Hi everyone! Welcome to my channel and thanks for watching me repair this old high chair for my neighbor. This is the first video in which I talk and I was really nervous about it. Please tell me what you think of it. If it sucks, blame Jay at @flippingdrawers, he is the one who talked me into trying this!! 🤔Watch a video of his too while you are there. Next up is a 120 year old antique oak desk, see you then! 🍻
Haha çok teşekkür ederim nazik arkadaşım. Kamera karşısında konuşurken çok gergindim. Artık ben yaptım, şimdi sıra sizde!! Umarım bu iyi tercüme edilir. Şerefe 🍻🤗
When I first watched your videos the trains were annoying, but the more videos I watch the more I enjoy their sound. I feel like I’m on the right channel. I lived near elevated trains, so maybe I’m back to my childhood.
The trains can be very annoying when I am trying to shoot a scene. Until recently I edited out all train sounds but then decided to just embrace it because it is part of the ambience here. I actually never even notice them anymore.
You are a very kind person for writing this but I sound like a dweeb. I cut out the part in the video where I blamed you for convincing me to talk on camera! 😉 Maybe I'll add it in the pinned comment as a disclaimer... 😅
I refinished the old highchair that the seven of us used. I didn’t have to pull it apart, but I did replace the foot rest. Took off five to six layers of paint. I’m proud of myself.
I didn't get to give it to her in person because she tested positive for covid the day before I finished it but she sent an e-mail saying that she loved it so all is well!!
I'm a sucker for chairs anyway, but a high chair !? I remember refinishishing one that we'd been given for our first child around 30 years ago - it went on to serve my 2nd, and was then given to friends with a first born. Chairs share so many of our cherished memories. Love the innovative way you use wood to patch repairs rather than fillers/ epoxy putty etc. Learning so much; you're a star, thanks.
What I would give to have the high chair I had for my first son. OMG. Just came back to finish watching the whole video. Matt I almost cried it’s so beautiful, I could see my little boy at 10 months feeding himself. Messy yes, but he was very independent. He was walking at 9 mos. Beautiful job sweetheart.
Thanks! This was a simple refinish and easy to do for her. Did you watch the one I posted before this? That was a cool transformation, which I am super happy with.
That's my childhood chair. Starting 1951 to 1962. Had two because first born were twins. By 1962 and six children later Mom said enough. Now the crib was something . I've never seen another like it. I was literally a screened conversion type . Like maybe something from tropical areas to keep mosquitos and bigger than todays. Converted to toddler bed
Beautiful! I Hope the Person You did this for Watches this and Sees All the Craftsmanship that went into Restoring it. First Time I heard Your Voice. It's Nice. Your Narration had a Natural Flow to it. Your Descriptions and Pro-Tips were Understandable but not too Wordy. So. Your Dog has a Glue Addiction? It's Always the Sweetest Ones You'd Never Suspect!
Hey, thanks for the very nice message. This is the first time that I have spoken on camera. I was super nervous and hate the sound of my voice. It was painful to edit and listen to myself. I will try it again but I will probably do a voiceover after I edit so that I can control sound and script a little more. There were several times that I was editing and had to cut clips unnaturally to cut out things I didn't like. The person for whom I refinished this piece doesn't know I have a channel so I doubt that she will see it. 🍀
Beautiful updated piece. So kind of you to do this for your neighbor. Enjoyed you talking in this one. As usual, enjoy seeing your pets. Missed the cat this time. 😊
Stunning restoration 😊 These old highchairs are the best. I see so many plastic ones on the roadside heading to the landfill. Thank you for giving this one some love. Cheers from the Finger Lakes of NY. 🍷 🍷
Thank you very much! I actually have two more of these in the queue for the channel. One is a family piece that one of my parents used, then me, then my kids, and I recently found one on the side of the road, completely trashed.
@@Restorology I have two in my basement from my mom's house. One has no tray and the tray on the other one, cracked where the wood was joined. I will hopefully get to them this summer.
Looks like the high chair my Grandpa made for me when I was a child 74 years ago. It has been passed down from generation to generation! I don’t know where it is now.
I worked on this one for a neighbor but I also have one that has been passed down at least three times. It will probably make it on the channel at some point.
THAT was fun to watch. It brought back memories of all the high chairs of my formative years, so many high chairs in so many homes. Every home had one. I remember most of them in natural finished hard woods, or, painted white hard wood. As for the strap, I think the nylon is preferable to the leather. Just as strong, and more flexible, and washable if need be. That particular high chair had many parts because of it's style. In the old days a lot of them had a solid back. You made your neighbor ecstatic, I'll bet. On to another generation of grubby little hands to cake up the finish.
