    I have had hives. I get it when I'm so stressed out. Its was all over my face. And it itched so bad. I was told to change my job. I did, and it went away. I choose a less stressful job.

      i get hives when i eat seafood but it's hit or miss. sometimes i eat it and nothing happens, other times i break out in hives and itch like crazy. sometimes it develops into watery welts and gets infected. then it develops into nasty scars to where I can't even walk outside without covering up, so no shorts or short sleeve shirts. it's so embarrassing.

    I've had hives for many years after I moved from a tropical climate to a cold climate. One Dr. told me to avoid acid, soda etc. It's mostly on my arms and I used to use over the counter ointment but now I use hand lotion. I don't get it on a regular basis and it generally last a few minutes. Someone said using baking soda in my bath will help but I've never tried it. Thanks for the video, Doctor.

I would recommend possibly asking your medical doctors to add on Montelukast (Singulair) as a 3rd line medication that might get you to almost complete resolution. Thank you! You made me feel better. I am an old lady who suffers from leichen sclerosis (?) but, sometimes I get these hives on the inside of my thighs near my groin. I have been prescribed triamcinoline acetonide for the hives; but do not use it because I use clobetasol for the leichen sclerosis. Too many steroids. I have only used the triamcinolone one time when I was really feeling bad. I feel these hives are set off from being nervous; so I try to settle myself down with music, yoga and breathing. Like you said, not life threatening; but, very irratating.

    I try to be a good boy and not scratch but when evening comes, the stinging and itching starts all on its own.. Hydro-cortisone helps, but not much.
    What seems to help are daily use of antihistamines and for temporary relief, cold compresses (ice cubes in a ziplock.) Finally, do not scratch! They become worse and worse and worse...

    I have Solar Urticaria and I even react to visible UV light & photophobia. I found your page looking up urticaria. But my condition has been worsening. The only change in my life has been spending US winters in South America where it’s summer. Treatments have been unsuccessful. Prolonged sun exposure causes severe flu like symptoms and my BP spikes around 190/155 and it takes a few days to recover. Exposure to fluorescent lights makes my eyes burn and my skin feels like ant bites. I was born with it but no one knew what it was. Mom thought I was just sensitive to heat so she kept me out of the sun which helped. But my limited research suggested that it can cause rheumatoid arthritis? If this is true another mystery may be solved. My orthopedic specialist couldn’t figure out why my joints are deteriorating. Last year I had total knee replacement, the youngest he’s ever done and in April I have shoulder surgery. I have special prescription glasses that enclose my eyes and blocks all UV light and the state has given me a permit that exempts me from window tint laws so I can have limo tinting. Have you discovered any treatments?

    My 2 year old daughter broke out really bad in hives and welts. Hers lasted for 3 full days. The doctor told me to give her children's benedryl. It still seemed like it wasnt working. I was advised to take her to an allergy specialist. We will be looking into that soon

    • @drjackallergy106
      @drjackallergy106  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      April, 25% of people will experience hives at some point in their lives and 95% of the time there is no specific answer why. The most common question I personally would ask in your 2-year-old daughter is if she had a "cold" or upper respiratory infection/ear infection or ANY infection within the last 2-6 weeks. If she is in daycare, then she likely is exposed to every virus under the sun. Benadryl is an acceptable medication but I am not a fan for two reasons.....#1 it only lasts for 4-6 hours so you need to use it 4x/day and so we are always chasing our tail trying to remember when to give it and; #2 it can cause drowsiness OR it can turn your little 2-year-old hyperactive bc it can have the opposite effect in the little ones. If this is her FIRST outbreak of hives, then seeing an allergist is not necessary. If she has a history of allergy or asthma, then seeing an allergist is a good idea. There are longer lasting medications I recommend for children that can help to better control the hives/welts or itchiness. Preferably, liquid Zyrtec (or generic: cetirizine) works well in most children and adults. I would not dare tell you a dose, but would recommend you speak to the pharmacist or your pediatrician or even just follow the dosing on the bottle. BUT, I do recommend that you give this medication TWICE daily, not once otherwise the effects tend to wear off and the hives kind of "come and go". Using the Zyrtec liquid twice daily and then only using the benadryl as an add-on if she has an outbreak despite the twice daily zyrtec can be very helpful and is safe too. Remember, she isn't going to be on these medications the rest of her life but why let the little one suffer, especially at night when hives tend to get worse. My words are simply thoughts and recommendations. Because I have not seen your daughter, it is best to follow all recommendations and medications prescribed by your pediatrician. My recommendations are simply "food for thought." Thanks, Dr. Jack

