I love the smell of burning punk wood. I'll never look at a tanned deer skin the same way again. I've seen them at the flea markets and walked right on by. Now, I'll stop and feel them and talk to the tanner. Thanks!

+David West If I could bottle the smell of wood smoke like cologne, I'd call it camp fire for men. LOL!! It's definitely a process. Thanks David.

It turned out beautiful. Man, that is a lot of work. What is it about the Ivory soap that works as a tanning solution?

+John Capps Thank you, It took a really good smoke. Most of the hard work is in the breaking of the hide, all the other stuff is broke up into an hour a day for four days or so. The Ivory soap contains emulsified oils(water-soluble oil) that preserve the hide, from what I've been told and read, the oil is slippery and gets in between the fibers lubricating them, making it easier to break. The bigger the hide the bigger the job, I recommend a half hide for your first. If you have any questions please ask and I'll try to help if I can. Thanks again!!

Great series! I love the amount of information you give. I have a few questions though. Is there a purpose to the smoking other than color? And when you stretch the hide is that similar to how some people stretch it on a frame? Appreciate the time you put in to make this.

Glad you enjoyed it! Smoking helps protect from water and moisture damage, the oils and resins from the smoke will penetrate through the hide. A none smoked hide that gets wet will stiffen up some when dried. The hand stretching is the same as on a rack or frame, by hand is easier for me. Thanks for watching!! -Red Shadow

streching around a rope is easier. I use a.grill full of punk over a fire makes more smoke and see two similar since skins together to save time. great video though. I'm about to retire forme this disapline.

I like the rope method, works really good. I broke a finger not long ago and it's been giving me a little trouble, I may need to start using it this season. Thanks for checking me out!! - Red Shadow
