter pads I have before adding the plants? And also do you think if I planted some plants while adding the floating ones, will they do ok, or should I I wait until the algae is clear? I'm so glad I found this video!!!! Its way better than buying the green machine like I was wishing I didn't have to tell my husband about 😅🤭
Hi mate, great video, would you mind giving me the names of the floating plants you mentioned. I tried listening a couple of times and still can't make out the names. Cheers
great video! i'm having the same issue. i have small gravel on the bottom of my tank. what are the names of the plants , water sprout? where do you get that? I'm honestly a bit intimidated by keeping plants in my tank.
water sprite, water wisteria and elodea (anacharis) works great and grows really fast. check out buceplants.com they have excellent plants and give you a huge amount.
Wow thank you for the info. I will try to put floating plants on my aquarium. Please can you reply to me the name of the 3plants that you show on this video? So i can ask the store near to me. Thank you bro
Add Amazon Frogbit to the floating plants list. I've had great luck with that. It grows super fast; so fast that I have to prune it once a week from my nano tank. Just don't use a vinegar dip in Frogbit. A major post-cleaning algae bloom in my tank resulted in me dipping the Anubias, Java Moss & Frogbit. The other plants did fine, but the Frogbit all died off except for a single new leaf! But hey, this plant is so prolific that a single leaf is all I need to start a brand new crop. They are very attractive too & freshwater critters love them.
Thanks for this video, my tank is just starting the turn green, I will try your suggestions but was wondering if you have a ton of floating plats covering the whole surface, will my fish still be able to get there food that also floats on the top?
I’ve had an aquarium for years… like 10 years. First time ever this has happened. I guess it’s from light, idk my sh*t went from clear to green as can be
hello sir i have a vertical standing tank with dimension of( L=25" w=14" H=48" all side mention in inch) it is 290litre tank i would like to hear which filter should i use for my tank it is very difficult to clean it here and there so do suggest a filter for vertical aquarium tank I m really tired cleaning and maintaining the tank
Water sprite and less light didnt work for me. But a submersible UV aquarium light did. A small one inserted into the filter not exposing fish to the light worked after a few days and now it’s never been clearer. Now I use it regularly a few hours at a time.
so i have like 6 live plants in my 20 gal tank and still gets green glass within 24 hr of water change and cleaning. im not sure what to do, ive tried cylcling light 8hr on 8hr off and still blooms. not sure what to do. i suppose ill try floating plants.
Abit of a weird one I got a tank of some one from Facebook when I took the tank home he said he never cycled the tank he had it for 2 weeks and there is a lot of fish in there I’ve never done a fish in tank cycle but should I fast the fish for 5 days and then change the water
I’m trying to carpet my glossostigma so I have high light on a timer for 7hrs a day, and I just had an green algae bloom. What should I do? I don’t want to turn down my light because it would cause my glosso not to carpet.
My tanks are outside without filters one of them gets direct sunlight from early morning to late afternoon.. it's completely green. Is there anything I can do to stop the green other than relocating the tank. I like it where it is. Please help
I have a red eared slider, 10 very large goldfish and 1 plecos. I have a log in my tank that seems to be turning the water a little red/brown hue. But I would love to put plants in here to help clarify it.
What about yellow water?? We've had a problem with this and a white "fungus." It's been the same problem with the same tank and with my last several types of fish. I have no idea what's causing it and how to remedy. Help!
Thankyou for this video.. suddenly i have green algae, blooming water.. water sample to pet store advise me to buy this chemical and that.. SO! i suggested if i buy floating plants to assist with the algae uptake this should work.. right? they said no.. so i came home did not buy any chemicals and watched as my water has become greener.. in over 40 years of fish i have never, ever had this problem.. here i am today watching youtube videos and whalla.. you have suggested exactly what it was i wanted to do.. advised against by my local pet barn store.. interesting.. i will go tomorrow and buy plants.. i was also advised by them to buy plants from a nursery not the store as i should be using fully aquatic plants.. is this true?
is a green water supposed to be not cloudy? my aquarium water is green but not cloudy, it is a plain undecorated tank and i have my bottom, 1 side and back of the tank painted black, i cannot put plant because my goldfish will destroy it, the aquarium light is not too bright as well and i only turn it on at night just for admiring the fish, at the morning till dawn i got sunlight from the window about 8 meters to my tank so i don't think light is my problem, any solution or advices? the green water kind of destroy the look from the other side that isn't painted
There are 3 types of people: those who wants to get rid of green water, people who are raising daphnia, and people who want green water in one tank but have it in another.
I’m glad I seen this video because my water went from really clear to LG green I was going to actually do a water change but figured I probably wouldn’t of worked anyway..,,, tried water clarifier try salt to kill ammonia nothing work Yeah actually I left my light on night and day and I probably could’ve did it the tank is actually near windows but it’s actually the windows are covered up
I do a weekly water change and don’t have the light barely on. Some morning light does come from windows for about an hour, until the sun moves out of position, and I still get an algae bloom. I feed them once a day, and make sure they finish all the food, and any left over food, (if it’s an Extreme amount), I take it out. I don’t understand why I still get an algae bloom.
Holy shit dude you just made me realize why 3 of my tanks are perfect and the other 2 are getting green my 3 that are good have water spangle /duckweed and the others don't other then that they are all the same (no extra light in the room)
Thnx bud, trying to have my tank like a mini pond, just an air pump and life cycle, its difficult. The goldfish kept picking at bottom growing plants and uprooting them so I stopped using. It is very difficult to get hold of cold water plecs or algea eaters, so I was at a loss as now have a lot of algea (snails don't do enough). Floating plants might well be the answer, thanks.
Where have you been when I started with my tank!?😆 “Do it based on what it looks like” that’s exactly my method cause all that other stuff is so overwhelming. This was my situation to the T I honestly accepted the fact I was just going to have green water but this was a big help. Now for the big question where to get plants during quarantine?😂
I’ve kept sword tails under cover outside in a ceramic pot for about 7 years now. Only in the last couple of months the water has gone green. I have elodea floating and it thrives but I should get some guppy grass. Thank you for a great video.
Another great video...in the case where some salt has been added to the water, does the salt need to be dialled back before adding the floating plants ?
So helpful! Thank you! I am going to buy a bunch of floating plants today :D would LED lights produce more algae than regular light? My LED lights are so so bright…it makes the aquarium pretty only for a short time loll.
Well what also helps, get a UV-C lamp, they are around 20 euro, till 80 euro depends on the size of your pond/aquarium had problems with algae even when all values where good, within in 2 days my aquarium was free of algae because the UV light prevents algae to multiply, and other nice effect it kill virus/bacteria that can harm your fish
mine’s got burned lul, just dont keep it on for too long, 6-8 hours max for me, but if i dont look at my aquarium i just leave them off, cause there’s a dim of light from my windows
I have a 10 gallon tank with 3 fake plants, 9 live plants, 3 amazon swards, 1 big java fern 3-6 small java ferns but they are in 2 sets of 3 each and 1 plant I cant remember what it is. I plan on getting a few more plants. And it has a hob filter but I am changing it to a double sponge Filter. I am thinking a floating plant, some small micro swards. Now my tank water is a very light green it's not bad at all.
This was the best advice that I received in my life. My tank changed from green to clear in 10 days.
this is so helpful I have cleaned my tank so many times and I got so frustrated because there wasn’t even barely any poop most of the time 😭 it’s definitely the light and I need more plants 😭
did it work?
My aquarium now is going green..glad to find this video
Mine too and sadly I have no choice to keep my aquarium by the window
This makes sooo much sense! Thank you so much. I had such a good ecosystem going but all of a sudden my fish ate the plants faster than they can grow. Once my plants were nearly gone my green water problem began. I also have some spots on the glass but I’m glad to have a solution to start with now.