Great results! I think the narration helps get across even more educational stuff, like the part about running the drill bit backwards to clear out the glue.. keep up the good work!
I refinished a highchair 35 years ago, for my oldest daughter. I stripped the tray down to nice wood, but when I got to the legs, I decided I wasn't up to stripping spindle legs, so I painted the high chair country blue (it was in 1988), and had my mom paint rabbits on the head rest. I use it now for our grandchildren, but have somehow misplaced the wood tray! I need to check thrift stores for a wood tray, so I can use it as intended!
You might be able to have a decent wood worker make one up fairly quickly. If I had to make the one on here, it wouldn't take much time and I am no professional. I don't blame you with the spindle legs, it sucks trying to clean them up.
Thanks Brian! This did turn out nicer than I thought it would. I had trouble placing a date on it but it is SO much better than what is sold today for sure! Cheers mate 🍻
I really enjoyed this video. What a worthwhile project helping your neighbour out. I expect that they were thrilled with the results. I very much enjoyed your spoken commentary and hope it is a feature you will continue in the future. Best wishes Alison
Thanks! This is the first video in which I have talked to the viewers so thank you for the great feedback. I was nervous about doing it. I am talking a little in the one I'm working on now!! It takes some getting used to though. 🌻
Excellent job done, as always - and again this cool T- shirt at 9:10! The one at 14:35 is nice as well. Like your glue addicted dog - ha ha ha! She's lovely. By the way: In the end the baby will reign from that throne very comfortably! ;) Greetings from Germany from teh silver fox, David 😉🦊
Yes, she is! I had planned to film a reaction but she tested positive for covid the day before I finished and I had to just leave it on her porch. She sent me a message later saying that she loved it.
That chair is very similar to the one I purchased for my first nephew in 1966. It got passed around to family members as new babies came along. You did a magnificent restoration, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.
RIGHT?? This is the actual cup I used as a kid! OH YEAH! Note - for those of you reading this under the age of 40, the cup is a vintage "Kool-Aid Man" cup from the 70s or 80s. I am so happy that someone else knows this! 🥰
@@Restorology I got mine from a family owned antique store. It was over 100 years old but they wanted it to go to someone that would use it, not just display it. I did, for 3 of my children. Sadly, we lost it in a house fire.
What a terrific job! Great work on those spindles too. And very ingenious with that strap. Nice to hear you talk and explain. Thank you! And those doggies are so cute. My father was a shoemaker and had the hide glue always at hand too, I remember our dog loving it! 😂❤👍
Thanks. This is my first time talking on camera and I was a little nervous doing it. I appreciate the nice feedback. I have to be super careful with glue around the one dog but my other dog could not care less about it. Weird. 🐶
For cracks similar to those on the food tray, but smaller, I have had massive success making my own 'filler' using wood dust from sanding and mixing it into a paste with wood glue. Also works really well to fill loose joints. In my experience it also takes stains and treatment pretty well. Great work as always! I never thought of running the drill backwards to clear out glue from holes, super cool tip. I also enjoy the fact that you showed your mistakes like the water marks, makes me feel better about the amount of mistakes I make haha
If I showed all my mistakes, it would be a video of its own. I've done the glue and wood dust thing too but sometimes I forget and make things more complicated! Thanks for the feedback!
@Restorology it turned out lovely! The only suggestion I would have is coat the hook with a product called tool magic. I use it to dip my pliers in to protect easily marked metal when I'm making jewellery. Simply dip the metal for a thin coat and allow to dry. That way skin doesn't get scratched. Thanks for speaking...it allowed me to focus on your great attention to detail instead of trying to read captions. Besides...you have a soothing voice...lol. I wish I could have seen the owner's reaction. I bet she was thrilled!
Thanks for the advice. I will check out the tool magic project. There are times I have to use pliers on brass or wooden parts and a protective coating would be ideal. I actually didn't get to see the owner's reaction. The day I finished this piece, she tested positive for covid so I had to just leave it on her front porch. She wrote to me that evening and told me that it was wonderful.
She seemed happy with it. She ended up testing positive for covid right before I finished so I had to leave it on her porch. I haven't actually seen her since. I hope it worked well for her.
@@Restorology im sure she is!! how sad she got covid esp when she was going to see him....hope she get better soon and loads up on her vitamins to strenghten her immune system great job over all!!!!
@@Restorology Yes, it was very clear, keep talking. Also, at 3:27 of the video, you can see somebody sneak off that noisy, stopped train and steal your zinc plates; I thought you should know.
