I grew up with the Jackson Five and believe me when they played One Bad Apple by the Osmonds at some of those teenage parties they went nuts. Everyone was dancing like they were in a contest LOL. I wish we could have gotten more from the Osmonds because they could have been great!

Merrill was really the one with the soulful voice. All of them were very talented though.

One Bad Apple was actually written for the J5. There was a song written for the Osmonds for a movie, but they were on tour so it was given to the J5. There were others. There was no rivalry between the families. They were actually friends. The Osmonds were professional for seven years learning the business from the ground up on the Andy Williams show. They each learned to play many instruments, how to dance under the instruction of the best in the business, so by the time they left the AW show they had it all--stage presence, vocals, dancing, instruments, and just how to put on a good show. And they really worked those shows, came off sweating. Also, they wrote most of their own music and could really rock when they wanted to. It wasn't all bubble gum. Unfortunately, they got sidetracked with the D&M show. Donny now says they shouldn't have have done the D&M show; it kept the older brothers from writing more great rock songs like Crazy Horses, Hold Her Tight, Having a Party, Lazy River. So sad.

This an Osmond clip, The Osmonds are a good musicial family and they have brought alot of joy and fun to many of us. To compare the Jacksons here is just disrespectful to this band. I think both bands are exceptional, both had many many hits and at one time Donny and Michael ruled the teen scene. Period.

Barry Gordy passed on the song. It was an answer song to " I want you back" written by George Jackson (no relation). Instead the Jackson Five recorded a bigger hit "ABC"

It's funny to watch a video with Merrill "playing" bass, but with Bob Wray's very funky original bass lines from the record coming out of the speakers. No way he could have played that.

This clip was obviously lip-synced, but Merrill does play bass and all of the Osmonds are accomplished musicians. Check out a live clip I posted recently. th-cam.com/video/dvLO4laNpBA/w-d-xo.html They were only 14 to 22 years old at the time.

You make a good point about the similarity between One Bad Apple and I Want You Back...similar chord changes, arrangements, even a variation of the original theme (I Want You Back - guy wants girl he mistreated, One Bad Apple - new guy wants trust from mistreated girl). Still, professionally done music by show-business lifers who, surprisingly, did not record many more songs in this style.

The Osmonds and the Jacksons almost mirror one another.
Both have 5 in the group,
Both added another brother later on to the group.
Both exploded when the younger one took over being Donny and Michael.
Both had sisters that were huge success's in their own right, being Marie and mostly Janet.
Both came out of the same generation.
Both sold out hugely world wide in sales.
In my opinion the Osmonds were more talented vocally and instrumentally than the Jacksons as a whole.
    But .....................they didn't have Michael.

darrel james And they both had Saturday morning cartoon shows!
Perhaps not so surprisingly, Donny and Michael were actually close friends.
I've heard Donny tell a story about a time when Michael called him when he was particularly troubled.

One Bad Apple was written with the Jackson 5 in mind, so that would explain why it sounds similar. The question is why did the Jackson's manager pass on the song? The Osmonds took it and made it a #1 hit.

Near the end of their run on the Andy Williams show, the Osmonds were already performing pop music, so it wasn't hard for them to make that turnaround. They did not have to be retooled as you put it.

@iammajorpowers please, they were a barbershop quartet type of vocal group before the J5 came along (cf the Andy Williams Christmas shows), and were hastily retooled in the wake of the Jacksons' breakout. "One Bad Apple" is a virtual carbon copy of "I Want You Back".

the osmonds couldn't have been a copy of the jackson 5 since they were a band before the jacksons..they were just boy bands with identical styles..longevity wise, mike was better than donny i agree..proof is in his hits..but donny had a better childhood and actually turned out pretty normal..poor michael..no fault of his own really..donny got trapped into a boy who couldn't transform in the 70s and 80s..hollywood was done with him ..great video.
