      What did you make of the Barry Lawrence book? I remember thinking, yes, it is easy to be mythologized when you die young, but that is only part of the story. I think the only person of substance that wasn't really struck by him while he was alive was Paul Theroux, who said he seemed like " an empty vessel in search of approval".

    • @kal2487
      @kal2487 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alex14111 I liked the book, but somehow I was left sad for him after reading it, it seemed that very few in his life has a fully clear picture of him, there were just a whole bunch of contradictory observations from people. Must have been lonely for him. Maybe it was just my read. Did you get that sense? Or not at all?

    • @alex14111
      @alex14111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kal2487 Definitely, I think loneliness was a major part of his life from the very beginning and it just accelerated with the Hollywood hype machine, conscientiousness won't do you any favors in those shark infested waters. Another takeaway for me was his generosity of spirit.. with all the craziness that was going on, sometimes I just feel like he was trying to save his father's "soul".. John, who was a deeply troubled man. As far as a "clear picture of him" a lot of the people round him had their own demons.. his own father, Flea etc. etc. I think it was the admirers from afar who may have had a better understanding of him.

    • @kal2487
      @kal2487 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@alex14111 100% But I think he has a lot of friends now, from the other side, surfing the net, there are so many people with same stories about feeling connected to him, but afraid to say it outloud and seem crazy or egotistical. I had a lot of unusual paranormal happenings when I was first vibing with him, and they still happen occasionally when I'm thinking about him. I've never had something like that happen before. IDK. But I feel close to him. If I'm crazy so be it.

    I am going out on a limb here but in my opinion River was the template for future movie stars such as Leo and Brad Pitt to consider taking risks when it comes to the kinda roles that could potentially catapult your career upwards or downward. Just like Kurt Cobain changed the direction of music in the 90's, River paved the way for future actors to take themselves seriously as artist and ditch that whole teen beat persona completely.

    • @Nominay
      @Nominay ปีที่แล้ว +2

      River was the only actor in the 1980's born in the 1970's who could provide for his whole family.
      Of course he was an influence on his peers looking to make it.

      @@Nominay There was so much more to him than being the sole provider born in the 70's. He was wise beyond his years and way beyond his peers as well. A philanthropist with deep insight and could, at the same time, steal your girlfriend. 😂

    River Phoenix's posture is Crazy and I love how they shoot Ebert from behind River with River holding the same posture. The answers River was giving were probably screwy so Ebert's producers added a bunch of exposition. ❤. Phoenix's interviews became crazier and crazier as he neared his disastrous demise. It Devastates me to this day; it's pretty clear now who supplied River with the fatal amount of drugs as essayed in another video.
