    The scene from 9:49 to 10:09 is one of the many reasons Steam Locomotives are fasinating things, nothing like grandpa and grandson looking at a machine of the days gone by!

      I agree...some people complained afterwards that he got in the way, but I think it really captured the joy of the moment, and took me back to my roots of finding my love for trains!

      @@CentralPennRailProductions Same here. Took be back to my childhood watching the steam in Strasburg, or even watching 765 go through Altoona. Good memories with my dad, much like that young guy was forming there with grandpa! :) great video

      i find it adorable that the conductor waved at them, it ready gave me flashbacks on how i was at daycare then a metra train passed every day at recess, I always used to wave and saw the conductors wave back

    Top notch videography. Holy cow. That tunnel shot is too good. The one at 6:45 is pretty sweet too, understatement. ;-)

      Thanks Lewis, I'd love to get out more and film things that aren't mainline. I feel there's more of an atmosphere to capture and endless ways to get creative. I appreciate the kind words!

    Top notch shots, well done. R&N definitely isn't afraid to work 425 hard, she sure earned her keep on these trips! They way R&N works 425, 2102 will be well used.

    Simply the best railroad video I've ever seen, much better than those "Pentrex" productions from the past!
    Noticed many new techniques (pull focus anyone and long fades) and of course those angles! Btw loved the wheel slip, reminded me of the old days (the 1970's) working the steam train (wet rail/no sanders) at Magic Mountain before Six Flags.

      Thanks for the kind words! This operation is fairly local for me so I figured I would try some creative techniques and push the capabilities of the camera for the bokeh effect, which I am still learning. I don't film much steam although I plan to cover more operations. To me, the only way to justify the power of steam is through video to capture the sounds, so I wanted shots that would focus more on the sound of the train approaching and then lead the viewer into the sight of the train as it got much closer. I still haven't decided on a new camera yet but something Micro 4/3 could really open up this style even better.

      Another question, do you sharpen in post or within the camera's settings?

    • @CentralPennRailProductions
      @CentralPennRailProductions  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No sharpening was done in post with this video. What you see was entirely manual focusing within the camera. If I have to crop an HD video I will sometimes sharpen the image (very faintly, only about 1%) to make up for the lost pixel count.

    Your videos are always outstanding. The best railroad cinematography and there's no better time than fall to show it.

    I swear, 425 was designed for the sole purpose of stack-talk.

    Would love to see Strasburg 90 leading 425 on a doubleheader steam excursion from Reading Outer Station to Bethlehem in the future.

    Love this video!!! Both whistles are equally good in my opinion. The Reading whistle kind of reminds me of a DRGW 5 chime (obviously with one more chime), while the CB&Q whistle has that mournful yet beautiful sound that is characteristic of American steam whistles

    Damn the videography here is ON! Sooo much love went into this; def. one of the most beautifully shot steam train vids I've had the pleasure of watching. You had some sweet light conditions which is both lucky but you also knew how to take advantage of them too. One setup that's understated but so hot is the light on the engineer oiling 425 in the opening minute. Great work! Thanks for the pleasure :D Tell me what camera / lens were you using? Thanks

    • @CentralPennRailProductions

    It would be awesome if Norfolk Southern supports 425 in the future after they lift the ban on excursions, I think it'll be cool to see that happen.

    Can anybody tell me of what kind of whistle the r&n 425 has on? Because that whistle does suited that engine very well.

    • @CentralPennRailProductions
      @CentralPennRailProductions  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A Reading 6-Chime in the first half of the video, and a CB&Q 3-Chime in the latter part of the video.

    • @KurtisHooey

      If you gave her a long straight track, little consist and no speed restrictions, i wouldn't be surprised to see her be able to reach 90mph.
