Just adding a bit more for anyone who didn't know why it's called a 4th Wall Break:
In any visual performance/media (TV, Movies, Plays, comic illustrations etc.) the audience can only ever see 3 walls. The "4th wall" is what separates the audience from the characters. We can see through the wall, the characters can't. So by acknowledging that there is an audience, or that they are character, they break the wall.
If you are just hearing someone's thoughts, or it's a narrator, it's not a 4th wall break. Because it isn't technically within the walls to begin with.

They’re doing what’s called breaking the 4th wall”. In theater, you have backstage, stage left, and stage right, and each of those could be considered walls of a room, with the 4th wall being where the audience is.
Usually the actors perform as though all 4 walls are standing, and there is no audience. But “Breaking the 4th wall” is when the actors disregard there being an imaginary wall, and acknowledge or even talk to the audience.
    It’s normally comedic..

Deadpool is the most self aware character there is. In the comics he knows he is in a comic. In the movies therefore he is aware he is in a movie, who plays him, and the fact we are watching.
The comic character has a lot more going on, because unlike humans Wade’s brain cells regenerate and therefore his brain pattern re-wires itself. This makes him so self aware (and is written off as crazy), and this is why opponents like taskmaster (who can mimic anyone else’s fighting style) cannot beat him due to even Wade not being sure what he will do next.
But I digress. Deadpool is such a fascinating character, and a lot of the time is doing things to serve his own self interest which sometimes just happens to help others. And then at other times he can be so selfless it’s almost bizarre.
And then there is the voices. Originally representing the audience and the writer, a yellow text box and a white text box would argue with eachother and Wade. Which was then retconned into another marvel character living in his head… but that’s a whole other story!

13:30 -- RE: The 4th Wall and Deadpool; FYI, Deadpool was violating the 4th Wall in Comics too, before he went to film. The 4th Wall is a term borrowed from stage theater, it's called an Aside when the character speaks to the audience without letting on that it's all fake, sometimes to reveal what it is they're really thinking while saying something else to other characters.
Also, Deadpool is the only character who violates the 4th Wall; in the comics, this was meant to signal "This man is Crazy" and was often accompanied by us, the reader/Audience seeing hallucinations like the cartoon unicorn which only Deadpool can see. 4th Wall violations occur in other comics too, sometimes because the writers got a kick out of them for sarcastic purposes or current affairs. Reynolds did do well to consistently apply this trope throughout this series.

I love how, in this movie, they constantly talk to 'us the audience' which is just breaking the 4th wall again and again

  • @evanflynn4680
    @evanflynn4680 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Comic Deadpool was aware that he was a comic book character, so he constantly talked to the reader. The other characters just thought he was talking to himself, and it was part of Wade's "charm"
There would be more problems if he didn't break the 4th wall all the time.

Just so you’re more in the loop, the references Deadpool makes isn’t to let us know that this is a movie. It’s to let us know that Deadpool is omnipotent. That’s why he can talk about our world other movies etc. He knows he and everyone else in marvel is a comic character. He even know he’s being represented by Ryan reynolds in our world. Thats part of the reason he’s so comedic and seems to play a lot.

Hey, you know, Lord of the Rings, like "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", "The Return of the King", were BOOKS. You know that right.
Deadpool was a comic. Most of the Marvel Movies are based on comic books. I know it's tough, but really, a good google before seeing a movie would tell you this, and you know, you would know it's "dark" if you did that. Deadpool comics definition of Dark, so your surprise surprises me. Also, took you a minute to figure out DP was about to blow himself to smithereens not kill himself with that pop tart.

One of Deadpool's powers is he is aware he is in whatever medium he is in. He doesn't have direct power to change the story generally but occasionally can use that knowledge to his advantage. Because he is insane no one takes anything he says seriously and Deadpool doesn't take most things seriously so he doesn't go out of his way to explain the universe to the people in that universe.

Love your reactions. Now some facts. The writers aren't trying to prove that the movie is fake. Deadpool is insane and knows that he's a comic book character being played by Ryan Reynolds. Cable's name is Nathan Summers, future child of Cyclops and a clone of Jean Grey. The metal parts are the result of Cable being infected by a techno-organic virus by Apocalypse, with it partially taking over his body before it was stopped.

34:50 they did that in the Rocky films. They had Rocky point out stuff that seemed wrong. 39:02 it’s funny Ryan Reynolds said the reason they were able to show that scene was because that was 100% his body (making fun of his private area). 41:43 they showed Charles earlier when Deadpool was recovering in the mansion. His line “They can’t dust off one of the famous X-men” they show the the ones from the James McAvoy version in the background in an office. Those actors were doing “Dark Phoenix” and the director filmed a quick scene for the Deadpool director to add into his movie.

Deadpool is known to break the 4th wall, as in the screen to connect directly to the viewers. That's all the nods to reality that Deadpool makes. It's pretty popular in film and television, though I think Deadpool does it the most enjoyably with the references. The 4th wall implies that, like a TV, characters are surrounded by the left, right, and back of a television, but the 4th wall is the screen that Deadpool is breaking through.

    • @brucenatelee

He’s not like Thanos, HE IS THANOS, that’s the same actor, Josh Brolin, that’s the reason for those jokes. About juggernaut: at the comics he’s Charles Xavier’s brother, here at the movies there’s no reference to that at the X-Men movies, but obviously here at Deadpool they play and joke with that, but obviously can’t be taken seriously, since most of those references are just to make fun of it.

his thing with wolverine comes from the fact that ryan reynolds and hugh jackman (who has played wolverine for the past 20-25ish years) are friends, and they make fun of each other on twitter and other platforms. their "rivalry" (i can't think of a better term for it right now) has gone on for around a decade. it's like a never ending comedy roast.

It's probably been mentioned already, but I just have to add my two cents: Wade Wilson went totally bat-shit crazy in becoming Deadpool...Part of that madness was his understanding of reality and knowing that he's only a comic-book character...That's the reason he spends so much time talking to the audience...You'll notice none of the other characters do any such thing and believe that Deadpool doing so is just him being crazy...
