From Married With Children, Season 5 Episode 12, 'Married... with Who'. After binge-drinking at a bankers party, Marcy discovers herself to be married to a mysterious hunk named Jefferson D'Arcy, whom Al unearths as a gigolo and con artist. To make Marcy feel better about this unexpected change in her life, Peggy decides to throw a formal wedding ceremony for Marcy and Jefferson in the Bundy's back yard, a ceremony in which nothing goes as planned.

The character transition from Steve to Jefferson was smooth. Both of these two characters are hilarious in their own way.

It's a classic example of maximizing the limits of a given actor. In this case, David Garrison is a much better actor than Ted McGinley but they made the teleplay perfectly match what Ted was capable of, blended to the rest of the cast, and didn't try to overstretch it.
Steve was the annoying neighbor while Jeffreson was more of a friend of Al.
Should have showed the part where Jefferson informed Marcy his last name was Darcy. Her reaction was hilarious.
"Marcy D'Arcy??? I now have the name of a cartoon character!"

Kelly was actually smarter when the show started. As the seasons went on, they made her more dumb. Which is a shame because I preferred the smarter, smart-alec Kelly.

The best part of this episode is the end with the spoof on the Andy Griffith show. I couldn't stop laughing the first time I saw Bud's hair fall off.

Yeah Marcy described him as a “worthless cabana boy” and Al even told peg when she had amnesia that Jefferson was the freeloading gigolo who lives next door.
What I find astounding: His gestures, facial expressions and all that were spot on from the beginning! He didn't have to evolve the character or to find into it, he didn't even seem to be nervous (wouldn't even have been a problem because his character could be nervous here) - he just WAS Jefferson from the first episode he was in!
The show was lowbrow in many ways but the writing AND the actors were top notch, all of them!
In one episode turned out he was a retired C.I.A. assassin.

I remember watching a documentary about this show, and apparently Ed O'neil and Amanda Bearse weren't getting along well. Which is such a shame because they had marvelous chemistry.
I was at 2 tapings towards then end of their run and I could see the tension between the two. When their scene was over, Amanda would rush off stage and didn't look happy at all.

I like Jefferson. His confident attitude makes him funny regardless of how bad things get he can just laugh it off no matter what. The fact Marcy married him when she was drunk reveals her TRUE nature.

And this is when the show got better and funnier. Steve was gone and enter Jefferson. To me when Jefferson joined the cast it got better and funnier and we saw a different side to Al we never seen before when steve was there. A fun and happy side to him. Lol
Nah, Al was happy before... in fact, he interacted more with Peggy in Steve's era: jokes, jabs at Marcy, actual sarcastic conversations... he was more of a dad to his children and he was happy to be in his own way... in the end Steve, among other things, became so much like Al he dropped Marcy.
I like them both, too different to compare. The changes were not only on character replacement, it was on the whole structure of the series: Marcy's personality changed, her marriage hierarchy changed, Al changed because Jefferson is more like him plus the children were growing up... Kelly's character changed dramatically, for example.
I like Steves humor and facial expressions, quite as much. The comeback (when he stole the egg, or in the pirate episode) showed how much he extended the spectrum.
Jefferson did a good job with the joke lines going to the No ma'am direction and more running gags, while giving Marcy a lot of opportunities to play the feminist card while still being needy.
Both were great imo
(Although I prefer Jefferson)
Jefferson was much better in my book. His hidden past with the alphabet company, his gigolo attitude, and whenever he and Al did some sort of construction, they hurt each other hilariously.
They really did well together.
