| MARGINALIZED NUBIANS | An estimated 3,500 Nubians living in Kisii demand for citizenship

Members of the Nubian Community in Kisii numbering 3,500 are demanding that the kenyan government gives them kenyan citizenship so that they can participate in the forthcoming general election. Speaking to Citizen TV, the elderly members of the community revealed challenges they face that include lack of birth certificates, identity cards and employment opportunities despite acquiring education. Nimrod Taabu reports on the unfortunate situation the nubian community finds itself in despite their fore fathers arriving in the country as early as 1938.

I really don’t understand why it’s so hard to recognize the Nubians in Kenya as Kenyans by birth and residency. There is zero chance they will ever move back to Sudan, a place that is foreign to them. Kenya is not alone in this inhumane practice, but it’s a callous practice.

That's why the independence govt marginalized them and that culture has continued till now. What is not false is that the Nubians were a machinery as any other community that seeks to safeguard it's territory and interest had armies/warriors. It's an unfortunate part of history but it was inevitable, I hope you have info about the scramble and partition of Africa. If it wasn't the British it would have been some other colonial administration. Now I am not justifying colonialism but that is the truth.
That being said it is not for a government to marginalise communities due to their relationship with the British the government in itself benefited from the spoils of the British civilization in these countries and since independence have been doing Neo colonialism which is way worse.

I lived with Nubians in Kibera and these are really nice people who just eke out a living doing small businesses. I think its time they are recognized. Some of these talking here are the third, fourth or even fifth generation. Where do we expect them to go?