    • @aprilbradley-stewart680
      @aprilbradley-stewart680 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is her first outbreak. My husband and I both have allergies, so do 2 of my other children, so we figured she is prolly going to have them too. She wasnt sick between 2-6 weeks prior, so we figured it was something to either do with food or the weather since it is Spring here. Thankyou for the advise. that was helpful

    My daughter was 4 when we went to an amusement park. She played in the water park and developed hives (big welts like cat scratches) a few days after the trip. She is now 9 years old and gets them almost daily. I use a topical anti histamine and claritin syrup. I am wondering , could something in the water have triggered this? I have not been able to pin point anything in her diet that triggers it. Sometimes,it does appear when she is stressed (taking an exam for school) but 98% of the time it is random. Majority of her flare-ups are at night, however this past year they are showing up more often during the day.

    I over supplemented on magnesium to get rid of leg cramps and at the same time started drinking pure pomegranate juice, about one litre a week. The magnesium helped the cramps but 6 weeks later I developed hives. Stopped both of those immediately. Still suffering 11 weeks later. No trouble at night when asleep but as soon as I get up I start itching. I’m on 10 mg Loratadine but it wears off after less than 12 hours. Have it around the waist at the back, under breasts and base of skull under hair. Going to try Zirtek as per your next video. Thank you!!!!

    This is why I'm annoyed at my recent allergist saying my chronic rash is chronic hives. It never itches, it's just annoying. After 2 almost 3 years of dealing with it, and finally getting to go to an allergist, doing a full allergy panel and finding no allergies, after having lots of negative and normal blood work from my PCP. She goes "it's probably just chronic hives, that we'll never find a cause for. Take these medications and hopefully it gets better." It's frustrating always getting, it's normal, and we don't know whats wrong.

    Hi Dr Jack. Thanks for this informative video. I’m a South African visiting Florida and have had a bad breakout of what first appeared to be Hives one week ago. After a few days of Benadryl I was prescribed Prednisone and have been taking that for 5 days, but it hasn’t helped at all. And I continue to have new breakouts of rash daily. The rash has also gone through 3 stages and looks slightly different. My concern now is that maybe it is an auto immune disease as you suggested. As I’m a US visitor I am not on medical aid and it’s really expensive to see an allergist here. I have sent you a mail and really hope you will be kind enough to have a look. I’m sure you are busy but I would appreciate it so much. Thanks

      More than likely you are reacting to the toxic ingredients in our foods, the chlorine, fluorine and chloramine and bromine and much more added to the drinking and bathing water supply, and in Florida and many other states various counties spray very toxic chemicals for mosquitoes at night so you are breathing that as well .. and so much more like cell towers... Good luck.

I'm feeling a little bit better must have been do to over eating and stress. But they could be do to the roaches in my house. My house is clean by my neighbor has autism and never cleans his house. Had to put bags under my door just to not get attacked by cig smoke. Nasty. Hm. I've tried a lot of new food which is weird.

    Hello i have been having hives since June. Like you said, they do get worse at night. I went to a walk in clinic and the doctor told me to see an allergist. The wait time is months.. so i m still waiting. The doc told me to take an antihistamine every morning. I really want to find out whats causing it. Theres nothing new to my diet, i have not taken any medication.

    Very interesting thank you. I have hives on my legs at the moment, the itching was driving me bonkers until I dabbed them with acv. We're in lockdown and I'm wondering if it's stress or if my bath was too hot recently or if I shaved my legs when my skin was too dry? Also wonder if tight leggings etc aren't great because the skin can't breath or is that an old wives' tale? I also have seborrheic dermatitis and when I went to have my eyebrows tinted before Corona changed our lives, the beautician thought I'd tattooed them because the skin under my brows was so pink. Thankfully I only end up being a peeling, scratching, itchy, pink mess once or twice a year. I've not eaten or drunk anything different or used different detergents. Anyway I'm hoping the acv isn't bad because it truly helped with the itching. Thank you.

