Excellent review! I've got a pair of Frisco SD38-2s (296 & 297) that I plan on reviewing myself and from what I've seen, they look fantastic and this EJ&E unit is no exception as well, not to mention its dressed in all orange, my favorite color, lol! Hope you had an excellent Christmas and happy new year!
Good review as usual. I did notice for whatever reason that there are two "brake shoes" missing on the rear engineer side truck that would normally be there on triple clasp brake trucks.
To bad the sd38-2 was not built in larger numbers. It is just as good as it's brother the sd40-2. Also, I would love to see an sd40-2 painted in the same orange and silver color scheme as the EJ&e SD-38-2's. That would be awesome!!!
The light is a white LED and the outer lenses is RED, in person the light appears pretty red but there's some bleed with a pinkish red light. Overall I think it looks great and the way it ramps up and down to simulate oscillations is cool.
@SideTrackX did you ever see these at the 1:33 mark on this guy's channel? SOO the Milwaukee Road th-cam.com/video/c1GnoQ0b-WY/w-d-xo.html It's 4 led's together.
I would have to say that the overall fidelity of the model looks great. It is the paint and assembly that kills it. Absolutely lousy. The paint is to thick which causes a bad fit for parts. Case in point is the cab. The coupler lift bar has its lifting mechanism upside down. Brake cylinders are assembled Kooky. The massive casting plates on the side frames are really lame. The orange color looks to be a little to creamy, but that could be due to the camera here. The handrails and stanchions on this model look OK. There are a few stanchions that lean in. Overall though the stanchions and handrails look OK. The sound is TERRIBLE, but that could be due to the TH-cam recording. I think this would be a great model as an unassembled/undecorated model for those that like to assemble and paint their own models. We modelers could then clean up all the sprue boogers and assemble the model much better than their Chinese assemblers. I would rate this model a 6 out of 10.
Another nice thing comes to an end. To bad the EJ &E colors disappeared under the CN color scheme. The CN colors are just plain ugly. Shame on the CN for ruining another sacred traditional American railroad.
EJ&E!!!❤

I'm looking forward to future roadname releases like B&LE and DM&IR,i'm surprised that they were not part of the initial roadnames for the SD38-2!
Looks like a great loco.
Nice model,, just wish they put LEDs in for the platform lights..
Yea that would have been nice, I can only imagine they ran out of space/dcc function availability.
Super beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
What color is the rotary beacon?
Hard to tell on the video.
On the prototype, in that era, they were red.

They really did mess them up didn't they, the color is way out
For $300 you shouldn't have to fix anything on it.
