I thought she sat down and texted him for the "answer" then just remembered what he said.

@@wiggletonthewise2141 wow, imagine having nothing better to do than fighting people on the internet over pronouns when the person in question uses ALL pronouns... how about doing your homework before correcting someone?

So she is still within bounds lmao
Um actually, considering the ring is actually semi sentient, it could also be considered the main character.
Um, actually, wrong show
@Jsowau - Food for thought: The Ring itself is a distinct entity separate from Sauron, and its power is to make its wielder thirst for power beyond its reach. To wield the ring is to court failure, and this is true for everyone... including Sauron. Sauron had already fallen once while carrying the ring, and had he acquired it during LoTR he would have fallen again.
It absolutely is the main character. Especially based on how the whole saga is written about in The Silmarillion.
Then we are in agreement, the ring is the main character!
Um Actually, The Ring dies somewhere in the middle of the last book and has nothing to do with the scouring of the shire, which also has nothing to do with the rest of the party, so the main character would really have to be one of the Hobbits. Frodo is probably the most correct since he writes most of the book, but Sam does get his hands on it for a bit after Frodo leaves for the grey havens.
Edit: what the hell was Sauron doing sitting on The Ring for one and a half thousand years? Smeagol is still the Lord of the Rings, it's his precious and I like him best.

This sort of thing often bothered me when I was in school. You often aren't supposed to find your own best answer to an open-ended question; you have to figure out what the test-giver's idea of what the answer should be and put that. If you write your point of view and it is disagreed with, the question gets marked as wrong.

@IrOnPike The title character isn't necessarily the main character.
Zelda isn't the main character in The Legend of Zelda; neither the lion nor the witch is the main character in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Alaska Young isn't the main character in Looking for Alaska. Plenty of examples of that kind of thing, and The Lord of the Rings is another good one.

Frodo is the Ringbearer; the story overall is centered around his quest.
Sam is, according to Tolkien, the “chief hero.”
Aragorn as the king coming to claim his kingdom fits the traditional hero; he is also the only protagonist/deuteragonist who has one of the books named after him
Though the whole series is named after Sauron.

They were all fooled, for another main character was made.
I love so much she didn’t just say Frodo but gave the broader explanation. I don’t really have anything to comment about
It could be argued that it's The One Ring itself, and the story is about who will wield it to be the Lord of the Rings proper, and whether mortals could muster the willpower to deal with the Ring without being overcome by it.
The ring is not a character though. It may have a will of its own, but there is nothing to it besides who has it. There is no personality or character arc to it
The One Ring is absolutely the main character, just not the main protagonist of any of the books.

dance support is the best kind of support during a speech
I'm sorry, the answer we were looking for is 'the ring'.
Surely it's Lord Of? Haven't read em
I have to agree the story is ultimately about the ring's journey from obscurity in a little known backwater in the shire to the fulfilment of its destiny as it is returned to the very fires that spawned it.
It isn't often that an inanimate object is the main character but for something as powerful and world shaking as the one ring to rule them all.
Honestly it fits the trope of the heroes journey.
The one ring forged to rule hidden away in some rural community where nothing really happens forced to go on an epic journey by the approach of dark forces.
Hunted by those who would seek to posses it for their own ends.
Achieving its ultimate destiny as all those it started the journey with fall away one after the other.
And in achieving its destiny it brings about the destruction of the dark forces threatening everyone.
Ultimately helped to achieve its destiny by its one true steadfast companion who cherishes it above all else.
Yeah I will only accept "the ring" or "middle earth" as the answer

Erika’s right though, we spend about as much time with Frodo as we do other characters like Aragorn. With that being said, I believe Bilbo to be the main character of the Hobbit because he wrote the book, so I suppose it’s only fair to consider Frodo the main charcter since he also wrote the “source material”
Honestly, I would argue that the main character is actually the ring.

The ring.
The ring.
That's a different movie.
Little known fact. The actual main character is Grenil, aka Orc nr 7342. You can see him for a brief moment in the battle of Helm's Deep. And he was very nearly Gimli's 7th kill, but one of the peasants shot him first.
Umm, actually the ring is the main character of LOTR 🤓☝️
Could argue celebrimbor in that case… since he made the rings, or sauron for making him make the rings… idk chat its a hard question to answer 😬
Umm actually, the ring is only part of Sauron’s soul, so actually Sauron is the main character. Like it’s right there in the title, he’s literally the lord of the rings.
Imagine if Brennan was here
There is no single protagonist: LoTR is a modern epic.
I would like to argue that the ring is the main character because once it died, they had nothing to make a movie about
What do you mean, they had like nine different endings after the ring died.
The main character and protagonist aren't always the same character :3
I think to qualify as the main character it has to actually be… you know, a character. Not an object. Regardless, it’s actually the McGuffin.
@@quadling3521 The ring is clearly sentient so I think it counts as a character. It actively committed betrayal and murder (Isildur) and purposfully fell out of Gollum's pocketses to go to Bilbo to get out of that cave lol. That shows some active decision making skills to me! 😂
I believe the main character of the books anyway would have to be the ring itself. It is in fact a character and the whole story wouldn’t exist without it
Frodo seems most valid since we are reading a historical telling of events from Frodo's perspective and the perspective of people Frodo has gotten information from. The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel written by Tolkien about Frodo's rendition of what transpired.