My quarium looks like zombie pee. I subscribed to your channel now.
Lol same it happens I've got rid of it before but it's hard to not gonna lie
Omg mine too 😫😫😫
I literally just did over a 50% water change and my water is still green. I am over it. Im so scared I am going to kill my fish. I looks like I never touched it. 😞
Im curious of where u saw a zombie taking a piss 😂
lol. Great description
Brilliant. Algae bloom happened, like two days after i took most of my floating plants out.. What you said makes a lot of sense. Thanks
Same to me
same here
me 2
Thank you for breaking it down to the newbie level!! All the things you mentioned that you tried and failed are all the things I was just about to try (including chemicals). Getting some plants today!! *fingers crossed*
I used Algie fix and it killed my fish. Before that I did several water changes no good.
Wow! I'm loving the charts and short animations!
My guppies love greenwater in my outdoor tanks.
SOMEBODY NOTICED!!
It's hard to not get algae on outdoor tanks
Just got into the Fish Keeping Hobbie. Loved your channel so much thank you so much LEGEND !!

That sounds like it would be beautiful
Best not having green water indoors , works well for out door ponds

True Aussie common sense DIY and use things from nature not a bottle.
Well done mate, great vid : )
I have a big problem with green water and i'm working to deal with it... now i will try your method 👍

Excess light is often a trigger for Green Water algae blooms. One way to get rid of an outbreak is to temporarily eliminate light altogether. Turn the aquarium light off and wrap the tank with black plastic, trash can liners or blankets, and keep it covered for a few days.
After it’s been covered for a few days do you do a water change? How do you get rid of the dead algae? Is the filter enough to get rid of them all?
The Editing in this video is a great illustration of my ADHD mind. Thanks for the tips. I'm currently waging war on an Algae bloom :)
Thank you so much. This has been super helpful. Can't wait to try the floating plants to combat our green algae water👍
Well that explains why I had an algae bloom.. Putting the plants back, thank you!!!

So I just add the plants or do I first need to do a water change?
Excellent advice. Thank you!!!
Are Crested java fern a good algae plant too? I just got some snails 😅 having an algae bloom
wow ty so much I am going to use some cardboard to cover the tank because it is an outdoor fountain., I am going to buy the plants today.

