      It’s almost 2D Xenoblade esque in terms of exploration and level design, with DMC Style-Switching real time combat and Zelda Dungeons. As much of a load of buzzwords as that is, it really accurately describes what the game is and man is it such a great time.

    optional? correct but there's another reason. This is an RPG and you need to get better gears regularly. Chests give you so much goodies that you basically never need to farm. So you either farm equipment or run around looking for chests. Also, the devs seems to be aware of speedrunning because some skips are too good to be true.

    I'm pretty sure this was the video that made me first want to make a custom map renderer just to stitch together a massive map of the overworld. While I only actually made such a map of Autumn's Rise, Autumn's Fall, and Rookie Harbor since those three form a closed loop, it's still incredible to look at. There were a few discontinuities, but they're really not as common as you might think.

  • @gamerprince-tl5hg
    @gamerprince-tl5hg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wholeheartedly agree. The level design has so much depth and requires deep engagement to find treasures. Even figuring out how to get to certain planets/botanics is fun and engaging. I'm honestly considering 100% this game just because of how much fun it is to explore and find items.
    I do think some of the treasures require an annoying amount of searching to obtain though. Maroon Valley for example is a good idea for how the rooms connect through different heights but it's kind of a pain when the only solution to get to a treasure in the room you're currently in is 3-4 rooms away. While I like how Maroon Valley connects its rooms together, I think its an area that definitely would've benefited from having multiple solutions to obtain treasures.
    Areas like Autumn's Rise/Fall, Sapphire Ridge, Bergen Trail, or Gaia's Garden are fine because usually the solution to getting a treasure too high is in the same room or just one room away and I have no problem with those.

    I'm in the middle of my first CrossCode playthrough. The multi-layered level design is so much fun to play through. Though, if I had one complaint, it's that depth perception is sometimes unclear. This is especially the case for rooms in later areas that have several different layers, I often find myself having a hard time figuring out which layer a tile is supposed to be on. I would be curious to see if some subtle ambient occlusion or other shading would help. If done right, I think it could help the landscapes pop even more without taking away from the phenomenal spritework.

    Ever since the SNES era I've wanted a game which makes such strong useage 3 dimensions. The combat is brilliant too, melee, ranged, dodging, guarding with multiple special and elemental variants for each of these all without the controls feeling confusing and trying to maintain high ranks can keep even low level combat fun and challenging.

    • @abbasaltake1414

      Yeah but the platforming is automatic which limites the platforming possibilities and variety which is shame. This game biggest focus are still puzzle solving. Terrarigma had platforming but there was not much of variety. I think Zelda minish cap has best platforming when it comes to top down action adventure.

    biggest criticisms i have is alot of the obscure treasure that is behind a shit ton of hidden platforming and shit becomes outdated if you choose to save it for another time instead of engaging it around the time you first see it. i went back to bergentrail after the temple mine to find a sword at level 21 when i had reached level 26 already. i wasnt grinding just killing enemies naturally and exploring all paths and side quests i can do. i feel if they made the loot scale to the level at least to a certain cap it would avoid the problem of having done work for useless loot. and considering it gets exceedingly complex where it almost burned me out there has to be some payoff that matches the work.

    • @LupisLight
      @LupisLight 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that happens. FWIW You don't really have to worry about your equipment level matching your experience level anyway; there's no reward or penalty for whether your equipment actually matches your level or not. Also, some of that gear can be used as components by certain traders to craft better gear, so it is often worth finding anyway.
      Also the DLC has new 'Ascended' end-game gear that actually does scale to your level, so there is that.

    Great analysis as usual! One question: It sounds like if you accidentally fall, you'd have to backtrack quite a ways, or at the very least it'd be annoying. Is this an issue? Why or why not?

    • @howllo
      @howllo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's been a year and you're unlikely to care about an answer, but I'll still leave this here for posterity:
      There are cases of falling off a ledge and wanting to hit yourself because you have to backtrack quite a bit, but that's mostly because the entire game is designed to be challenging (from the combat to the puzzles, unless you turn on the settings that make it all more friendly, you're in for exactly the right amount of frustration before you succeed). And in any case, the longer paths you can take will usually have some sort of "checkpoint"/mechanic you can trigger that allows you to get back up faster after you've been there once, like an energy wall that comes off or a booster you can turn on.

