SAME! I started with The Quarry Novels. In 2013, my goal was to read all of The Nathan Heller Books starting in January with "True Detective" and ending in December with "Ask Not." I finished them all by Halloween of that year (I bought "Ask Not" the first day it came out and I had it finished by the end of that week)
Great interview with Max Collins. I grew up with The Untouchables on TV and I have them all on DVD. Have to pick up The Scarface Mob on Blu-ray-I only have the DVD. I remember it was controversial on TV because of the violence and the depiction of Italian Americans. I was in junior high school at the time so naturally the kids had other names for The Untouchables, I.e., The Italian Hour, Cops and Wops, Guinea Gunsmoke, etc. I guess things haven’t changed much as much as we think.
These are always interesting conversations. And I'm excited to hear about those 1940s Dick Tracy movies coming to Blu-ray! I like all of those and I'd like to check out those commentary tracks too

Love this conversation. But life as a three-act structure? PSHAW!!! Shakespeare covered that in AS YOU LIKE IT, the Seven Stages of Man speech. Addendum: Just SQUEEEED loudly upon hearing that the Dick Tracy movies are being put out on Blu, with additional Mr Collins commentary; I treasure my Roan set, so it will be great to upgrade.
I need to download this and put a black and white filter over the whole episode. Maybe throw some of that sweet hyperbolic Untouchables music over the soundtrack here and there. And some Walter Winchell.
I believe novelist/philosopher Ayn Rand was a big fan of "The Untouchables". She is said to have had a big crush on Stack. She may have seen Stack as a Howard Roark figure, the hero of Rand's "The Fountainhead".
In the movie, Barbara Nichols seems to have a crush on Bill Williams, who is one of Ness's men. I always wondered why she didn't have a crush on Stack. Maybe it was true based on Fraley's book.
Sweet. Max is fast becoming my favorite guest. Timely chat too as I just scored a whole Stack of Untouchables DVDs at a library sale.
I grew up reading so many Max Allan Collins books--it's always a pleasure to see his interviews.

OMG! The last Max Allan Collins discussion was wonderful, so I'm sure this will be a treat.

Good interview and cool video Heath!👉🙂👈
Just ordered my copy. Woo-hoo! Thanks for another great recommendation. I wanted this when you first talked about it. Can't wait!
✌️♥️🙂
Great interview Heath definitely encourages us to make a deeper dive.
Thanks Heath. Always great to listen to a Max Allan Collins lesson. I will checking out Scarface Mob.
Interesting hearing his opinions on Ken Burns. I always was a bit suspicious of his films too.

I remember Robert Stack saying the role of Ness was first offered to Van Heflin and Van Johnson. Stack was third choice.
