I worked hard to promote that shoe brand, Even going to local schools and getting confirmation what version would be acceptable as school wear, One school even put one DVS model on a list of acceptable shoes!. Pretty wild when schoolkids were still rocking 70's leather footwear.
My first box was from a warehouse worker at World I knew in the late 90s, who was told he could make some sometimes, and gave it to me since he didn't skate - it lasted a few glorious months until they let him go for allegedly taking too much like everyone else at World back then, sigh.
My first box came from Active, they even let me pick and choose exactly what I wanted. It was kinda fucked though, they made me pay like 200 bucks in shipping.
Never got a box but kirchart gave me a pair of his emericas at the dc plaza in Kettering Ohio when he came by on his motorcycle. I was wearing his shoes and he goes "nice shoes kid, i said hey thanks I had to pay for mine though. He laughed and said touche bro and gave me his out of his bookbag. It was dope.
As a big skater, LRG would be a dream sponsor. Growing up i could never wear skate clothes cuz i was too big, but LRG always held me down, and now i've got a vintage collection lol. I rly wish they had kept putting into skating like they were years back cuz their team was amazing. Also, DC was my favorite back in the day cuz they were the only company (in CCS) that sold size 14-15 when i was a growing boy lol Now that i'm 35, i just want a weed sponsor lmaobvs.
To this day I do not know Steezus's connection to the industry besides just being a skater...who did he ride for? How did he get all these connections? Etc etc
I think he was really close friends with Malto back in KC, then met Mike Mo and some others in that Girl/Lakai squad and kinda became close homie. Eventually close enough with Crob, Dubz, Eldy etc
I got my first real box in 98' from a company called O3..which was a brand out of Zumiez...the homie Sorin was their TM at the time, and Zumiez is actually local to my area, so I'd get boards and clothes sent to my house, but I could also go into any Zumiez and get a shop discount. I basically rode for Zumiez. Lol
This conversation is SO close to my heart ❤. The biggest problem about free goods is when it ends....Going clothing shopping, board shopping, watch, shoe, sunglasses.....lol. I miss my free goods 🤣🙏🛹
The millennium year of 2000 I got a free shop board after breaking one in front of the shop owner. Not sure if it was pity or my attempts to do a 50.50 pop-off a 4foot mini into a steep bump. 🙃😁
I don’t even get jealous over this shit back when I used to watch those crailtap videos of the guys going through the warehouse and filling their carts up, even watching THEM do it made me just as hyped if that were me instead. Seems like such a fucking blessing I don’t need to experience it myself to see how amazing it is. Keep showing us what y’all got it never gets old! 🫶🫶🫶
