  • Congratulations to the Zenith STOL "Sky Jeep" pilots for their excellent flying at the 2019 New Zealand Bush Pilot Championships! What's amazing is that these are stock Zenith STOL "Sky Jeep" light-sport utility kit airplanes being flown by recreational sport pilots.
1st place STOL Competition (1325 lbs): Chris Anderson (Zenith STOL)
2nd place STOL Competition (1325 lbs): Hamish Crowe (Zenith STOL)
Shortest Takeoff: Deane Phillip (Zenith STOL)
Shortest Landing: Chris Anderson (Zenith STOL)
Healthy Bastards Bush Pilot Champs 2019. February 2, 2019. Omaka Aerodrome in Blenheim, New Zealand. Many thanks to Nick Hobart for the video footage!

My God!! If you fly, you can't help but have an appreciation for those who fly these aircraft. They are the go anywhere anytime, do anything, Aircraft there is. And those who fly them for these reasons, are truly the best of what it means to be call Bush pilots. And I say hats off to you all. For those who take these aircraft into the backcountry of places that would and do put a scare in the everyday sort of pilot. And I mean ( NO ) disrespect to any who fly. But for those men and women who take those into those places were nothing else can get there. As well as take support and supply, Medicines I say God as well as his Angel's are ready and on standby to fly with these men and woman. The best to you all, God Bless .

Years ago I watched a old movie from the late 1930's or early 40's and the pilot, flying into the wind, landed the plane with no forward motion. It was the craziest thing. Pilot flew up to the spot, lingered for a few seconds and plopped it right down. No animation or models. That would have been way too obvious.

This STOL competition is well run, being the pilots are landing and taking of in very low, to no wind assist. The one's I've seen in Alaska are silly because there landing and taking off "Into" 40 mile per hour head winds. Any record needs to be in wind speeds under 3-miles per hour, as is done with sprinters in track and field.

Those planes look hard to fly and probably hard to keep on the ground while parked. They create so much lift it looks like they get tossed around by the slightest breeze. It probably feels like flying while bouncing on a trampoline.
Then while you're parked if a ten mph gust of wind comes by your plane is trying to fly away. I bet you could use one of those things as a kite on a windy day.😁
