Thunderstorm approaching in the Congo jungle

  • Deep in the Congo Basin rainforest, a powerful thunderstorm is approaching. Piercing insect calls are interrupted by rolling thunder but this is not an idyllic landscape. The jungle is incredibly hot and humid. Flies and mosquitoes charge at any living being, sticking to the skin as they bite; snakes lie in the undergrowth; forest elephants and silverback gorillas patrol their territories.
    The soundscape is fascinating though and more than worth the long days of driving and hiking required to get here. Recorded with Sony PCM D100 in Ivindo National Park on a month-long field recording expedition to the rainforest in Gabon. Read the trip report here: mindful-audio.com/blog/2019/8...

    It is an excellent testimony, because this world is disappearing.
    I myself am a musician and do a lot of recordings in nature. Spending hours recording it and listening to it through headphones puts us in direct contact with his soul. It's fantastic. Well done.
    What is the frequency analyser you put under de picture?
    C'est un excellent témoignage, car ce monde est en train de disparaitre.
    Je suis moi-même musicien et fait beaucoup de prises de sons dans la nature. Le fait de passer des heures à l'enregistrer et à l'écouter au casque, nous met en relation directe avec son son âme. C'est fantastique. Bravo.

    This is so amazing, meditative, and immersive! Just curious, was this solely the PCM-D100 mics or you use other mics? Thought I saw you say luhd mics. if so which ones? This is amazing!

    • @GeorgeVlad
      @GeorgeVlad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Back then I was mostly recording with phantom power mics. Iin this case I used a pair of Luhd PM-01 binaural mics plugged into the D100, but they're not really something I'd recommend. For the same price you can get a pair of Lom mikroUsi or Clippy EM172 which will sound way better.

    Hi!, did u use some external mic connected to the D100 ? or something extra ? or it was recorded directly to the PCM ?

      Nope, this was recorded with the built-in mics.

  • @droidzhunterz6861

    What is the frequency response of the mics used here?

    • @GeorgeVlad
      @GeorgeVlad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The mics on the D100 pick up sound up to 70-80kHz but this was limited to 24kHz due to Nyquist theorem effects.

    • @droidzhunterz6861
      @droidzhunterz6861 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GeorgeVlad Too bad they don't go down to 20Hz for the full LFE effect from the thunder

    • @GeorgeVlad
      @GeorgeVlad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I have the MKH8020s for that, they will pair well with 32-bit recorders for loud sources like thunder.

    • @GeorgeVlad

      They're both great, the Loms are only slightly better (smaller size, better ultrasonic frequency response).
