Sliced Dropshots: Send your opponent into the wrong direction

  • Beside hitting the "normal" shots, slicing the shuttle can be a very powerful weapon for badminton players and especially on a higher level it is used in many different situations.
    In this video I will focus on the technique for the most common way to use slice: Dropshots. Beside the normal slice I will also go in detail on the so called reverse slice and break down the important keypoints of the racket and arm movement.
    --Overview-----------------------------------------------------------------------
    Here a short overview about the different sections and topics in the video:
    0:00 Introduction
    0:15 How to Slice
    1:38 The Slice
    4:28 The Reverse Slice
    8:27 Outro
    -- Linked videos -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    In the video I also mention other tutorials, that will help you to be more dangerous with your dropshots and help you to get a better understanding about rear court shots. Here you can find them:

    Grip Tutorial: • Badminton Grip Tutoria...
    -- Summary ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    As mentioned there are two ways of slicing. One option is the "normal" slice, where you hit the shuttle on the right side from a players perspective, the other option is the reverse slice, where you hit the shuttle on the left side (for lefties it is the other way around). By slicing the shuttle you will give your shots a different direction and the shuttle will also loose a lot of speed, even if you hit it with a lot of power.
    Here are the important keypoints for both variations (for right handers):
    Slice:
    - Similar movement to straight clear and smash
    - no or less forearmrotation during the hitting phase
    - slice shuttle on the right side and hit the feathers
    - wristmovement can help to increase slice
    Reverse Slice:
    - Similar movement to straight clear and smash
    - racket and armmovement goes more from right to left during hitting phase
    - use forearmrotation and make kind of a window wiper movement with your racket
    - hit the shuttle on the left side
    - you can use your wrist or adjust the grip a little to get easier to the left side of the shuttle
    There are two options to adjust your shots:
    1) speed of the arm movement
    2) amount of slice
    The more you slice it, the more tempo you need in your movement, otherwise your shots will not get over the net. That will also improve the deception in your shots, but it will also be more difficult to hit it with consistency. Try to start with a little less slice and less speed in the movement and try to increase both over time.
    Hint: You cannot really see, how much slice you get into your shots but YOU CAN HEAR IT! The sound is completly different compared to a clean hit. Try to get a feeling for that as well, to be able to judge sliced shots.

    Aloha Coach Tobias, awesome shots to add to my shot arsenal. This shot once mastered will make any drop shot more deadly the slice and reverse drop shots become incredibly effective when setting up opponents expecting a conventional drop shot. The spin and steeper angle will surprise opponents. Deception and tempo will also drive opponents crazy. Thank you for this well thought out video. You are an awesome coach.

    Hi Tobias! Nice video as always! :) Question: Why it is much difficult to execute the reverse slice in the forehand side? Thanks!

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the forehand the movement for the straight reverse slice goes more sideways than the movement from the cross drop on the round the head corner. You also hit it more beside the body what makes it harder to control the slice.

    Why there’s no explanation about the role of the wrist in these shots? I‘m quite curious because In Indonesia we are being taught we use our wrist in almost every shots in slice shots we can try to control the depth of our slice with our wrist...the more we spin our wrist make the more closer to the net our slice shots. It‘s really interesting slight difference technique I found so far.

    Hi Tobias and thanks for your videos, always useful and accurate. I've been learned to slightly change the grip for the forehand slice. Basicaly, I rotate the racket before the shot to make the slice easy. What do you think about that ? Is that only for beginners ?

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can do it to make it easier in the beginning. From a certain level you will see that players can read small details like that so the deception of the slice is not really working so good anymore so that is important to keep in mind

    When doing a forehand cross slice or late rearcourt straight slice (recovery shot), some people change the forehand grip to a more neutral (i mean with the thumb at the same level as the index) and use the wrist action to generate more spin, do you recommend it ?
    Personally, the pronation movement does not seem natural and I feel that I have to snap my wrist a little bit when using the standard forehand grip, that's why I revert to the method above

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes that helps to get more slice into it or do it with a more natural movement but again here: Good opponents will figure out the different grip/racket position and it will be easier for them to read your shots. With the late straight slice it is more about control and not deception so there I would recommend to turn it a little. When you play on a higher level and don't want to show to early what you do it can be a disadvantage.

      Try to hit it a little bit more in front of you, that will compensate. Try also to use more of a sideways movment, where at the round the head corner you go more into the shuttle and really hit it at 9 o'cloock on the side

When you approach the shuttle for forehand slice cross court , do you approach it like for smash (to keep the shuttle more in front of you) or like for clear (so that the shuttle is above you)? In other words what should be the angle\contact point of attack for this shot ?

    What about normal slice straight forehand drop shot from overhead position (backhand) like Momota? That is super hard to play. Also, can you add more "steepnes" by playing not at 3, but at 2 or 10 respectively? Thanks!

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As you say the straight drop with slice on the forehand is extremly hard. Rajiv Ouseph was in my eyes the player, that got that shot to perfection but almost no players are really good at it or use it at all. I you want to play it you have to slice more over the shuttle so I would say around 1 or maybe even 12 o'clock depending on where you hit it. But really hard to get the timing right and hit it with control.
      And second question: Yes you can hit a little higher (2 or 10) if you want to play it steeper =)

      The goal should not be to fake shots, but to make all shots look the same for as long as possible. Slicing is something, that only happens in the very last moment of the hitting phase so actually there is no way to fake a slice in that way I would say.

    How to increase my strength in slicing the shuttle

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is more about timing and touch then strength if you want to put a lot of slice into your shots

    Can I play badminton wearing mask at my homeyard with my brother??(Our state has no Corona cases yet)

      I don't see why this should be a problem if you stay away from other people and I think the mask is also unnecessary if you stay in your own homeyard. The cheaper masks only help if you already are infected, because they reduce the risk that you infect someone else

      Maybe you were hitting to far behind the body? Then it can also go straight

    6:34 Can advanced player really see the grip difference? It is so far away.

    • @abdullahahmad184
      @abdullahahmad184 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can't see the grip...
      But they can see the angle of the racket face.
      So forehand V grip used on right side has racket face facing the net.
      If I am pro player and I see that racket is not exactly facing straight to net but rather slightly cross (to cross court side) I will know you're trying to hit slice with same motion for the straight shot.
