  • This is one long continuous take of me hollowing out one of the small kiln-dried cherry bowls from my Elegant Americana series. Nothing has been edited out or cut (other than if I didn't get back in to the exact same position after moving the camera), so this is as close as it gets to actually hanging out in the wood studio with me while I work! I turn as many as fifteen of these little bowls a week during production runs.
When I hollow, I like to leave mass in the middle of the bowl while I work on the side walls and rim and this helps keep the rim of the bowl from flexing and vibrating.
I use 3/8" (1/2" diameter bar stock) Crown bowl gouges with a swept back Ellsworth/Irish grind for 90% of my work. I usually have three sharpened to the exact same profile and switch off as needed so I don't have to pause to sharpen. The parabolic flute shape of the Crown (and Henry Taylor and Hamlet have this shape also) is by far the best shape for a bowl gouge flute!
