Three keys to make a good tenon for holding bowls and vessels in the chuck while woodturning.
In this video, I will go over the three keys for creating a well-formed tenon that will hold your bowl, vessel, or other woodturning project firmly in the chuck while you are hollowing.
The three keys are (in order of importance):
1. The top of the jaws must have a nice flat bearing surface (shoulder) to ride against. The majority of your holding power comes from paying attention to this detail.
2. The diameter of the tenon must match the chuck jaws, do not try to get away with just having one set of jaws and putting in a tenon that is way too big for the jaws (Or using a tenon that is the correct size for the jaws but way too small relative to the workpiece). Long story short, you will eventually need multiple sets of jaws. The jaws are a true circle when they are just slightly open (a 1/16" - 3/32" gap between jaws) and this is the diameter at which they will have the greatest holding power because the entire surface of the jaws will be making contact.
3. Matching the dovetail (or other) shape of the jaws.
Pay attention to these concepts and take the time to make your tenons correctly and bowls that fly out of the chuck will be a thing of the past for you!

Woodshop shorts: Turning components for patio chairs, duplication by hand from a scale drawing
Here's a real time video of turning one of the pieces of an interesting little job I had today to make wooden replacements for some plastic components that had rotted out in my client's patio chairs. (There are a couple photos of the halves of the chair showing how the components will hold them together at the end of the video). I had drilled the 1" hole through the workpiece already, then moun...
Inspiration and design in modern wood art (The making of Ripples episode 2)
In spring and summer 2020, I created a new series of wall hanging wood sculptures with turned elements that I call the Ripples series. The theme of Ripples is a reference to a quote that goes something along the lines of: "The work of a teacher is like a drop of water in a pond; the ripples go on forever" Without taking anything away from teachers (I know I have many that I owe a tremendous deb...
Carving in the park (The making of Ripples episode 1)
In June and July 2020, I made a new series of wall hangings with turned elements called "Ripples" for a paired solo exhibition at Valkarie Gallery in Lakewood Colorado along with the talented AK Westerman of AK Organic Abstracts. www.akorganicabstracts.com/ This video is a snapshot of one day in the process of creating these new wall hanging sculptures. In the weeks leading up to the completion...
Get a grip! How to turn your own custom handles for bowl gouges and other woodturning tools.
I often find that the handle supplied by the manufacturer on a bowl gouge is too short for my liking, so in this video I show you how easy it is to remove the gouge from the existing handle, and turn a custom one that better suits your needs. You can customize everything from the length, to the grip thickness, to the color of the wood and the ferrule, and I've found that a thicker grip than the...
Using green wood in woodturning: Part 1- Cutting the log in to blanks, rough turning, and drying
From logs to lumber, trees to tableware, if you're not using green wood you should be! This video shows my complete process for using fresh-cut or "green" wood in log form for woodturning my bowls. Turning green wood is one of the most fun things you can do on a lathe- the wood fibers are still wet and yield easily to your sharp tools. Plus, the material can often be had for free or just firewo...

Woodturning- Real time production bowl turning
This is one long continuous take of me hollowing out one of the small kiln-dried cherry bowls from my Elegant Americana series. Nothing has been edited out or cut (other than if I didn't get back in to the exact same position after moving the camera), so this is as close as it gets to actually hanging out in the wood studio with me while I work! I turn as many as fifteen of these little bowls a...
Woodturning: Finishing the bottom of a bowl without a vacuum chuck or cole jaws. Cheap and simple!
No vacuum chuck? No problem! In this video designed with beginning woodturners in mind, I give a complete explanation while I share my simple and cheap low-tech method for finishing the bottom of all of my bowls using just a shop made jam chuck (or jamb chuck) and some craft foam. This method is an effective way of removing your tenon or screw holes to remove all evidence of the mounting method...
Woodturning a bowl with an ogee curve (Blue Rim Bowls Series) Part I - Outside
Detailed video of my turning process on the outside of a bowl. I start all of my smaller, kiln dried bowls between centers. This method is quite secure and there is no need to use a screw chuck on a small bowl like this. If your lathe has a reverse feature, use it when you power sand. (You'll see me switch back and forth in the last few minutes). I typically choose one or two grits out of the s...
15" Cottonwood Bowl. Green wood rough turning.
Rough turning of a green cottonwood blank from a tree that had to come down because of old age and storm damage and was destined for the landfill. After this rough turning stage, the blank will be coated with wax-based green wood end sealer and set aside to dry for between six months and to year prior to final turning.

I use One Way chucks and whatever diameter I have for the tenon works fine, I make it my way and it works fine. You and all the others that waste their time trying to figure out the correct diameter, buy a good set of jaws and you won't have to worry about this minor thing.

When trimming the log to line final blanks, I use 1” or 2” painters tape and I use the edge of the tape for my guide. It is easy to mark and adjust the line of cut.

I find that the standard wood handles aren't heavy enough. To me, the heavier the handle (to a point) the less the wood will shove the tool around so I don't have to use a gorilla grip (using physics instead of brute force). Is there a way to weight the handle or a different material to use to make them heavier?

Could you use a tubing cutter of appropriate size instead of using a hack saw to cut the ferrel to length? Enjoyed the video. I think I would have sanded and put a finish on it , and a couple of burn rings also. I liked the content flow of your video and the step by step process. Like how you redid the ferrel to get what you wanted with out having to use epoxy. did you stake the ferrel after it was in place? Any chance of another video showing the install on a square tange tool, like the skew or roughing gouge?

    • @studiocsh
      @studiocsh ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Greg, yes in fact that is what I have switched to doing (using a tubing cutter) since the time of this video. You do have to buy a special cutter for it for stainless if you are using that as your ferrule material. Glad you enjoyed the video. I hope to get back to making more soon and will keep in mind the idea of making a square tang tool handle video.

Good video, thanks. I note that Crown Tools, in advertising their dovetail scraper, states that "Tests have shown that as much as 50% of a collet chuck's gripping power is lost if the dovetail angle is out by as little as 5°." This might just be an effort to sell their scraper, but even if the point is true, I think that it is not difficult to eyeball the angle within 5º, so it is likely to be accurate enough to do it without any special tools or measurements.
