Lena's uncle is interesting to me. He's cold, he's dismissive, he's always warning Lena not to get attached to the 86. There's something in his voice and eyes though... I get the feeling he feels (or at least, used to feel) the same way that Lena does. But, he's practical. Numbers. I think he knows how much is hopeless - the chances of the country, the chance of beating the bureaucracy sending 86 to their deaths, all of it. I think he knows that when it comes to basic attrition numbers in warfare, the best chance of his nation's survival is to continue doing something he hates himself for, and believes that if he can be the monster that gives Lena the monstrous orders, he'll spare her some of the guilt.
I think he's someone who's chosen to be part of the problem because, first - it spares his family the responsibility of doing the same... and second, because that unforgiveable waste of lives remains the last best chance of a victory. I can't agree, but at least part of me understands.
WOW that's so interesting! I thought it was just a die hard republic view just for the nations sake but you can really see he knows what will happen is inevitable and Lena being someone he cares for is trying to prevent her from getting attached and ultimately let down just like her father was
I wouldn't be shocked if Lena made a report and it just got dismissed as nonsense. She doesn't have a shred of proof. Also Annette telling her their likely research method would be to bring Shin to district 1 and remove his brain, means she can't really push the issue.

Lena is progressively getting more smooth and understanding of how things work with those around her since episode 3, she is highly intelligent and adaptive and I think the anime doesn't really highlight it until further down episodes, at this point she's been making lots of minor reports and asking for small stuff from the higher ups to help the 86 but disguised as a highly efficient soldier/commander that only cares about her career, also shout out to Uncle Jerome who's such a complex and underrated character in the anime ❤