    COVID related hives long term symptom, wondering when it will end?

    • @drjackallergy106
      @drjackallergy106  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Infections are a strong trigger for hives; though we cannot definitively say that a Covid infection caused the hives, it is highly likely that it contributed, especially if someone had moderate to severe symptoms. Treatment would still be the same.

  • @marciamadeira846

    Thanks. I guess my hives are from an infection. They started right ( 11 or 12 days) after I finished 6 days of Cipro for urinary infection, (which had no symptoms, just E. coli in the lab test.)
    I saw your other videos, so I started Zyrtec 10 mg every 12 hours as you said. (Started 4 days ago). So the hives are improving. Also I think you are right that each hive only lasts about 24 hours. Some areas the skin is still dry and irritated but not itchy any more. Thanks for your advice. ( I won’t take Zantac, but I do take Alka Seltzer plus, for stomach and sinus. ).

    Could a hysterectomy trigger chronic hives?
    Mine started this past February, just after my hysterectomy. I had a total hysterectomy (oophorectomy?) and a day or so after I came home from the hospital I had the worst UTI I've ever had. I believe I was prescribed Macrobid and not long after, the hives started. I had hives daily, huge welts/wheals. There was a period of about 1 month or so, maybe a bit longer, where the hives stopped. I had my second UTI and boom, they came back in full force. I've had them daily, since then. I can't help but think the hysterectomy (loss/removal) of hormones triggered this and all other factors are aggravating an underlying condition (but I'm no doctor). I've had my thyroid and adrenal function tested and there's nothing wrong there. I WAS diagnosed with a mixed connective tissue disorder roughly 1 1/2 yrs ago but never saw a rheumatologist to treat it. Any suggestions would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

    I’ve had reactions to cold air for a few years now. Yet this year it started in the spring like normal but this year I’ve been in allergy meds till now. I’ve been to a specialist and no one has an answer. My thought is it may be also triggered by the climate. I lived most of my life in Southern California now I live in Germany. Yet when I visit a dry climate I don’t have the problem. I just wish there was an answer. It can’t be good to take the meds for more than 6 months.

      Fortunately, these medications tend not to be needed lifelong or for greater lengths of time, such as blood pressure or diabetic medications. That being said, there is significant data that shows these medications to be safe for long term use without any significant side effects. The goal, as always, is to reduce the outbreak of hives, then to slowly taper off the medications.

    A city near me is now under a "boil water advisory". So, the grocery stores have been cleaned out of bottled water. Which is why I have stored tap water in bottles (like Powerade bottles). I don't store these in sunlight. Recently before my itchiness started, I filtered some stored water, noticed it tasted funny. Could it be old water that I'm reacting to?
    Now, however, I think I need a humidifier. And, of course, avoid hot showers, etc.

    • @drjackallergy106

      Over time, hives and the residual marks do tend to go away. Any skin condition can leave scars but this is typically if the person scratches too vigorously and excoriates the skin.....the most classic example of scarring by being too aggressive is when people with acne "pop" the whitehead or "pick" the pimple off.....this invariably leads to scarring. I would just recommend avoid tanning until the residual hive marks fade. You can also apply Vitamin E to the hive markings. I hope this helps. Dr. Jack Allergy.

    I've had hives for 4 weeks now. I had never had them before. I did have an upper respiratory infection that started September first. I have asthma and I was on oral prednisone. My pulmonologist puts me on that when I get sick. I was starting to feel better, and had finished prednisone but then I got worse again and broke out with the hives for the first time in September 22nd. They went away overnight. I started Augmentin and another round of prednisone 2 days later. It took until the beginning of October to be better from that, but then the hives came back and they've been there since. I took yet another round of prednisone at a higher dose than my pulmonologist gives me after visiting the urgent care. It didn't help. I am also on Xyzal, famotidine and Singulair with very little relief. I had to stop my meds yesterday because I see an allergist Monday. I'm so miserable. I feel like I'm going insane with this itching!
    I feel like the URI may have triggered the hives, but why is nothing helping?

