The V6 GV70 is already the “Type S” of Genesis. Test drove one. It’s a beast and is 95% of of the Macan S, which when similarly equipped costs $20-30k more.

@star999nine the Porsche Macan with the Premium package plus, which puts both cars (GV70 3.5L SPORT PRESTIGE) at around $65,000 brings the cost to own at 5 years: GV70 @ $60,225 & MACAN @ $63,716. But it's a Hyundai. Doesn't have the heritage of being a sports car. And reliability issues. It can catch fire spontaneously more often than other brands. Hyundai has come a long way, but it's shady recall practices means none of its vehicles can justify that price tag no matter how great it looks on a spec sheet. Give them another couple decades and they'll catch up to Japanese reliability.

@@your_royal_highness Yes, I'm in my mid fifties now. The main advantage the 2.5T GV70 has over most vehicles in this class is they lean towards luxury instead of performance, which is what I was looking for. The main reason for this is the 19" wheels...the perfect balance of looks and comfort. Sure the 21" wheels look a bit better but they are harsh. Even though the 3.5T has adaptive, road previewing suspension, you can't get a lot of comfort out of a couple inches of rubber!

  • @randahlbeach
    @randahlbeach 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    TY David - Great insight!!!
    Thx for this comparison.
You didn't mention the different driving modes and how they compare & contrast. The GV70 offers a wide variety of modes for the driver to enjoy.
As I approach 60 yrs old (and I'm a bit of a car guy) I totally love the luxury & comfort side of vehicles BUT also what to turn it up when I can. This GV70 3.5TT should really be about $20-$50K higher priced. It simply does everything really well and is 2nd to none is this segment when it comes to ride quality, comfortness, quietness all while surrounding the occupants with massive luxury features.
It is called the baby Bentayga for many reasons. It is so quiet & refined when you want it to be - When you're stuck in traffic or going no where fast. My wife asked me if it was an EV as it was so quiet. Those double paned windows really make a huge difference. Plus the massaging seat is nice!!
When you want to drive spiritedly switch it into Sports + mode and you easily hear the roar of the engine and the sweet exhaust notes while enjoying the rear wheel driving bias sporty experience.
The RDX A Spec it an excellent top rated vehicle but that engine is super noisy vs the GV70 and its a much more stiffer ride. Plus I wasn't impressed with the 0-60 time of 6.4 seconds to the GV 70's of 5.7 (4.9 seconds in the V-6). And the RDX weighs 450 lbs less.
Its the luxury components/options, higher tech, standard features & options, the ride quality (can be extremely quiet & smooth AND aggressive and sweet exhaust notes).
Overall the CLEAR winner for me the is the GV70 3.5TT in Sport trim level. I'll take it in that Gorgeous Mauna Red exterior colour with 2 tone interior combination please:-)
In Canada that full load price is $76,500 plus taxes. The F&PDI is included in that price. No discounts from that at all.
The electrified version is coming out in 2023 but in Canada the top trim level will be about $25K-$35K higher cost to the ICE version. Besides its NO Gas requirement the EV version is a littler quicker with 0-60 times 4.3 to 4.6 seconds. For me I'd put down my deposit yesterday if the EV version had a time in the 3.5 second range. It will have a 500 kms range on a full charge.
Thx again David & team - Excellent comparison:-)
PS - Lots of dealer problems with Genesis in the States. Here in Vancouver No problems at all. I have 3 dealers within 40 minutes and the nearest is 15 mins away.
    Cheers all!!

The Acura is a great vehicle and resale will be good. I've heard some of the knocks on the Acura are worse than expected fuel efficiency and very light steering (not a fan of light steering myself - progressive is fine). Can't go wrong with either one, but I test drove the GV70 and was blown away at how good it drove. Note: I drove mostly Japanese vehicles but I might be trading in my Mazda CX-5 for a Genesis GV70..

Both are premium looking on the exterior but I think the Genesis has a better executed interior with more fluff than Acura. If I were in the compact SUV market the GV70 would be my preference. But I'm 6'3, 280lbs, and I need more room than what this class offers. On another note, I hear people criticizing the dealer network issue with Genesis in terms of selling vehicles on the Hyundai lot. I honestly think they did it to cut cost by not building a bunch of dealerships without knowing the success of the brand. Regardless of sales those buildings gotta be paid for as well as utilities. That money can go toward R&D/QC. Once the sales numbers get to a certain level and their reputation has been established, then I'm sure they'll build Genesis dealers. My main concern when buying a car isn't the dealership service department, but the quality of the vehicle I buy from the dealership. If the vehicle quality is good you won't have to be there as much. Eventhough luxury car dealers offer some perks that non lux brands don't, Genesis has complementary service pick up and delivery. You don't even have to go in most cases. Besides that, I'm sure Lexus owners swing into the Toyota bay at times, and Acura owners swing into Honda bays. It's the same thing. If there's anyone in the comments who has taken advantage of the Genesis complimentary service pickup/drop off please post your experience. Thank you Sir for the engineering knowledge!✌🏾and blessings.

Sure, Honda may be a Japanese brand but its automotive products, sadly, are no longer made nor designed in Japan. The Genesis on the other hand is 100% assembled in Korea. It was also 100% designed in Korea with input from both German and Korean designers. So the only real Asian vehicle here is the Genesis.

Actually I did not have good experience with Honda transmission on a suv. My mom bought 2007 CRV and there was transmission problem, she sold that and bought 2008 CRV and she said it had the same problem. Maybe Honda worked out the kinks in their transmission, but I think the japanese have been very complacent in the last 2 decades, like how American automakers were in the 70s and 80s (which allowed the japanese to swoop in and take a lot of customers). The Koreans are the new wave of disruptors of the auto industry.

I don’t like the strong front wheel drive bias on Acura’s. The Genesis is rear wheel bias, as is BMW from what I understand. (As is Alfa). I really do wish Lexus made more of a “driver’s” suv. I had a NX350 and dumped it; it was noisy, slow, cramped and not fun to drive. I did buy a SQ5 and got net $8k off MSRP. Fingers crossed it lasts; my ‘18 Q5 was fine in terms of reliability but I sold it at 57k miles. I will keep the Audi probably to between 60-75k miles. If it stands up through the 50k warranty, I would think I would get another 15k miles with little problem.

Prior gen Genesis G80 and G90 are some, if not, the highest scoring vehicles when it comes to reliability and are relatively inexpensive to maintain. GV70 is better than CR-V based RDX.

Really depends on what you're looking for in a vehicle, driving environment, and driving habits. I really like the sporty looks and handling of Acura with sh-awd. It really comes in handy living out west in the mountains with 65-80 mph posted hwy speeds, twisty mountain roads, 4,000-11,000 feet elevations, and sun/rain/snow on the same road trip.

Korean cars are all other luxury cars brands design mashup. In this case they copied interior design from Lexus LC

What on earth is that hockey puck test? Ridiculous!
SWOT analysis on a car review….very out of place.
You seem to know a lot about the vehicles but the testing and comparisons are questionable.

Thank you for your comment. Have you ever worked for a car company? I worked for a number of major car companies as an automotive engineer, and these are the techniques we actually used - including the hockey puck and the SWOT analysis.

Tell em David! So many "keyboard " engineers😅. I appreciate your background and candid analysis. I have cross shopped my self a variety of these segment vehicles. I'll agree the RDX drive is spot on sporty and engaging, but..... it lacks in true luxury . Just purchased a GV70!
