This record is a revelation. I knew Del Shannon had vision enough to cover the Beatles first here in the US, but this rendition of "Under My Thumb" is sung as if Mick and Keith wrote it for him. He not only sings it very well, he understands the song just as well. This is just a subtle reminder of how truly great he is.
Popped up on my You Tube play. Like WOW! Im 68. A record collector & NEVER knew this existed! What a cover! I remember on my Sanitation truck it was my turn to drive. 1 of my helpers gets out & said WCBS FM, N.Y. just said Del took his own life. Man, that ruined the rest of my day. I think it was an accident while he was cleaning his rifle.✝️
In the early 60s, Shannon toured in England with both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. He was an artist greatly admired by groups in Europe. He released versions of FROM ME TO YOU and UNDER MY THUMB in America, a year before either of the groups were well known in America. Much underrated, Shannon was the most progressive of the American rock artists, recognizing the coming trend.
@@raymondtonns2521 In the early 60s Del was big. I think a few classic bands like the Beatles were support acts on his tours. Imagine that, the Beatles a support act.
GREATLY UNDERRATED, he was one of the true geniuses and most forward looking of the American rock artists. He suffered from manic depression and committed suicide. George Harrison had wanted him for the Traveling Wilburys.
WOW, the late, great Del Shannon was awesome in this Under my Thumb song and both The Rolling Stones and Del Shannon versions of Under my Thumb were totally awesome!!
One of the best songs Mick&Keith ever wrote. I like the slow, live version they played at Altamont the best, but just hearing Del’s version for the first time… it’s pretty damn great too!
Close to the original, with that marimba. I put this in my "Stones..covered" playlist with other covers by Wayne Gibson, The Kingsmen, The Kindred Spirits, The Who and Tina Turner turning the tables! Thanks for the upload!
@@danx42first time of hearing Del Shannon's version of this classic and it's a superb version IMHO better than the the Wayne Gibson version which was the big hit in the UK!!!
First time I ever heard this...and I'm old! And I'm a bit of a collector too! It's an excellent cover, and what the hell, the Stones didn't release it as a single. But it would have been interesting to hear Del put a Del Shannon twist on it. I like it, but because it's so close to the Stones version, I don't need to ever hear it again.
Del Shannon did this song real justice, as good or better than Mick Jagger himself! I’m glad he released some of Englands hits here in America because they took American songs and released them over there. Fair play turn around! Yes in deed the change had come!
Muy buena versión a este tema de los Rolling Stones, cuando los Rolling eran mágicos y fabulosos con Brian Jones y ese sonido tan especial que tenían con él en sus filas.
Controlling behaviour by The Rolling Stones in 1965 (?) from their 'Aftermath' LP I'd rather have equal rights in a male and female relationship or even a modicum of female domination as long as they;re real eye candy and not middle aged harpies.
Goodness. Del trying to expand his range. Which is something he and all around him acknowledged. He figured his original style had been passed by, so why not try a different style? It's sad when you listen and can see him get so close to a legit new Del then he fades out of sight. He came back briefly in 1982 then that was it, no newer Del. Only the old Del, done over and over. No new hits to sustain a unique career. Here Del nips around the borders of a new Del 'sound' but basically ends up with an impersonation of the Stones version. Nothing says 'Del' like the vibrato or the music Tron. I like his guitar work here, however, and it showed promise. It's a shame he didn't go more into that direction.

Is this the same Del Shannon who sang "Runaway"??
Yes

The drum is awesome
If the Stones recording is ten , Del Shannon version is a 9.5.
Love Del. This doesn’t venture too far off from the Stone’s version.
I love Del Shannon. He could sing anything! This is so cool! ❤️
Aside from the Stones this is the greatest rendition of this song I have ever heard..
One of the best songs Mick&Keith ever wrote.

Jones wrote it
I like this so much better than The Rollings Stones version! The being beat of the guitar is fabulous!
Del ROCKS! ❤️

So under rated, loads of great tracks not charted
best version ever sung by anyone- thanks del for the music.
Desconocía está versión de Del Shanon, fantástica!!!
Less mysogynistic than Mick.
Probably not difficult!
Now check the 1974 cover by Pentagram!
Great, maybe even better than Mick honestly
Yes,this is better...
He committed suicide age 55 (1934-1990).
Naaa,,Natalie,,, nouthing, good , but don't do this
Great version of Mick and Keiths gem.Del was a highly talented guy whom i first saw way back in 1962! Rog.Pacific Sunset Records
If he didn't die he was suppose to take Roy Orbinsons place in the traveling wilburys. As the rumor goes

A great cover.
this version is popular in the Philippines
Has Quentin Tarantino heard this?
His vocals sound alot like Mick's. Great cover Del
Grande version Pas étonnant en fait de la part de Del Shannon MERCI pour ce partage
love this track thank for the sharing
Dels covering this song the same way the Stones did it. Bringing nothing new to it. Its just a Stones rip-off. Tell me why I'm wrong.
Fantastic cover it holds up very well

I bet mick and Keith felt honored to have del cover a song of theres 😁
It's misogynistic.
He wrote many songs
Amazing sound fro Del.
Rien à voir avec les plus que tristes et nuls hardrockiens
The Best versión!
I dig this cat Del Shannon...
Incredible
I saw Del Shannon live in 1980. I wish he'd done this in the set.
Yes the greatest ❤❤❤

Del shannon mocks the rolling stones hit under my thumb
Brilliant..:)
Alto tema en la serie de historia de un clan
I knew he did this song and everyone told me I was crazy. I was a high school freshman with a dang good memory
The Wayne Gibson version is the best and a dance floor filler. KTF.
The image is perfect for today!!! The world is under "their" thumb and what we need is a return to LIBERTY!!
May This song inspired OMD to write Electricity .
Guitariste de feu !
Emotional abuse in the making 😂
I think on his Runaway 67 mono disc I detect Mick Bagger in chorus ?
Jagger, sorry.
No dejo de escuchar este tema ❤
