    I was a logger, Humboldt County (72-89), I’ve seen a lot of old growth and second growth stumps. Could be as young as 250 years. Probably not older than 500. Redwood trees die from the top down and inside out. Fires and lightning strikes being the contributors. If the tree is not a snag and solid through-out, then not that old.

    That tree more than likely is far less than 500 years old and could be as young as 200years old. From the video it appears it has been open grown with not much around it for a long time. The fact you could get a line it fairly easily shows this. A beautiful beautiful tree to be sure. Age of trees is hard to address as it depends on a lot of factors, namely what other trees are around it. Just to put this in perspective, I just counted the rings on a 6ft DBH redwood at only 134 years old. This tree is 9ft DBH. Of course I have also counted rings on a 5ft DBH redwood at 250 years old so...
