What was the real Wild West like?

  • What is the Wild West? Surely these words immediately bring to mind dashing cowboys, bloodthirsty Indians, and a gang of desperate thugs. Their whole life is endless skirmishes with each other, in between which they drink in lousy salons. Few sheriffs can ensure justice in the vast wastelands of the Wild West, so Mr. Colt serves as the only protection.
At least, this image for us, ordinary people, is replicated by mass culture in the form of Hollywood westerns. But how far is all this from reality? What was the Wild West really like? Let's try to figure it out.
The history of the Wild West began on April 30, 1803, when the government of the Young United States decided to purchase French Louisiana, a vast territory in the American West. The Americans bought more than two million square kilometers of land for the ridiculously small amount of $15 million. Most of the purchased territory was a completely wild area, which belonged to France only by right of the discoverer. Immediately after the purchase of the third, United States President Thomas Jefferson decided to organize an expedition to the West, the task of which was to find a river route across America that would connect two oceans - the Pacific and the Atlantic.

During its journey, the expedition brought many Indian tribes under the sovereignty of the United States.

Already 15 years after the Louisiana Purchase, the Americans received from the British vast territories on the west coast, south of modern Canada

The first settlers walked west along the so-called trails, following one after another and founding cities exactly along the line of this route.

Such, for example, were the Mormons, who founded many of their isolated settlements in the West.

These were mainly peasants and artisans, but among them, there were also religious minorities fleeing persecution.

Thus, a convenient and proven road was created for the next settlers, as well as many settlements ready to provide food and a roof over the traveler’s head.

I thought this was going to be like what life was like in the wild West for the average person, not general well-known history information.