    I agree with most of your points, but I think that CrossCode puzzle design has one major flaw.
    The actual rewards of the puzzles, especially treasure hunting. I mean, it is rewarding in its own to get to a hidden treasure, but I can't help but be disappointed when 9 times out of 10, the treasure itself is mostly worthless.
    Most of the time, it's just some materials I could farm or buy 4-5x the amount in chest if I farmed instead of solving the puzzle and doing the platforming... And often, I just found them to be completely useless, as I've gotten what I needed through normal exploration.
    This feels especially true for those most hidden treasures, which just aren't any better than barely hidden ones.
    (As a disclaimer: I did not beat the game, but I have almost 30 hours in and I somehow doubt that the rewards change drastically further down the game).

    • @herrajukka

    and the puzzles can be a little boring, the ones that get more complicated with VRP speed/slowdown and elements are cool, but a lot are just "get to correct height, throw ball at right angle, win"

      The wave/electricity bosses definitely took me a while to beat, but I really enjoyed the monkey/whale fight tbh. They have difficulty sliders too so if you’re getting beat up by a boss you can adjust the difficult for a short time to make it more manageable.

    Oh heeelll no
    I can say many good things about crosscode but good level design 100% not one of it
    After first location all "good level design " ends and we end with 20 minutes search 1 step to jump on higher lvl.
    And it's good if that step at least in the same room

  • @Max-tq5fs
    @Max-tq5fs ปีที่แล้ว

    I really don't like the overworld "puzzles" CrossCode has. It's pretty much always running around the whole area til you find that one way to get up and then it solves itself. Feels much better in Dungeons, where puzzles are not only more complex, but often restricted to one room, so you don't have to run around like an idiot just to find the start.

    My god this vid is so well made, gj man.
    I really love this game. However, there are 2 things i didn't like that much:
    1. I love how long the dungeons are but why are they making a race out of it. I want to enjoy them, but I`m just in hurry just to realize i lost the race. Even I`m not trying to win the race, it feels weird to get out of the dungeon as the last.
    2. The combat is good and all, but i wished the ranged combat were a bit slower but would make more damage. So i don`t have to click like a maniac on my mouse 😂

    • @adamxue6096
      @adamxue6096 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never won any race, but they are also optional.
      You only get different dialogues if you win or lose the races.
      This is the same with the duels against Apollo.
      Which I still consider to be three of the harder fights in this game...

  • @samhodge7460
    @samhodge7460 ปีที่แล้ว

    While I'm enjoying the game, I fundamentally disagree that this kind of level design makes for engaging gameplay. Finding chests is not really a test of platforming skills or puzzle-solving as it is an exercise in running around until you find the right ledge. This quickly becomes monotonous for me. It's not a question of "am I good enough to get up there?" but rather "do I feel like spending another 5 minutes wandering around an area I've already been through 10 times?" One way to remedy this would be to add a timing element such as crumbling/moving platforms or timed switches (there are a few, but not enough). That way it becomes a skill check instead of a patience check.

    I really cant make my mind on this one.
    The vertical exploration, puzzles and combat look really good. Story and NPCs look interesting and well written as well.
    On the other hand, I also sense some MMORPG elements I fucking despise... Heavy exp grinding, material grinding, and shallow hunting subquests with no lore or narrative behind. Lazy time sinks.
    I really don't get it... Where is the fun in having to whack 1 million plants? Who tought that repetitive shit was fun? Just give me a good puzzle with a treasure chest at the end of it FFS. Or a hard battle with a a good item as reward.

    • @AeroFlash15
      @AeroFlash15 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The plant smashing is optional. There is a sidequest involving them, but it's progression based (you complete it as you progress through the game).
      And what said is exactly what the game does, give you treasure with rewarding puzzles. The game's dungeons are full of them.
      Sidequests have plenty subplots with their own unique areas and challenges. There are hardly any fetchquests, as far as I remember. This video only covers the environmental traversal of the overworld and doesn't at all touches on the overall experience.

    • @gamerprince-tl5hg
      @gamerprince-tl5hg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "heavy exp grinding" uhh... what? The game never requires you to grind. Most CrossCode fans says that equipment matters much more than level and that holds true.
      "material grinding" is optional and not required. You can just buy equipment from the shops if you want though they won't have modifier abilities.
      "shallow subquests" you must've not played the game past the first town or you're just trolling lol. The game hardly has any "fetch quests" or "monster hunting" quests past the very first batch of quests you get in the game (the Rookie Harbor faction quests). Most of the side-quests are mini-games, optional dungeons, bosses, and more.
      I really wonder about where these dumb takes keep coming from.
