I installed Ableton 12 last night very impressed. Finally the arrangement view looks miles better and actually the better view. And seems a lot faster than 11 loading times
@@dBsInstitute I have just found one bug in it and that is my Code 49 keyboard won't play a b0 note or a B Flat note. The pads play the note. But it is Ableton 12 midi conflict because the code plays the notes when Ableton 12 isn't on
This update was jsut incredible. Anyone who says different is not using ableton properly. Just stoked Thank you for great explination. I had some trouble understanding some of the features but you sorted me out proper. thanks
Given that for me live will be about $200 for the upgrade, it feels solidly worth it. Meld is surprisingly one of my favorite new synths to use, Roar is an excellent distortion unit, Granulator 3 is solid, and there’s a handful of new sounds I like. I know the file browser is an issue for some folks, but it isn’t a problem for me personally. I just don’t have that many sounds/presets/plug-ins I use. I tend to build things relatively from scratch so I rarely need a very powerful searching tool. The main things I am disappointed to not see are proper time coding and video file handling for scoring work, and a better solution for pitch correcting.
That new CC device he snuck in right at the end had me more excited than it should be. I could see that being really helpful with some of my weirder hardware synths and devices!
An excellent presenter, a cut above most others. Complex content effortlessly taught, at just the right pace - for my brain anyway. And nice handling of questions, with great underlying knowledge.
Just a quick note, I spent ages trying to figure out why the splitting feature mentioned @3:24 wasn't working for me. In case anyone else gets stuck here I thought I'd share what I found out. Firstly in Windows it's ctrl-e not alt-e also for some reason you have to hit and hold the 'e' before you hit the ctrl, to activate the split feature, control acts as a toggle to go between normal mode and dragging mode.
Glad you liked this video! I think that's a good question without a simple answer. With more tools that open up new possibilities and workflows, there's always the risk of overdoing it. Getting back to basics and making sure you know how to produce great tunes using only a few tools, as well as all the new tools available to you, is a good way to ensure you're not making changes for the sake of it,
I cant find that awesome Alt-E command you discuss at 3:27 to split the midinotes. Is it Alt-E (on mac), what is the shortcut on windows? Great tutorial!!
@@dBsInstitute Thanks! After some fiddling it seems that you first have to press and hold E before holding CTRL. This should be documented somewhere as it's not very intuitive but highly productive :).
With all of the controls for note generation, timing, splitting etc. it seems like a big miss to not include modulo or X:Y trig condition (note plays every x times in y loops a la Elektron or Fors Opal). It was the one thing I was hoping for the in 12's Beta phase.
The Generators and Transformers that come with Live 12 are really just starting points. They're open to Max For Live, so anyone can build whatever they want to work in there. Pretty sure we'll see some wild stuff here soon.
Push 3 will continue to run on Live 11 first, the switch will be made but not on the day of the release. Once that switch has been made, you should be able to adjust all the MIDI editing functions on Push 3. We'll have to wait for the switch to know that for sure though!
I have 12 Beta and my Midi clip editor doesnt look like this. It has 6 tabs at the top left, the far right one has a dropdown menu with things like Pitch, Seed, Shape etc. How do I see what you're seeing? Or is this a limitation of Beta?
Right-click on the top bar in the Clip section (right next to the Clip Activator and Clip name) and make sure "Arrange Clip View Panels Automatically" is checked 😉
Hey! There isn't an official release date yet, but Ableton have said to us that it will be coming soon. It's currently in beta phase but available for pre-order! There's a link in the description of the video.
Freeze & Flatten is Ableton's equivalent of Bounce In Place. its not quite as nice as a fully-featured Bounce In Place, but it gets you half the way there and its been improved a little in Live 12.
Probably could have been informative, but I couldn' hear the results of your work, the speaking audio was too loud, and the Ableton volume way too low.. Cheers for the effort...
It really needs some AI tools for rhythm and chord progression, harmonization, etc. Just a random generator is quite weak!!! Apart from that it is the go to DAW because it is so responsive and reliable. I did order the Standard Version immediately.
Random generators can be super powerful, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time until more AI tools are integrated into DAWs. We recently did a tutorial on the AI players in Logic and often do tutorials on AI tools for music production. Take a look around the channel and make sure to subscribe!
i'm getting old cuz all these new generative doodads seem for people who aggressively don't wan't to come up with musical ideas or rhythms from their own heart lol. like i love experimental tools and happy accidents and chance and all that but if you don't personally want to arrange your drums and kiss each one on the forehead i don't even know why you're opening the program
I guess there's a place for both, isn't there! These tools can be great for getting you out of a creative block and inspiring ideas but maybe not so great for arranging a tune from start to finish!
@@RemmyMusic1sure, but that still sounds like a useful tool to me. painters use various techniques to flick paint onto canvas all the time. you can't possibly control where all the paint drops will land so it's essentially random as well
Random/Generative material is intended to create happy accidents and idea generation. I render out a 16 bar and then might find a few 1/4 beat rhythmic gems out of that that I will clip out, double, make variations. Great for days when you're not feeling super creative.

great overview thank you so much!

Great video! BTW, @ 41:47 is the same beat from 2pacs, “hitem up”.
Ableton added freeze and flatten aka bounce in place, but no keyboard shortcut for it. Genius
FINALLY MICRO TUNNINGS ! that were really frustrating working only with "blocked" notes

Is there finally an internal MIDI channel routing? If not, what's the point of the upgrade?
very powerful sequencer overall.

Video being desynced from audio was sort of annoying, if that's possible to fix.
Sorry to hear that! We will look into this :)
Will the parameters of the generator/ transformer also be adjustable in the push (2/3)?
Ableton 12 is designed for the Push 3
no
Not right away, no. But I believe they will come to Push eventually.

time warp out of Bitwig but not as intuitive good to see they are taking some inspiration

Not even 10min in - it blows my mind what Ableton can do - with a couple of clicks.
It's pretty amazing, isn't it! Glad you found this video useful!
Ableton 12 getting rid of folders is very disappointing! They should keep the tagging with the folders cause all my folders were already organized !
I'm assuming you mean the Audio Effects folders? You can achieve pretty much the same thing using Filter, just a lot more flexibly.