I had a chair similar this one (but more Early American---had some side pieces that curved around) for my kids, then passed it on to the grandkids. But they said broke the tray somehow. The tray didn't have those pieces, mine had slides on the arms so you could adjust it. Good job restoring this one.
Thanks! I think that the slides started appearing in the 40s or 50s. I had trouble dating this one. The closest I found online were models from the 1920s but I am not convinced that this piece is that old. Maybe.
That looks fabulous! I recently picked one up in beautiful (well, for its age) condition. It's art deco - I can't wait to refinish it. Thanks for the video, beautiful work.
Thanks!! I actually have two more of these. I have the one I used as a child a thousand years ago and I recently found one on the side of the road in horrible condition. Both will make it to the channel one day.
Nice! My dad had the one he used when he was a toddler. It was in pieces. I dont know who in the family has it now. He always wanted to get it restored. I just didn't know how to do it, and was taking care of my brood of 5 kids back then and no internet to look things up!
Wow excellent work 👏 I wish you can do my grandson wooden chair, we bought him a high chair from Walmart and another one from target and both ended up not being safe and sturdy, they were returned. I bought him a solid wooden high chair from marketplace and it’s great, just needs some sanding and staining done. Thanks for your videos
Thanks!! Are you going to attempt to clean up the chair? It made a world of difference for this one. I'd be happy to help you with yours but the shipping cost will probably be prohibitive. Good luck with it!!
@@missirich902 I reckon once the finish is completely cured, it should be relatively safe for a child. I don't think that the tray is meant to serve in lieu of a plate if that is what you are asking though. I guess it can be cleaned with any household cleaner or simply a damp cloth.
I would say the high chair is just post WWII. I worked for a furniture maker post HS and before entry into the military. His advise was when removing or applying the finish to work from the bottom up and the inside out. You'll learn on the unseen sections how to remove the finish and what techniques work best in application Great job. Narragansett Bay
Looks good. You think it's from the 1960s. From what I found, most high chairs from that period were chrome. Not saying it couldn't be from the 60s, but I don't think it is. I have a similar project. It was my wife's grandmother's so it is well over 100 yrs old. I plan on doing the same thing you did. I'm sure your neighbor is happy.
Thanks! I actually think it might be much earlier than 60s. When in the video, I said 40 - 60 years, I forgot that 40 years ago is only the 1980s now! 😮 This may be almost 100 years old...or, it could be a good replication. Hard to tell honestly. My neighbor seemed super pleased with it. 🙂

@@Restorology that's unfortunate for her...hope she is better
Hermoso trabajo❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤un abrazo desde ciudad de Viña Del Mar Chile
¡Hola a Chile! ¡Gracias por sus amables palabras! 🌻
@@Restorology 👍👍👍😊👏👏👏👏👏😍🥰
wow i bet grammie will be busting with joy over this def worth passsing it down ;];];] great job!!!
@@pattylevasseur4041 Yeah I felt bad for her. She hasn't met him yet and he lives overseas in a country that is currently at war. It's tough for them.
@@Restorology ohh wow GOD LOVE THEM I SURE HOPE THEY CAN MAKE IT OVER HERE SAFELY!!!!
Very Nice
Thank you very much!!
really nice, thank you for sharing
You are welcome, thanks for the feedback.
Great job, as always, both on the restoration and the video production/editing/explanations.
Thanks!! It was my first time talking on camera! Did it sound okay?
@@Restorology Yes, it was very clear, keep talking.
Also, at 3:27 of the video, you can see somebody sneak off that noisy, stopped train and steal your zinc plates; I thought you should know.
@@condar419 You joke but I just recently looked back there and saw a group of young men breaking into a shipping container on the train. 😮
Maybe.
Mine was brand new gifted to me in the late 60s.
👍👍👍@@Restorology
Nice! My dad had the one he used when he was a toddler. It was in pieces. I dont know who in the family has it now. He always wanted to get it restored. I just didn't know how to do it, and was taking care of my brood of 5 kids back then and no internet to look things up!
Thanks! I also have the one my dad used, then I used, and then I used with my kids. It will make it to the channel one day!
How do you clean the tray? Can baby eat directly off the tray? The lacquer is food safe?
@@missirich902 I reckon once the finish is completely cured, it should be relatively safe for a child. I don't think that the tray is meant to serve in lieu of a plate if that is what you are asking though. I guess it can be cleaned with any household cleaner or simply a damp cloth.
Çok temiz iş 👍👍
Çok teşekkür ederim! ✌🏽
That's great advice. Thank you!!
Nice job! All you can get today are crummy plastic ones. 😠 The strap is genius!
Thanks! I hope the strap didn't look too redneck. It's all I had on hand. 🙂