ᵒᶠ ᶜʰᵃʳᵃᶜᵗᵉʳˢ

This feels like a Brennan monologue 😂
Game Changer except everyone is Brennan
Excellent.
Frodo is definitely the protagonist, but with the way the novels are structured there isn't really a "main" character.
In conventional writing, it is Frodo.
In the old epics Tolkien based the story on, Aragorn is likely to be the main character.
According to Tolkien himself, Samwise is the closest thing to the main character because he represents everything good.
He's on the journey to protect his friends.
He wasn't pressured into going.
He could've stopped at any time because the Ring wasn't his burden.
He risked everything carrying Frodo to the mountain and all he really wanted, as we see when he puts the ring on, is to tend to a nice garden in the Shire with Rosie at his side.
One of these days, there's gonna be a game changer episode where there are a bunch of things that seeeeeem like they're the gimmick for the game, and then they're either going to figure out that there is no gimmick or sam just gets to choose the gimmick he likes best in the middle of the game.
I would love a gimmick where answering the questions AT ALL deducts points. "The only way to win is not to play"
Ensemble cast - the "main character" is an ensemble cast of characters that each get a degree of focus
Frodo's the main character
Aragorn is the protagonist
Sam is the god damn hero
That CAN be EXACTLY how the game works, Sam. You shoot from the hip half the time anyhow. 😂
Sam saying he had a dream about that, slipped on past them, but near miss 😅
The central theme, at least in the movies, was literally, "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future" so definitely Frodo. But I feel like the books were more to the line of, "This is everybody's story. Everyone plays a part and that makes the whole. It's the story of the world, it's the story of an age, and people may come and go and have their own agendas and adventures while they're here and they may achieve great things by uniting their strengths but ultimately, the story of the world will continue." So I get Erika, it could be any of the characters to some extent but Frodo is the simplest and most convincing answer.
Sounds like Gollum to me
"Um, actually..."
I'm shocked how many people in the comments have completely confused an antagonist with a protagonist. Yes, the ring is the main part of the story, that doesn't make it the main character. It has no character growth, nor does it have to overcome challenges set in place by the antagonist. That's because it IS the antagonist, along with the obvious Sauron. Star Wars episode 4 centeres around the Death Star, that doesn't make it the main character of the movie.
I guess they can't all be heroes, like the sled from Citizen Kane
But it does have Vader so you could say Vader is the main character of all of Star Wars
Negative a billion points for calling Star Wars “episode 4”
@sourwitch2340 That was a retcon.
@sourwitch2340 but he is the main character of the prequels which recontexualize the original trilogy as his redemption
There's huge potential for an argument that sauron is actually the main character
I mean, his title is... the title, I don't know how it could be any more clear.
100% Brennan's answer is Sauron.
So, in an interview with Tolkien, he said that Sam was always intended to be the true hero of the srory and how he w was immune to the corruption of the ring.
Being the "true hero" still doesnt make him the main character.
@@nifemi_o I know I just taught people wo love LOTR would appreciate this info.
Yeah, but Sam is not altogether immune to the ring. According to Tolkien, he could still be corrupted, Hobbits are resistant but not immune. I literally had a whole argument with my friends about this the other night lol.
@@PariahWalker That close to the fires, I don’t think anybody could have resisted, even Sam.
All that for explanation for her first answer to be correct
There is no single main character, my answer however would be the ring, it has a will of its own and is the driving factor for the entirety of the story
Interesting, but does that make R2 the main character of Star Wars, for instance? He definitely has a personality and him having the Death Star plans is what the entire plot revolves around.
But on the other hand, he has little to no arc, more acting as a prop for the other characters to develop and work around for. Which I would argue is the same as the Ring. They're central to the plot, but they're not the main character. As those like Luke and Frodo are the ones who go on a developing character journey. Interesting Luke in a progressively positive light, with Frodo descending into, essentially, fantasy depression.
Just because the story pivots around the ring doesn't make it the main character of the story, because in this case all it means is that it's the antagonist. The ring is the big challenge the protagonists are trying to overcome.
I think there's a good argument that the "main character" is Sauron; HE is the Lord of the Rings, after all! The title is him!
_Thank you_
Yes, but understanding that at some level this is all just a religious allegory of deeply catholic man, maybe Eru Illuvatar themselves is the main character in Lord of the Rings and everything else is just an extension of it them.