  • @lindalatham845
    @lindalatham845 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks very clear. I react to direct heat. I can be hot but not have hives. But direct heat such as sun or fires makes me react with large blotchy itchy hives that go after about 3 hours. Use to love outdoors but now have to stay out of the sun. Taking antihistamine which helps a little with the itchy only. I can take the sun on my face feet or hands but any where else especially legs and abdomen react quickly with hives. Also the direct heat effect can be through thin clothing. However if I wear thicker outa wear then it makes me hot but I don’t get hives. Therefore I have concluded that it must be harsh direct heat as the trigger. Don’t know if you call that Urticaria or heat allergy? I have had this for 4 weeks on and off. There is also an underlying very mild itch most of the time as if I have an itchy sweater on etc. Other allergies are penicillin ,sticking plasters, and metal jewellery. I had an insect bite last year, mossie, which came up in a large purple and red bruise for about a week. I have also always reacted to other insect bites such as midges with itchy swollen blisters for days. I think I have too much histamine reaction! What do you think please?

    • @drjackallergy106
      @drjackallergy106  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds troublesome, Linda. You might be dealing with "cholinergic urticaria" where any increase in body temp precipitates the urticarial reaction. What I don't like the sound of is the swelling, bruising and blisters. That sounds more like an inflammatory process above and beyond typical hives. I might be wrong but I would want to make sure you don't have an underlying autoimmune process involved. Trying my recommended treatment won't hurt, and it might allow some extended control. If not already done, please ask your PCP or allergist to look into some basic autoimmune screening including looking into your thyroid and antibodies to your thyroid. Please keep me updated. Interesting. How do hives differ from lichen planus since both can occur anywhere on the body?

    • @drjackallergy106
      @drjackallergy106  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a very broad and generalized question. Many skin conditions would fall into a similar pathophysiologic family with many variants. And as with most skin conditions, determining triggers is even more difficult to discern. The simplest answer is to ask Dr. Google to define lichen planus as the definition is far beyond my simple explanation. DrJackAllergy

    • @drjackallergy106
      @drjackallergy106  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hives and the swelling associated with it (Angioedema) tends not to cross the midline. Oftentimes it will just be a single section of the lip (I break the lips up into right upper, left upper, right lower, left lower) and even the same for the tongue as it is often just one-sided. It can be very scary but we usually will start treatment with the same therapy, in the early stages, but we do address Angioedema differently since the swelling can affect our ability to breathe or swallow.

Changed my diet, Changed laundry detergents, went on a detox diet. Nothing!! It went away eventually.then came back again!! But this time it was acute! Then it disappeared again.then dealt with it again only this time on my palms and feet & came and went less than 24 hours for 3months.now its gone phew. I've had it since I was 13 or 14 years old. I'm 25 now But I get it some days in some months. Maybe some days in one week. Maybe in some weeks nothing at all. They last less than an hour or 2 the most, But fact it they still exist. Maybe it's stress. I used to live with my parents till I was 19. Now I live away from them in a different country. I get them way less often. But when I go back home it's back like how it was during my teenage years. But when I was back home literally every day was miserable especially at sleep time. I'm left with scars from all that intense scratching mostly my legs. I really think now it's stress. When I take antihistamines they still appear but not raised and not itchy but still red. Is that how it works with these antihistamines ? I'm not sure (even though I'm almost an MD 😊 soon) I've noticed nothing that I eat in particular making it worse or better. So in my case is it acute of chronic now I wonder.

    Does it bad taking prednisone because of hives

    • @drjackallergy106
      @drjackallergy106  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It isn't bad if it is for a short period of time. Biggest issue is that if you are not taking a controller treatment (like zyrtec, zantac, montelukast, etc...), you might flare up when you take the prednisone away. I try to use it only when the patient is miserable or if they are going to have pictures taken (ie... weddings, school pictures). And it might seem sorta funny but weddings and school pictures are very stressful times.......and stress can accentuate or even trigger hives.
