I love how Greg is always changing his setup yet it remains supremely simple. He used to play a skinny kick drum and cranked snare. Now its a big kick drum, deeper snare tuned lower and fat, playing with a stick and a damned mallet (in some vids he uses a big marching sized stick in his left hand), and seriously some low volume hihats that are meant for practice. epic. Greg is my hero.
i'm a drummer and minimalist too, but greg nails it so hard. yea i saw tha mallet...genius impromptu. seems to be momentous feeling of what hand he sticks with what tool in the moment/ feeling kinda thing...brilliant. listening to his words solidifies his original stance.
And you don't have to be fast when you groove, like Greg plays The Tears and Music of Love in the beginning. It is perfect timing. You have it or don't.
yeah, he's using a practice crash/ride as a bottom hat in this video. super low mass bottom hats let the top's total volume work when sticking but with the sock chk doing about the same volume. for a while he was into 3 identically sized cymbals, bottom/top and suspended ride all 20" or 18" flat rides or whatever, but it's interesting to see that blended up.

The best songlist i can imagine, no one ask to dance turn into flower a dream come true, well done deerhoof the best show ever gonna catch them this year for sure
The self-taught percussive insanity of Greg Saunier with gaffer taped drumsticks is a wonder to behold. Deerhoof's originality and radical pop potency make them utterly unique and consistently unpretentious. I have seen them twice now and in awe of their capacity inventiveness. A collective genius that has remained stable now for over ten years I remain in awe at the perennial perfection of these sonic assassins.
I love the last 5 seconds of the video. Minivan is backing away from the stage to leave, and Will Toledo from Car Seat Headrest comes out of the port-a-potty.
I thought it was cool that Greg said, when they play live, they're a completely different band than the band they are on the album. They're like a deerhoof tribute band haha That makes a lot of sense now. Because while I respect their albums, I don't personally enjoy them as much as I do hearing them live. It's a totally different energy that appeals to me way more.
James Brown once told Flea to never leave your wallet back stage & to always back your vehicle into the gig. You never know when you'll need to book it out of there.

Jim Carrey... Say from 'Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind' time frame, - would play a good Greg Saunier if they ever made a movie about deerhoof And for the record... Wilmer Valderrama aka FEZ from that 70's show, could play Ed. Give me a min to think of the other 2 ...🤔
@@willburbur3793 - I hadn't...😂 But lucky for you I like a challenge- so I'm gonna say playing the role of Satomi will be Yunjin Kim from Lost and playing John Dieterich will be Paul Dano. Get Pitchfork on the phone... Let's get this made for TV drama into production- 👍🏻🦈🌪
Lame crowd. The first song should blow up the bank. Great-great Deerhoof. One of they best shows because Satomi is in tune and band plays very precisely and with great sound. Greg has only minimal drum set ha ha. Okay it was raining day and maybe that blues the audience.
Ed is really a wonderful and very innovative guitarist. There were many times seeing Deerhoof live (I've been fortunate enough to see them many many times) his playing almost made me shed a tear of emotion. No One Asked To Dance and Snoopy Waves were written mostly by Ed, which in my opinion proves his musical intellect. He is a serious musician.
music is all about opinion. my opinion is that this is truly awkward to watch. there is no melody to grasp on to. just weird muttering, not any real singing. lyrics makes no sense. can't make them out anyway. in know the nerd army is going to come out of the woodwork to defend the band like they used to live next to you and bring you cookies on sunday.
"No melody to grasp on to" I cringe when people misuse musical terms to justify their underdeveloped taste and closed mindedness. How did you even find this video if you want clear lyrics that make sense and youre scared of oblique instrumentals?
You’re funny - you say it’s all about opinion, then give yours. Fair enough. Then you take preemptive shots at imagined responses. My opinion is - get therapy.
They opened for RHCP in Chicago. I almost left because of how bad Satomi is. The lead guitarist and drummer need to find a better band to be apart of. Seriously. I feel bad for them.
reverberate10 Do you have ears? I didn't know Yoko Ono had a daughter as equally as bad as her. I didn't know they were in other bands but it doesn't make up for their lack of synergy.
The mix is unreal. This could be released tomorrow as an album.
Deerhoof fills me with the utmost joy

Those low volume hi-hats kill me. And they sound great in this mix!
I wish more drummers would opt for minimal kits. Greg does so much with so little.

I love watching Ed play. I'm so glad he joined the band. Keep rockin', Ed!
It's so cool to see such passion radiating from these guys after being a band for 23 years! Respect
Easily the best concert experience I've ever had. Keep it weird. Keep it rocking. Love me some Deerhoof
The best songlist i can imagine, no one ask to dance turn into flower a dream come true, well done deerhoof the best show ever gonna catch them this year for sure
My new favourite band. Greg is pure and well spoken. All talented musicians in their own respect. Much love ❤️
Well-chosen and -spoken. May I recommend 5ive Style?
Deerhoof rocks like no other band, i love em.
i love this. the performance, the editing, the onstage banter, it's all perfect.
Legends
i never realized how talented this bad was until seeing this. one of the best live performances i’ve seen. Satomi as also adorable.
The drummer's interview was DELIGHTFUL
Was gonna say seeing Greg channel his Ken Nordine/word jazz persona in an interview was just icing on the cake.

