  • Cucamelons are also called mouse melons, Mexican sour cucumber,s or Mexican sour Gherkins. Popular in Mexico & Central America.
I grew Cucamelon plant in my backyard (Canada), the best crop in my garden; harvesting cucamelons every day. I turned cucamelons into a South Indian style pickle.

I grew cucamelons out of boredom during lockdown, the plan was to use them as an interesting garnish for G&T (which they are excellent). I've ended up with an absolute bounty and was at a complete loss of how to use them.
This recipe is brilliant. I have just made my first batch, it is delicious, and I will definitely be making more.

Glad you liked this recipe. Can’t wait to grow them again this Summer. You can make stir fry & add them to stews, soups etc.

Yes, this pickle definitely DOES keep well. If anything, the flavour improves with keeping. One point, though, for those like myself in cooler countries. If you use Coconut oil as per the recipe, it will tend to solidify in the jar and it can look strange, though it is perfectly OK when warmed up a little, when the oil liquifies and can be mixed up in the pickle again. I have also made the pickle using sunflower oil and it is very nearly as good as with coconut oil, and with no solidifying. So, if you live somewhere where coconut oil is normally solid at room temperature, you may want to try a different oil instead.

Glad you liked this recipe. True coconut oil will solidify in cool temperature, I find the flavour is better with coconut oil. Thanks for your feedback :)

I got the cucamelon plant from the garden centre in my city, didn’t start from the seeds. I haven’t seen cucamelon seeds though. Hope you can find the seeds or plants in the garden centre. I’m looking forward to growing this year :)

You need black pepper for the body to absorb the termeric.

This looks like a great recipe for my large cucamelon harvest, especially as I like South Indian cuisine. Just wondering whether the pickle would keep for longer if I bottle it immediately, while still hot, into heated, sterilised jars. I do this with other pickles, etc, which then usually keep for 2 or 3 years. That way, more people will have a chance to enjoy it! Any comments?

This pickle can be kept for a few months in sterilized jars, however not sure if this will stay fresh for 2 years or so- I make small batches & are finished in a few months :) You can also add cucamelons to some of the mixed veggie curries, stir fry with coconut, etc. Hope you'll enjoy this recipe :)

@@thasneen Thanks for such a quick response! I will just need to try it and see. Maybe it will go so fast that we will never find out whether it will keep for a longer time . . .
