Micro mark truck reaming tool is one of the handiest tools to have for axle swaps. I would also recommend graphite or graphite lubricant for the axle ends, it makes a surprising difference to the oil in a good way. Love the schemes and colors of the box cars!
If the wheels are still a bit stiff try just slightly bending the side frames out. Doesn't take a lot. Another thing you could do is get a truck tuner from Micro-Mark, it will recontour the bearing surfaces to NMRA standards. Finally, make sure you measure the plastic wheels to make sure you get the right size. Some are 33 scale inch, some are 36. If you add weight to the cars, they'll roll even better yet! Great video as always! P.S. Did you get my email?
@@XDFcooler if you're talking to me, thank you! But it's nothing much and I currently have it torn down (building a new one in the near future). It ran both DC and DCC. Nothing near how nice Harrison's layout is on this channel, I admire how nice of a layout he has!
I have to give a rounding second on that truck tuner! I have one, and it makes the older trucks run like new!!! I would ALSO suggest getting rid of any Talgo trucks (or cut the coupler boxes off of them) and body-mounting Kadee couplers on the cars themselves. Finally, you'll probably want to ad some weight to the cars, as they are more than likely underweight.
Since your improving your rolling stock with metal wheels, I would suggest putting EZ-Mate knuckle couplers of the plastic variety on the cars. They work amazing for me, I'd think they would for you, too. I have a few cars with this nifty upgrade and all run well.
We need more of these videos, the more repaired rolling stock the better, especially on them passenger cars. It doesnt get much better then that with metal wheels.
Great video! It’s good to get metal wheels on them, also I just last week put Rapido metal wheels and some knuckle couplers on my Hershey box car as well lol
The Quebec car needs to be one of your transition cars or "universal" cars. A horn hook couple on one end and a kaddee or knuckle coupler on the other. That way you can use it with all of your locomotives!
Very nice Harrison. Maybe now, with the metal wheels, we'll hear the telltale clickety clack of the wheels on the track. Might be louder now when running consists for that reason. The older rolling stock sure does add color to the consist. Bright graphics and colors made the sets pop, albeit unrealistic, but this was done on purpose due to the consumers they were designed for - - kids, and the young at heart. 👍👍👍 7K by Groundhog Day!!!
Very Good, since I just went back to work, I just ordered new wheels for my 1st train I got and will be putting out a new video on changing them and installing kadee coulpers as I finish restoring it.
Are those metal wheels 36-inch or 33-inch? That VERY important as Tyco uses 33-inch on all their rolling stock expect passenger. LIfe Like, Bachmann, and a few others use a combination of both. This is important as the it changes the coupler height when you change out the couplers to knuckle couplers - so be aware if cars start to uncouple for no reason lol.
Right you are CRSR, hopefully the shop advised Harrison of this as well - - a reputable shop's staff should be knowledgeable on this fact and advise their customers.

Awesome videos.... love watching your stuff, but wondered why you don't add links to the very cool things you buy? Maybe you only buy at hobby stores.... keep the good stuff coming!!!
I have added links to things I've bought off amazon etc but the majority of what I buy hasn't been in production for decades and can only be found used.
hey harrison, today has sucked.. i ended up with my car in a snowbank.. im ok but my car needs a new bumper, passenger side mud guard and a splash guard.... could have been worse though..
If your doing a live stream tomorrow I will tell you what I got from the Utica train show if that's ok with you just to see if you have any of what I got
They can cause grime. I've got mostly Athearn blue box stuff and they do collect their fair share of gunk but the worst contenders for collecting crap are the half metal wheel sets on my blue box passenger cars.
If you really want free rolling cars buy Lindberg RP25 trucks made of slippery delrin plastic; a mild push would send a car half way around your layout. Still, the metal wheels add a bit of weight to the cars which helps too. So many ways to to on this one. Good video.
Sounds like that Golden Eagle's motor needs a little lubrication. A few of the Tyco locos that I have did the old hitch and squeal until I put some oil on the motor bearing. Something else: do you have any rolling stock with actual spring loaded trucks like what would be found on old Lionel or Revell rolling stock? I came across a number of them in a couple of lots I bought some years ago, and decided to change out the plastic wheels for metal. I think they look pretty slick. Also, what Mr. Brodzinski said about Micro-Mark's truck tuner: agree 100%. I bought one 12 years ago, and even with the plastic wheels, the cars roll ten times better than before, especially if they had needle point axles. Definitely a decent investment.
If I am going to spend the time, I'm replacing trucks as well as wheels and horn hook couplers with Kadees. This requires modifying the rolling stock, which while I am doing this, I add weight (pennies and white glue). As someone below noted, a truck tuner is a must and of course a Kadee Coupler Height Gauge. I do not waste $ anymore on EZ Mate couplers and all horn hooks must go.
You know u could buy a rapido trains royal Hudson they sell it in dc and dcc your best bet is probably the dc cause the dcc is $800 dollars the dc model is $700 ca
You can clean up those grungy plastic wheels and get an acceptable flat car load with them. Several company's offer such loads but you can get one free with the leftover wheels or use them as junk around the yard or roundhouse. Have fun, Swamp Daddy
I've been doing the same with my christmas themed New Bright and Eztec rolling stock in G scale. but with USA trains their plastic Wheels are a lot better than the stuff from New Bright and Eztec.
Heh, funny, I say the same thing to guys about the old Rapido couplers on N-scale stuff. Yea, they look bad, but they work... and often a lot better than whatever mismatch of knuckles you'll find on n-scale stock.

I highly doubt that wheels from Rapido would be out of gauge from the factory.
Do you upgrade the couplers from horn to jaded knuckle couplers? Also would you modify from truck mounted couplers to body mounted couplers?
I haven't done that upgrade since I don't have enough at the moment but I will eventually do so.

Good job bud I have a question to ask you can you use grease on the metal wheels Because my friend uses grease on his wheels on his o gauge Lionel?
Grease won't hurt them and for larger bearings it might be more effective although oil is usually most efficient for small bearings.
Oh will traction tires on older engines also leave dirt on the track as well?
Glad to see that Kidd Friction has been kicked from your layout using the power of Timken™ Rollerfreight™ roller bearings
New at this how did you know what wheels to get?
