  • Lets look at a few pre made 20$ survival kits and see if they are worth the money or just a waste. I was asked by someone what I thought of these kits for beginners. I had never bought one so I decided to pick a few up to see what they offer. This is not a sponsored video, I purchased these myself. If you wish to see the larger more expensive kits leave a comment and if there is interest I will review them also.
    As noted this is not a sponsored video, if you enjoy the content and would like to support the channel below are some affiliate links to my most used gear. I earn a small commission on any purchases mad using the links at no extra cost to you. Thank you for your consideration!

    I probably get 2-3 offers a month to "review" items like these. Poor quality in design and function is the reason I will continue to turn them down.

    The first kit had too many redundant items. The second was basically the same. I think the same company makes them, but under different names. Like the first commenter said, better to buy the individual items. Definitely do another video on your own kits.✌️🇺🇸

    Id like to see others more expensive kits as you proposed, as well as custom kits templates.

      The sad thing is... If I had made a video camping with this junk overnight It would have gotten way more views and I could have sold many more of them.

    The striker on those bracelets gets easily magnetized, guess what happens to the compass😂

      The knife is the big no go for me, the thing is so flimsy I am surprised they can even sell it. Still seems quite a few people buy these to stash "just in case" or give them as gifts not knowing better. They are junk.

    Wire saws are no good if the wood is evenly marginally green. At least not that type. You could notch a speingy limb and try it that way.might make them last a little longer. I think I seen one somewhere that looked thicker and bristling with barbs. Not sure about those either.
    Have you tried the one that looks like a chainsaw blade? Thoughts?

    I bought one from menards , waited until it was on sale. I have watched several videos there all the same with changes. You get what you pay for. But you have a box to start with.

    I bought one of those cheap kits. Cheap. Have been thinking that thin metal saw is worthless. Seems it would be better to have a folding hand saw tool.

    How flexible was the blade of the knife? Worth redoing with a better handle or turn into a spear or out of reach food gathering tool?

    Agree. Better buy a Mora or a Hultafors knife, a usable ferrorod and maybe sonething like paracord and your money is spent much better.

    I saw a video of a different wire saw being tensioned with a stick to make a bow-saw. I have no idea if it'd work for these.
    I think a fun video would be to make your own $20 kit and compare/justify your choices for criteria like firestarting, warmth, shelter, navigation etc and being visible/audible to potential rescuers. Whistles are nice but 3 in one kit???

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bow saw might be the best way to use the saw, it sure likes to jam up, might keep it from breaking. $20 is no doubt a real challenge to put a useful kit together but might have to see what I can work out.

      @@Scablands_Scavenger When I went through military survival school, many many moons ago, we were taught to use it as a bow saw. The USMC saw is the best as it has thumb screws on each end so if the wire breaks you can loosen one thumb screw, re-insert the wire and get back to task. It is also issued with a spare wire and I have used them to cut wood, plastic and light gaga metal without an issue. However, I will opt for a bahco or silky because I have them.

    4:35 what do you want it to do hang an elephant? survival is about functionality not feelings if they replaced the bottle hanger they can put in a better replacement.

      These kits are not "survival" or "emergency" kits, they are junk. They are designed at a price point to include as many items as possible to appeal to the unsuspecting buyer. Most of the included items are trinket toys or will fail on first use and certainly do not hold up to the suggested uses they are advertised as on the sales page. I bough these kits to counter all the 5 star reviewers who are given these for free or paid to promote them hoping people will consider buying real gear instead of this counterfeit junk.

    @daviddelgado4620 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Take a real moment look at what's in the box, reinforce what you get and treat the items a little gentler. If you have to rough house everything, just proves you really don't know what's going on around you in time to use your gear to help you.

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I appreciate the sentiment, but disagree 100%. I was way too nice in my video, these are not beginner friendly or worth buying. Most of the items in this kit are made like children's toys... or worse. An honest look shows that at first glance. The "knife object" will fail if cutting more than paper... not an opinion, it is junk. It bends under lightest force and the "lock" wedges under the blade creating a danger to the user. Or it misses the lock and folds shut on my hand. You may have to use this in a situation that involves stress, anxiety, injury or other situational conditions and "rough housing" may be required to survive. The worst part about these kits is people defend them being dangerously cheap ... because they are cheap OR it makes them money making videos using them to "survive" overnight in the back yard OR they are paid to sponsor the kits... and pretend they are good. I know this because I turn down offers weekly because I will NOT promote junk.
      This is incredibly misleading to those who are looking for real advice from people who should know better. How often will people be able to dictate the parameters and severity of an emergency they may find themselves in? Having a box full of trinkets that you have to fix, replace, or use as if they are made of glass is not a good plan for survival. Many people that purchase these items are exactly what you describe "don't know what's going on around you in time to use your gear to help you" you are correct, most people who buy or are given these kits as gifts will be genuinely ignorant of survival skills and proper tool use and this "survival kit" will do little good or possibly make their situation worse; imagine not knowing how to use a knife properly and getting one with a non functioning lock and bendy handle?... it would be like handing an infant a running chainsaw. I am genuinely surprised these companies have not been sued for faulty items leading to injury and misleading advertising. I am also surprised so many people defend these "kits" as anything more than novelty junk aimed to take money from people who do not know any better. If you have one and found use for it, so much the better. I will salvage a few items from mine, but stand by them being junk overall and not worth buying for their advertised use.

      @Scablands_Scavenger  หลายเดือนก่อน

      No doubt. I think I may not have got my thought across in the video well, that being many people buy these kits and throw them in a pack, box or vehicle "just in case" thinking they are an all in one ready to go solution. This may cause issue their car breaks down on the side of the road and they assumed the flashlight was good to go.

    You are the only person I have seen review these that calls them for what they are and I have said for years and say now... These kits are junk. If all you want to do is Check a box... Theyll check that box but in reality you can wrap yarn around book of matches and have a soda can top for a hook. It checks all the boxes cordage,fire, and food yet youre screwed just as screwed.
    Having the items does nothing for your survival if they dont work. If youre gonna spend 20$ to buy of these and half the kit is trash maybe just buy single item thats better quality and have one good item that does what its supposed to do as opposed to 15 items that do everything halfass or below par.

    As bad as they are and you could equip better at the given pricepoint, better than nothing and having/not having one could make a huge difference in a survival situation.

    • @Scablands_Scavenger
      @Scablands_Scavenger  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly I think some of the items would be a liability, the knife for instance is so cheap it will break when used and could cause injury. I tested both of the compass against each other and they did not agree on north, I suppose if it was all a person had you would technically be better off... sort of, depending on your skill level. But I would not encourage anyone to purchase one of these over 3-4 good quality pieces of gear. If you lose a finger or fold your hand in the knife like object and bleed out or get an infection.... not good. some of the other items just plain do not work. These companies are selling junk and taking money.