Sweet thank you so much! I’ve learned so so much! Thanks for sharing the experience and wisdom young man!
If I don't have alot of time cuz I work and stuff is it OK to leave like this for a while till the weekend or something algae is good for the fish right its not gonna hurt them?
No it’s not
Kind of off topic, but how do you water change tanks in the ground floor? Doesn't gravity stop a python from pulling water out?
Thank you!! just learned my green water was Algae and I found ou video. Should I do a water change before adding the plants?
Just want to let you know your method worked perfectly for me. I loaded my green water aquarium with pothos. It took about 7 days but it is perfectly clear now! Thank you so much!😁
Very interesting. What do you mean by loading the aquarium with pothos? Did you plant it in the substrate or float clippings on top?
Great advise I will try it now.
Very good tips, thanks . Will try it this week.
This is great, thankyou :) I have a few different filter pads in mine and always change them out bi-monthly so there is still good bacteria. Great video. Appreciate the time you took to make it. I'm going to try this.
Great vid and good for keeping me from boredom
Thanks heaps!
Hi mate, great video, would you mind giving me the names of the floating plants you mentioned. I tried listening a couple of times and still can't make out the names.

Water sprite, water wisteria, guppy grass.

I’ve had an aquarium for years… like 10 years. First time ever this has happened. I guess it’s from light, idk my sh*t went from clear to green as can be
Water wisteria is my favourite plant I just leave it floating and it helped me with water quality so much
Will API Aquarium Salt kill the green Algae bloom Im having in my 55 gallon tank?
hello sir
i have a vertical standing tank with dimension of( L=25" w=14" H=48" all side mention in inch) it is 290litre tank
i would like to hear which filter should i use for my tank it is very difficult to clean it here and there
so do suggest a filter for vertical aquarium tank

I’m subbing because this was a brilliant video
Can we get scuds here in Australia?
Water sprite and less light didnt work for me. But a submersible UV aquarium light did. A small one inserted into the filter not exposing fish to the light worked after a few days and now it’s never been clearer. Now I use it regularly a few hours at a time.

Bro..i have a querry if you do 80% water change in bare tank or Planted tank does it remove the good beneficail bacteria thats in the tank...??
I’m trying to carpet my glossostigma so I have high light on a timer for 7hrs a day, and I just had an green algae bloom. What should I do? I don’t want to turn down my light because it would cause my glosso not to carpet.

It should, that's what I'm trying
Subscribed to your channel tonight 👍

Great advice.....only had this happen to me on one occasion decades ago.........very frustrating !!
Great video.....great channel.
Thanks heaps Tim!!
will the algea still bloom if i use a red or blue light ?
Excellent 👍👍
Great info.
Can i use blue light ?? Does blue light grow algae??
Would have been perfect for growing small fry up like ur danios . And just to scoop a cup or too into your Endlers makes fry grow realy quick
Yes
I’m glad I seen this video because my water went from really clear to LG green I was going to actually do a water change but figured I probably wouldn’t of worked anyway..,,, tried water clarifier try salt to kill ammonia nothing work
Yeah actually I left my light on night and day and I probably could’ve did it the tank is actually near windows but it’s actually the windows are covered up

How about if i but a Pleco?
One fish alone will not keep algae at a minimum, a group of algae eaters is better than a single algae eater at doing the job
You should also try daphnia or moina. They love eating green water and are free food for fish
nice video very helpful
Another great video...in the case where some salt has been added to the water, does the salt need to be dialled back before adding the floating plants ?
Depends how much? I'd say no unless its a brackish tank
KeepingFishSimple Using 40 grams in a 65 litre tank.
i use frog bit with a clean filter and a sponge filter helps normally it cleans up nicely
English is the second language here. Hope you that you could make it short and easy to understand please!
Great video
Where can I find those plants 🌱 and what where the names!?🎯✊🏿💯
Ebay - water wisteria, guppy grass, water sprite
So helpful! Thank you! I am going to buy a bunch of floating plants today :D would LED lights produce more algae than regular light? My LED lights are so so bright…it makes the aquarium pretty only for a short time loll.
great video! BTW do you have a video on diy co2 for extra large aquariums? BTW 5th!

I really like clever, innovative tips like this that people have good success with. Thank you!!!
Just bought some water sprite yesterday fingers crossed it works 😁
Very interesting video to watch 😊
Thanks Jonard
Well what also helps, get a UV-C lamp, they are around 20 euro, till 80 euro depends on the size of your pond/aquarium had problems with algae even when all values where good, within in 2 days my aquarium was free of algae because the UV light prevents algae to multiply, and other nice effect it kill virus/bacteria that can harm your fish
What uvc lamp did you use?
I have LED lights, will the floating plants be okay?
mine’s got burned lul, just dont keep it on for too long, 6-8 hours max for me, but if i dont look at my aquarium i just leave them off, cause there’s a dim of light from my windows
My aquarium looks like Shrek took a piss in it. Thanks for the info.
