From what Vegeta says here ,the the ssj form was too powerful for the first person who achieved it, and could not be contained in the normal form. I specualted that if he tried to do it without first transforming into an Uzaroo it would destroy the body in like a supernova type explosion. But the fact that Goku and the other saiyan z figters was able to do it in normal form proved thier body's were perfectly conditioned before achieving ssj and had complete mastery and control of the Ssj forms, where as the one in the stroy had talent but not control. This is where Nakatsuru got the idea for SSj4, notice it shows a golden ape and Vegeta mentions he couldn't control his power, well just like Goku would have probably just destroyed everything including himself if Pan didn't help him to become a SSj4 or like I said a true Super Saiyan, Nakatsuru the mind behind SSj4 was the lead character designer for this episode along with GT, he worked closely with Toriyama from Dragon Ball all the way through to GT, this is why I don't think the gold haired super saiyans are really super saiyans at all, Vegeta just thought Goku was and it all snowballed from there everyone just assumed that they are super saiyans, but really just powered up versions of a normal saiyan more like a mutation from energy, where as SSj4 is a transformation.

It's amazing coming back to this video after Broly was officially introduced into the series. Him and Kale embody Vegeta's description from then. It's nice seeing that line up so well!
RIP Akira. Dragon Ball as a whole has ALWAYS been wacky. Watching this small clip all these years later makes me again realise that Dragon Ball Z was the beginning of, "you know, we had a lot of fun with Dragon Ball and there were some serious plot beats in there. Let's go further!" and then became more serious. It is insane nowadays to look back at what we had at one time (mostly pre-internet) and the official "lore" of a Super Saiyan was essentially that they are ultra rare, borderline legendary and a very very very special thing to ever happen. To this day when Goku does finally transform even he doesn't seem fully aware of what happened and just is so focused on killing Frieza that nothing else matters. Today (mid 2024 as I type this), basically just throw a dart at a rainbow board and be like, "what colour hair Super Saiyan did you get?" That being said it still is fun and wacky and stupid because Dragon Ball at the end of the day is really always about just getting stronger and stronger with no actual limit. Though with Toriyama having died recently, maybe fans will canonically have their own answers of what the "strongest" form is... As much as I loved Dragon Ball and grew up with it, "Ultra Instinct" does seem like a fitting conclusion to the mortal's final form. A super intense ultra powerful, highly specific form that literally allows the fighter to separate the body and consciousness in order to do fight? That's great, just great. The ONLY thing that we didn't get to see in the anime is Goku actually being able to do this fully at will. We saw him use it and use it well, but his body broke eventually (no doubt showing the audience how hard it is to maintain), but man, it would've been crazy if he were able to transform into that at will. Also, personal preference, white hair transformation was a nice touch at the end, very god-like ethereal.
Well Vegeta said he could only maintain his super sayian status in the TRANSFORMED state. What people never think about is that no saiyan alive in the series ever saw a super saiyan in person, they just had legends, and these legends say that there was a transformed state for these legendary beings. Naturally Vegeta would take this as meaning the Ape form, since he has no idea saiyans are even capable of any other transformations at this point. Theoretically this legendary transformed state could refer to Broly's form, and not the ape.
That's because it is, that's why Vegeta was scared of broly. Because Vegeta is the only one that knows the lore and history of the legendary super Saiyan.
I wish the writers would've went into more depth about this story. Maybe like a three episode mini series of this raging out of control beast stomping around destroying anything in its way. DBZ had some of the scariest silhouettes monsters hence the legendary Super Saiyan, Trunk's story about the moment when the androids awoke and killed Dr. Gero and Goku's nightmare with Android 19 and Dr. Gero.
Here's my 2 cents worth remember in gt Goku had a tail and was already a ssj so when he transformed he became a Golden great ape just like the original ssj which means that the original ssj must have become a ssj4 but couldn't control his powers so he died which would explain why elder Kai know about ssj4
When Goku was the golden great ape he was out of control too. (Pan and seeing the Earth/ the picture calmed him down.) It appears to me as if the golden ape just destroyed the planet he was on and Saiyans can't survive in space not that it became a ssj4.
There is no way this saiyan is yamoshi. Yamoshi was the first super saiyan and super saiyan god yet this legend refers to the "last super saiyan" who could only control it in great ape form and ultimately was destroyed by his own power. Yamoshi died to saiyans not by his own power as this super saiyan did.
In my opinion the golden ape thing that vegeta was imagining was probably how he interpreted the super saiyan legend because remember both the great ape and super saiyan increase the power of a sayian. So vegeta must of thought well if the legend exists it might look like the great ape but with yellow fur because the legend just says yellow hair on a saiyan it didn't say anything about it being in great ape or a normal saiyan form.
My theory is that the origina ssj was a golden oozaru who didn't exactly achieve the form goku did in GT. SSJ4 is a half human half oozaru form and can only be achieved by true pure blooded saiyans.