Amen. Not to mention they are just nice people.
This recording sounds top notch
I miss live music 😭 I hope at least one 'hoof-friendly venue is open near me at the end of this nightmare
I love the last 5 seconds of the video. Minivan is backing away from the stage to leave, and Will Toledo from Car Seat Headrest comes out of the port-a-potty.
holy shit
very cool
The timbres they use are so good; that basssssssssssss
nobody talk about that specifically. they're perfect together
man, i love the transients and the wideness in this video's sound
This is some bad-ass rockin'. Sweet! Those panned guitars blew my mind.
I thought it was cool that Greg said, when they play live, they're a completely different band than the band they are on the album. They're like a deerhoof tribute band haha

Man, John's killingit on bass. And Ed's becoming a bona fide monster on lead. They've never been more tight or exciting.
What’s more amazing is how LOOSE they can be!
Just saw them in Brooklyn. The setlist for this tour is rippin'. Some of the best sets in the history of the band IMO.
Amazing! Deerhoof Deserve
thanks for uploading it as one piece. this is great.
drummer be so tight. dig it!
lol every time Satomi gets audience participation going it takes like three rounds of them going "uuuh wut" and it's amazing every time i see it.
Holy shit, that's a sweet version of Breakup Songs
one of my favs
Come to UK again please !! X I missed you last time. Please !@!!@
I love when they start just making noise in Spirit Ditties and it shows the crowd super confused
reminds me of the old Flaming Lips
Very original!
25:44 is greg playing with his head (literally i mean)?
dankeschön)
James Brown once told Flea to never leave your wallet back stage & to always back your vehicle into the gig. You never know when you'll need to book it out of there.
wow
By the time Satomi picks up her bass they're a runaway train
Coincidentally, i always thought a few of their early-ish songs literally sound like an oncoming freight train
I love Satomi's amoeba outfit ! :)

Greg Saunier is one of the goats, been taking cues from him since stripping down my kit to something similar
wapísimo !!!

DEERHOFF! THIS MUSIC SHOULD ONLY BE LISTENED TO VERY LOUD. TURN UP!
10:50 the grayshirt guy behind dropping something
the drummeris amazing
are they using a sub-octave effect on the bass ?? , or super fat strings ??
I was at this show it was sick and later that day Mac Demarco had a dope set
Lame crowd. The first song should blow up the bank. Great-great Deerhoof.
One of they best shows because Satomi is in tune and band plays very precisely and with great sound. Greg has only minimal drum set ha ha.
Okay it was raining day and maybe that blues the audience.
O żesz kurła! Ja cierpię dolę!
The amount of static in the crowd is a bit disturbing when the grooviest thing in the universe is bubbling sway
*away
I wish John Dieterich was louder in the mix.
Yeah, it is definitely an Ed heavy mix...
You're right.
Jeffrey Barrett He is playing bass, so yeah, he's in there.
3:09 he talk like he riff, no drum kit but yes there is a mind kit
What guitar is that Mustang looking guitar?
Gibson melody maker
Will Toledo coming out of the bathroom at 41:08
OH MY GODDDDDD
Anyone know what bass she's playing? Fakenbacker, or some Ibanez?
It's a Serek bass. I believe it's a custom model.
If you dig this you should checkout Bat Chain Puller.
At first I was like "What the fuck?" but I think I get it now. :/
It may take a second, but once you’re hooked, you’re in DEEP.
Did Satomi pave the way for Babymetal?
Tearsandmusicoflove .cool FREE riff
41:08 will toledo comes out the shitter
I always been thinking that tosh.o is a good drummer.
One of best and very kind and humble person.
I'm still angry that deerhoof is still interested band
This noise...
imo double cut guitar a bit undermixed and, well, hollow body overmixed. pity.
Sounds like Yogi Ono with a toothache
i like drummer only
100% non-embarrassing. Can't ask for better criteria for success.
That looks like a pretty lame, cold, wet festival.
I feel like that one guitarist thinks he's in Metallica
Thank God he's not. Deerhoof has one hundred times the creativity of Metallica.
Ed is really a wonderful and very innovative guitarist. drummer cant play
yeah of course, soo fuckin good
hahahaah greg is so on coke, .. love this band by the way
i never said he was an addict lol
The only 'drug' Greg takes is tea. I'm one of his main suppliers.
nothing beats alcohol

counterpoint: deerhoof is the greatest band to ever exist and every member is in other bands that are good but not as good as this one is
reverberate10 Do you have ears? I didn't know Yoko Ono had a daughter as equally as bad as her. I didn't know they were in other bands but it doesn't make up for their lack of synergy.
you need to listen harder
never liked satomi too much, but I guess deerhoof wouldn't be deerhoof without her
Music, art, is not a competition...take your KPIs and shove them up your arse!
