    The Dallas-Fort Worth area had some of the hottest temps in the US this week per news article. Lots of my seedlings 🌱 died or simply didn't sprout. Lots of luck to anyone planting, especially those with peach orchards in Georgia USA.
    🎉 I cried but we can always start over. Again, good luck everywhere. Planting turnip greens inside this weekend.
    Thnx for helping me sort out seeds for fall planting, Mr. Ric 😉

    I'm in Sylacauga Alabama, one 7B. It is extremally hot right now. I am in the process of getting three of my raised beds ready for planting. I just harvested out my Yod Fah, and need to harvest and cut back my New Zealand spinach again. It grows crazy fast in the summer heat. After the fourth, I will be sowing seeds for carrots, cabbage, turnips, and rutabagas. In August, I will be planting a fall crop of potatoes, Golden Beets, Pak Choi, a new crop of Yod Fah, Kohlrabi, Komatsuna, Yellow Heart Winter Choy, and Peas. I have enough Swiss Chard, Chijimisai, Beet Greens, Tatsoi, and spinach preserved to last until next spring. I am harvesting pole beans, cucumbers, squash, onions, peppers, and tomatoes daily. My Seascape Strawberries are flowering and fruiting again. I'll probably do more planting closer to fall, and I want to grow hot house tomatoes this winter.

    Best part is starting them outside in the elements, protected from large pests but acclimated to real life.

      It's way to hot outside in our area to start brassicas. I'd have to water them 3 times a day and they would bolt to seed before I ever got a chance to plant them.

    What about carrots there are 66 harvest days. But they are cold weather crops but we are organic farmers (138 acres) but retired now 🎉 I never thought of growing out of season but your right I really guess I could. Look 😮 at You teaching an old fart like me something New.
    I like it. 😅❤

      For me I wait just a little longer with carrots. Also carrots don't really transplant well so I would just hold off on those and get them direct sown around 6-8 weeks before your first frost.

    Zone 7b, can we plant brassica outdoors in July for a fall harvest

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty hot in July for planting brassicas outside. You could plant kale and collards, the rest would rather be inside where it is cooler.

    The zones don't seem to work anymore, im in NJ and we are still in summer clothes in October.

      For this planting we are more concerned with your first fall frost date than we are your garden zone.

    Hello Rick, I live in France, zone 8A-ish. I would like to start the seedlings outside in a plastic greenhouse. I've put away all my lighting for the summer. Can I do that? Again thank you for your great videos.

      The biggest concer for that will be temperature. Cool season crops like growing in cooler temps, so they are not going to thrive outdoors in a warm green house this time of year.

    I'm surprised that you didn't mention spinach.

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's way too early for spinach. If you start it now it will need to go out when it's hot and then it will bolt. I direct seed spinach about 6 to 8 weeks before my first frost.

      It’s too early for spinach. Don’t start it now.

    How many hours of light should you use on your seedlings?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      With shop lights the light should be really close (like 1-2 inches) and you should leave them on 14-16 hours a day.

    Hi Rick or anyone else that may have an opinion. For cold season cropping,why would I have to start seeds indoors under lights? I was thinking of starting them outdoors under 40 % shade fabric. Would that work? Zone 5 here

    • @wisdomseekers479
      @wisdomseekers479 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking same. There's plenty Sun, thinking need a bit of shade from elements

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with outdoors and brassicas is the heat, even under shade cloth they would bolt for me. Plus we have huge pest issues that I would have to deal with. If you try this let me know how it goes.

    I'm curious, what is a good temp to keep the room the seedlings are in, at?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything below 80 will be fine, but 70 ish would be even better if you keep your house that cold. We keep ours at 74 and they so great.

    Can I doy starts in a covered high tunnel, instead of in the house?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with that is these are all cool season crops, they are not going to thrive in a warm tunnel like that. That is why I start mine inside because it's cooler.

      @@StoneyAcresGardening out home is not air conditioned. Not unusual for it to be 90*+ inside when we get off work at about dark. Hot and miserable. Till the fans do some ventilating. So I am stumped!

      @@lpmoron6258if you have a basement it's probably cooler down there, you will need grow lights or natural light. Or maybe get creative and try using a gel filled ice pack under the seedling tray.

    Can I grow seedlings outside in shade?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good question. Unfortunately, the answer is no. Seedlings will need more light and cooler temps to do well because they are all cool-season plants. Sorry.