For example it says he could only maintain the form in the transformed state, maybe later saiyans thought this meant the ape transformation, but it was originally the actual super saiyan transformed state with the golden hair.
One could argue that Bulma and Vegeta's theory is wrong especially since Gohan a Half-Saiyan could achieve SSj4 in DB Heroes. Maybe it had something to do with Baby being in control of Vegeta's power not Vegeta himself so perhaps the only way for a Saiyan (I mean any Saiyan pure, half, quarter, human that's saiyan descent) to become a SSJ4 is that they must control their own power as the Golden Oozaru themselves and not from outside help like Baby. Note: Outside help meaning someone like Baby, Babidi, and Towa controlling your body and mind

thats not the same legend Vegeta knows of. the one Freeza heard (from his ancestor Chilled) was about the Super Saiyan, and how Freeza should kill them all before one of them achieves it. the story Vegeta knows is of the original Super Saiyan...the FIRST SSJ4 (or almost SSJ4 actually).

Isn't Broly the Super Saiyan? He already was a SSJ as a Teen Broly (In Paragus Flashback). Vegeta stated that the power was so strong that it made him Primitive that it gave a rage. Yet Broly didn't kill himself because of Paragus's Control. That's why the small situation of Broly being mad against Goku seems to be a big deal to Broly, he's enraged, insane.

No he said transformed state. Vegeta would assume that this transformed state of legend would mean the ape form, since he has no idea that saiyans are capable of a different type of transformation. To all the dimensionally challenged people out there I write this. NO CARTOON SERIES STARTS OUT FINISHED. Ssj didn't exist yet here only in build up. By this point the creators were probably tossing around how goku would look like or an infinite amount of other possibilities. Lol I was talking to people who were trying to figure out who the original super saiyan was. They were trying to match him with a character and I'm saying is that no, it doesn't matter. You can say bardock is the original ssj but you wouldn't be either wrong or right since vegeta never *as far as I know* described what he looked like. Only problem I had with GT was that they turned Goku into a little kid again and then becomes an adult again when going ss4? Doesn't make sense, but everything from the storyline to the villains, the music and hell even the animation itself in GT is far superior than Super. I'm loving everyone's view of the super saiyan of legend it's a great topic here's another thing to consider remember when vegeta was talking about goku father bardock and he said he was not only a average fighter but a brilliant scientist he discovered how to create full artifical moonlight without the moon remember piccolo destroyed the moon after little goku change into a ape so the moon was around at the time bardock was sent back to the past so he could have easily went ssj and then turned ssj ape and destroyed the planet plant along with himself

Dragon Ball as a whole has ALWAYS been wacky. Watching this small clip all these years later makes me again realise that Dragon Ball Z was the beginning of, "you know, we had a lot of fun with Dragon Ball and there were some serious plot beats in there. Let's go further!" and then became more serious.
It is insane nowadays to look back at what we had at one time (mostly pre-internet) and the official "lore" of a Super Saiyan was essentially that they are ultra rare, borderline legendary and a very very very special thing to ever happen. To this day when Goku does finally transform even he doesn't seem fully aware of what happened and just is so focused on killing Frieza that nothing else matters.
Today (mid 2024 as I type this), basically just throw a dart at a rainbow board and be like, "what colour hair Super Saiyan did you get?" That being said it still is fun and wacky and stupid because Dragon Ball at the end of the day is really always about just getting stronger and stronger with no actual limit.
Though with Toriyama having died recently, maybe fans will canonically have their own answers of what the "strongest" form is... As much as I loved Dragon Ball and grew up with it, "Ultra Instinct" does seem like a fitting conclusion to the mortal's final form. A super intense ultra powerful, highly specific form that literally allows the fighter to separate the body and consciousness in order to do fight? That's great, just great. The ONLY thing that we didn't get to see in the anime is Goku actually being able to do this fully at will. We saw him use it and use it well, but his body broke eventually (no doubt showing the audience how hard it is to maintain), but man, it would've been crazy if he were able to transform into that at will. Also, personal preference, white hair transformation was a nice touch at the end, very god-like ethereal.

