I relate so much to this. As a Sarawakian who goes to public school, my parents taught me English since I was young. It's frustrating when people just assume that I'm some fake Malaysian wannabe western girl just because I speak English with a slight American accent (I was influenced by Totally Spies and Powerpuffgirls).
They ridiculed me for not speaking my mother tongue and that goes as far as accusing me of not knowing how to speak Bahasa Melayu. Like Hello! Kamu ingat saya meluangkan masa persekolahan saya selama 12 tahun dalam kelas Bahasa Melayu untuk belajar Bahasa Portugis! Belik amai (Soooo stupid). Funny thing is, I'm Iban so my mother tongue is The Iban Language not bm.
OMG I so relate I am now in a public Malaysia school but I speak English with my family at home and have spoken it all my life in my old school (mostly Chinese and non-locals) so I thought English was normal.
They always assumed I can't speak Malay! Narrow-minded people like that really irritate me.
I am a Sarawakian growing up speaking English at home! I thought it was normal until I talked to a classmate in a Semenanjung uni and he sounded like he wasn't used to it

Jessica Chenera I went through the same situation! I was talking to my friend in english and someone behind yelled "Kitak xpat kelakar melayu ka pa?!" like dude chill just because i speak english all the time does not mean i am incapable of our national language

Di sini, Indonesia, pun, kasusnya juga mirip.. Orang-orang yang mencoba berbahasa Inggris sering diolok-olok oleh teman-teman mereka.. Saya pikir orang Malaysia lebih "open-minded" about using the English language, tapi saya pikir saya salah, hehe..
Anyway, saya harap baik orang Indonesia dan Malaysia lebih terbuka dengan orang yang mencoba untuk berbicara dalam Bahasa Inggris..

Bro..What you've said about English language is absolutely true. During the 90's, I loved listening to Brit music and reading magazines on the Brit music scenes. Indirectly, it had built up my interest on the language and culture of the Brits. When I did my post graduate degree in Liverpool in the late 90's, I noticed that I can blend in easily.

I hate when people assume I'm being fake just because I speak with an accent. I grew up speaking only English at home. Also I attended private school and I have stopped using the word lah and so on, even with friends. I actually love the English language.

Great video! If people said 'minta puji', just smile and say 'Thank you for the compliment. I've been practicing English a lot lately and you're the first one to notice!' Then, you hug them and they'll be awkward. That's how you fight 'em back. Replying negativism with positivity.

I have struggles in imprving my english bcause everytime i tried to speak english people said i dont love indonesia n just tried to show offs.. they said im in indonesia n should speak bahasa not english which is really frustrated.

I live and work in UK 🇬🇧for more then 25 years,I could understand if you want to speak English in your country with orang dusun or melayu,of course tidak sesuai lah,defending the keadaan.I strongly agree what you trying to say,we should never embarrass to speak English to improve your English 👍👌

Awesome video. I actually have a slight accent when I speak in english. It sounded like british sometimes but my friends told me that its okay to speak in british accent, and my muet lecturer also encourage us to speak with an accent. so, I think people who tend to speak english with an accent are very good.

i can speak more than one language. etc : Chinese (Mandarin), Iban (Native), Melayu, and english. My english is not tgat damn good but my friends always correct me and i just accept it as an encouragement for me to improve my english. biasalah bah tu kalo speaking broken english.
