Well, i am so glad i bought your books and that i met you on YT. I have been playing classical piano for so many years now, that i barely dare to say for how long, but have always been passionate about jazz piano playing. Of course, being lucky enough to have a few friends that are exceptional pianists, i picked up a few lessons about II-V-I and other stuffs not to die like an idiot stucked to classical partitions. And I decided recently, being a young retired, to give some more time to jazz studying. Of course as a classical pianist, I know the essentiality of being taught by a great jazz pianist and most of all by a great pedagogue, those two qualities not being often mastered by the same person… until i met you. Jeremy, every time I see one of your videos, or every time i open your books to practice and understand your exercises, you make my day! This particular video is great to organize the work that has to be done to play a tune properly and at the time increase my knowledge and comprehension of jazz piano playing. Great video! The first 16 minutes are the most important for me. Comping is already a next step. Thank you Jeremy. This is exactly what (and how) I would like to study jazz. I know that you emphasize strongly that it is important to start learning to play jazz in a group but it is not what some want and can do. I am not able to learn from my peers and always learned or studied alone (even at the university). Piano playing is a very personal activity for me. I am intimidated by those who are much better from me and even though it motivates me to study harder (alone) but I cannot learn from them. Working in a group (including school environment) only makes sense if the level of students is approximately the same - no school mixes grade 10 with grade 2 and teaches them together (although some colleges do this in their on line courses 😮)
Yes Jeremy you did surprise me! Both graphics and content-wise this is the best tutorial for us beginner jazz pianist, and also the sound is very balanced!
Any chance the sound could all be louder? Love your videos but they are so quiet compared to others (and the blaring adverts). I have to be in optimal listening conditions to have them on, as a background dishwasher or passing traffic can easily obliterate your good words! 🙏🧡

Great presentation! Your videos have really inspired me to be get back into jazz improvisation after a long break. I’m working through your first Fundamentals book right now and I love the approach. Although I was familiar with many of the basics, all the exercises are useful and I’m learning something new on pretty much every page. Practicing is a lot more enjoyable and focused now as I try to use the ii-V-I licks or rhythms you’re teaching. Many thanks for sharing your insights in the book and here!
Loved this talk and went right to the site to order the books. Thank you! A credible curriculum of months of work right there. And it’s fun. I think one lovely element that validates this right up front is how much music there is in even just the earliest beginner exercises.

I am loving your videos Jeremy, and I have bought your book and have started working through it. I am an intermediate playing but Ive gone back to the beginning with you!! I hear you vocalising the beats when you play, especially in the gaps. I was curious do you only vocalise the gaps in your playing, or are you actually vocalising a drum/cymbals patter all the while you are playing. Are you still tapping your foot as well?
Hi Steven! I don't intentionally vocalize anything - it just happens. I've been advised by a great teacher to listen for the rhythm section in your head as you are playing solo piano. I'm often tapping my foot and I suggest to my students to practice both tapping your foot and not tapping your food.
What impresses me most as a newbie jazz piano player wannabe is how advanced players play this stuff without looking at their hands. That seems so impossibly out of reach.
That's the least of our worries! 😉 Kidding/not kidding...but I would say that I encourage my students to get away from looking at their hands as soon as possible.
As a not-newbie but still-baby jazz piano player, I'd encourage you to keep at it. You'll be able to intuitively feel all sorts of surprising chords in your hand soon enough!
Thanks for your interest! There are three different books. Jazz Piano Fundamentals (book one) is for somebody who plays piano but has no jazz experience. Jazz Piano Fundamentals (book two) is designed for somebody with about a year to two years of jazz piano experience. Playing Solo Jazz Piano is a survey of different piano methods that is best for more advanced players.
Reviewed this 4 months later, after doing a LOT of practicing and it is THE BEST INTRO VIDEO out there. Every beginning piano student should watch it.