Well Vegeta said he could only maintain his super sayian status in the TRANSFORMED state. What people never think about is that no saiyan alive in the series ever saw a super saiyan in person, they just had legends, and these legends say that there was a transformed state for these legendary beings. Naturally Vegeta would take this as meaning the Ape form, since he has no idea saiyans are even capable of any other transformations at this point. Theoretically this legendary transformed state could refer to Broly's form, and not the ape.

I wish the writers would've went into more depth about this story. Maybe like a three episode mini series of this raging out of control beast stomping around destroying anything in its way. DBZ had some of the scariest silhouettes monsters hence the legendary Super Saiyan, Trunk's story about the moment when the androids awoke and killed Dr. Gero and Goku's nightmare with Android 19 and Dr. Gero.
Here's my 2 cents worth remember in gt Goku had a tail and was already a ssj so when he transformed he became a Golden great ape just like the original ssj which means that the original ssj must have become a ssj4 but couldn't control his powers so he died which would explain why elder Kai know about ssj4
When Goku was the golden great ape he was out of control too. (Pan and seeing the Earth/ the picture calmed him down.) It appears to me as if the golden ape just destroyed the planet he was on and Saiyans can't survive in space not that it became a ssj4.

There is no way this saiyan is yamoshi. Yamoshi was the first super saiyan and super saiyan god yet this legend refers to the "last super saiyan" who could only control it in great ape form and ultimately was destroyed by his own power. Yamoshi died to saiyans not by his own power as this super saiyan did.
You have to remember that it's a legend, not what actually happened
In my opinion the golden ape thing that vegeta was imagining was probably how he interpreted the super saiyan legend because remember both the great ape and super saiyan increase the power of a sayian. So vegeta must of thought well if the legend exists it might look like the great ape but with yellow fur because the legend just says yellow hair on a saiyan it didn't say anything about it being in great ape or a normal saiyan form.

My theory is that the origina ssj was a golden oozaru who didn't exactly achieve the form goku did in GT. SSJ4 is a half human half oozaru form and can only be achieved by true pure blooded saiyans.

For example it says he could only maintain the form in the transformed state, maybe later saiyans thought this meant the ape transformation, but it was originally the actual super saiyan transformed state with the golden hair.

One could argue that Bulma and Vegeta's theory is wrong especially since Gohan a Half-Saiyan could achieve SSj4 in DB Heroes. Maybe it had something to do with Baby being in control of Vegeta's power not Vegeta himself so perhaps the only way for a Saiyan (I mean any Saiyan pure, half, quarter, human that's saiyan descent) to become a SSJ4 is that they must control their own power as the Golden Oozaru themselves and not from outside help like Baby.
Note: Outside help meaning someone like Baby, Babidi, and Towa controlling your body and mind

Isn't Broly the Super Saiyan? He already was a SSJ as a Teen Broly (In Paragus Flashback). Vegeta stated that the power was so strong that it made him Primitive that it gave a rage. Yet Broly didn't kill himself because of Paragus's Control. That's why the small situation of Broly being mad against Goku seems to be a big deal to Broly, he's enraged, insane.
I, originally, heard about the story but the original Super Saiyan from the Ocean Dub of DBZ but I love how Chris Sabat tells it since i had got used to the FUNimation dub. Also, the silhouette of the original SSJ was the concept for the Golden Great Ape in DBGT!!! COOL BEANS😎😎😎!!!

To all the dimensionally challenged people out there I write this. NO CARTOON SERIES STARTS OUT FINISHED. Ssj didn't exist yet here only in build up. By this point the creators were probably tossing around how goku would look like or an infinite amount of other possibilities. Who fucking knows if they even knew what they were going to do with the super saiyan legend. All this "who is the original ssj," is bullshit talk because by definition, the super saiyan is a legend that not many details are known about even by vegeta. The original super saiyan was never meant to be built upon. They showed a possible representation of what super saiyan could be, but they kept it obscure for the fact that the legend is what was important. Need to bring that up somehow. This original super saiyan is obsolete, only for bringing up super saiyans.

Like you said, they might have already known what goku ssj might have looked like so this golden oozaru might not even have been anything but a representation.
