The funny thing is, we don’t realize it till we are in our 40’s

And funny thing is if we do realize it in our 20’s like I have. The 50-60 year old managers that are still around who haven’t realized that or don’t get it try to make you feel terrible about wanting to take time off.

Your employer or customers will forget the extra effort you put in by the time the sun sets, but your family won’t forget the holidays, birthdays, etc that you missed, and the extra money doesn’t do you any good if you don’t have time to use it.

Big reason I became a teacher. Working 190 days out the year ain’t too shabby

Former teacher of 6 years here. My experience was different. Teaching absolutely took over my life. Between grading, lesson planning, teaching, afterschool activities, it took up virtually all of my personal time. In addition, my summers was spent cleaning up a classroom and then setting it up before the school year commenced, along with professional development. I probably had about 4 or so weeks of time to myself and then I was back at it. I traded it all for a 9-5 job and never looked back.

@@liesejunh I have heard many horror stories like that from many current and former colleagues. I will say that this is common, but I got lucky with the school I am at. Everything you said can take up a lot of my time, but I make it work for me. and have a fine line between work and personal life. Once my contract time is up, that is it for the day.

You are so right. Let us discuss Mental Health. It can destroy you inside and out. I knew a few people who passed on at an early age. Actually four former co-workers. They were around my age late 50’s. Three were shop owners. Very sad.

I used to stay up half the night at the old shop. Even though there was pressure from the shop to get things done, I did that to myself, and regret ever doing that.

This hits hard with my past as well. It took my mom passing away before I figured it out. I feel my kids have some resentment towards me because of how I used to be.
For those people who are younger, take this to heart it is 1000% true!! Life is more important than work. Remember work will always be there family may not be!

Odd this was my life. Had customer tell me about the most important tool I neglected was myself. I sacrificed vacations, kids games, doctor appointments and always put customers first. That same customer told me they would be at my funeral and someone would come up and ask him where we're going to go to work done now. No amount of money can make up for your lost time working on a job. My was vehicles and making sure customers were taking care of to go on vacation. I remember once I had left of vacation and customer called said they had power steering go out and they had reservations to have their camper at campground that day. I turned around changed clothes pulled power steering hose drove 20 miles to get a hose installed and took another shower and finally left all while my family was sacrificed waiting on me to do this job. You get no extra anything for going out of your way but lost quality time and you will loose your family believe me if you put customers first.

100% man, with this younger gen of tech moving into the field. Loyalty to the highest bidder and try to work the minimum required hrs. I went from working 5-12s to 4-10s at my new shop. Night and day difference in my life inside and outside of work

Went from a shop that would only give 2 weeks of vacation after 5 years of service to working for local city government and immediately getting 3 weeks of vacation. On top of this our O/T was bankable and used for further vacation time. Needless to say in my first year I got 5 weeks of PTO. WORTH IT!

I appreciate this channel, you don't have to be a mechanic to understand different vocations, I was a truck driver I hauled fuels of various types and equipment, I made serious money, but I lived to work and I will attest that your body will eventually reject the hours. Everyone has to learn to balance their lives it can be hard at times, it just has to be done.

Did the same. There was never enough money. It was after the divorce for her. Took the new house, kids, 2/3 my pay check and a new husband enjoys what I worked 2+ jobs for. After that I said what was the point of it???? Now I do not. I am happier. Live to work, you're an idiot if you're doing that.

You are so right. Coming up as a young tech i was in the shop sun up till sun down making very little money. fast forward 25 years 1 back surgery and 1 knee replacement. My biggest regret is i didn't understand this until i had my third child and my mindset changed as i became the old seasoned tech in the shop. Now I'm a transmission specialist and i am very absolute about after 5 pm i don't know any of them and i will never work a weekend as long as i turn wrenches again.

100% right on. Have a sense of satisfaction from your job, but also realize there are other important, at many times more important, than work. I know as a general rule men identify with their work and are proud. Just practice caution as he said. It can be the workplace affair with the job.

Unfortunately living to work has become the new norm for many at least the past 15 years. Prices have been steadily rising and outpacing increases in wages. A lot of people are forced into the routine just to make ends meet. It's getting to the point that the day you retire is the day they lower the box.

You work as hard as you need to to provide for yourself and your family. As a younger person, sometimes this means your focus is on work. As you get older and more proficient you can, and should, change your focus. Sounds like exactly what you did, and I’ll bet you a beer that you would do it pretty close to the same way if you had to do it all again.

I put in long hours, sometimes going in on weekends to knock out big jobs, but I can. No wife or kids, no family, so might as well fatten my checks. It’s also not expected of me.

Last week I put in 115hrs. I'm putting in 16 to 18 hours each day. I'm running a fleet of trucks. I do pricing, ordering, repairs, road calls and everything in-between, and I'm cooked. Yeah I'm making good money but I got nothing left to give. Right now I'm just focused on keeping my health insurance until one of my kids is healthy again. Then maybe I can start to find myself again with a different career.

Don't make enough at work to pay for a 700k house so have to do side jobs all evening and weekends to pay bills. Nice thing about side jobs I can go at my own pace, enjoy a beer and make double what my job pays.

@cliffshenkel7350 Unfortunately would have to move pretty far. I'm to old to start over in a new city. I do encourage young people to research where the best opportunities are and plan to move there for whatever job they chose. There was no internet for me to research best pay areas and advantages for techs when I got started

I can’t help but think it was my disparaging remarks you’re referencing. The remarks were intended as a reminder there are two sides to the employment drum. Influencers only pounding the employee side should occasionally acknowledge the other side. There are plenty of bad shops, bad owners but equally there are just as many bad techs or mechanics.
There’s more to being a good shop owner than just compensation. At some point the ceiling of compensation being sought exceeds the best shop owners ability to afford the tech. Typically after several years of the relationship.
The logical progression to satisfy the deserving tech may be self employment. Maybe some deference to owners perspective in your content and your own personal perspective would be appreciated.
Just for the record 36 years married to the same woman, our daughters and grandchildren are at the house 2 or 3 times a week.
Enjoy your channel and your content, look forward to more helpful videos in future.
