This show is legendary
I just watched this episode. I’m going through the entire series on Hulu and this one just floored me. Best episode of the franchise so far. I just knew it would be the highest rated ep of the season out of the 10 I already watched and yep it is. Linda Day was by far the best director of this show. Her eps are head and shoulders above the rest!
LOL, I remember when I was like 7, they sent me down to the Sub Shop to pickup the Pizza, that's exactly how I carried it back, like my school books. Needless to say, the family wasn't happy when I walked in the door. 50 years later, my surviving family still makes fun of me for it.
One of the few classic scenes in the later seasons was when Al had to get into bed with Marcy and pretend to be Jefferson.
"Jefferson, rub my back!" (al rubs off screen)
"That's my front." (Al, horrified)
I'm definitely going to score the complete series just to put on the shelf and say I have it
Make sure you get the 2015 release…. The older one has the theme song, stripped out and replaced with an instrumental version.

This must have been an interesting shoot given the fact Ed O’Neill and Amanda Bearse hated each others guts lol
They loathed each other...but I'm sure those fat paychecks (and continuing residuals) cushioned the blow.
Apparently they did get along well during the first seasons, the rift started later.
As I understand it, at some point Amanda Bearse began a little over-identifying with her character Marcy. And then a man has to do what a man has to do. I do not blame Ed O'Neill. ;-)

Its interesting to compare the way Marcy was portrayed in the earlier episodes compared to the 'chicken' Marcy of the subsequent seasons. Also Al was far less confrontational with Marcy.
