    Since the processor and sensor are identical, I would have preferred OM System made an announcement at the factory of the rebranding with the new firmware, and made the updated firmware available to existing OM-1 owners as a paid upgrade/update. This way existing OM-1 owners can choose if they want to pay for these feature enhancements withing buying an entire new camera.

      @akeluify 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I'd rather they keep the new model as is and offer all the features that can be brought over in software in a new firmware. There is apparently a V2 firmware coming for om-1 this year with new features not just bug fixes according to rumours so it may still happen.

      They upgraded the hardware to make the new firmware possible. I doubt the new firmware could be made to run on the old hardware.

      I am not sure the other features could be done without a new memory chip that OM-1 Mark II has. If I understood correctly the LiveGND needs that. The buffer size needs that too. I do not if the improved Human Detection could be updated via firmware to OM-1.

    • @dcd
      @dcd 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@ForsgardPeterdo we know for sure it has a new memory chip? At this point, it seems they could have just opened up more memory that was already there to use for the buffer. Maybe the previous firmware was not optimized to use it until now. Given the same sensor and processor, I would not be surprised if it was not the exact same body, they just had to remove the Olympus name as the agreement to use it has run out.

    Thank you Peter for sharing your thoughts regarding the positioning and strategy (supposed or perceived) of OM-System.
    For my part, I'm not even going to consider the option of replacing my 8 month old OM1; on the other hand I would have liked to see a PEN-F mark 2.

    • @michaeld5888
      @michaeld5888 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Olympus struggled to sell the Pen F in the glory days. Even Fuji seem to have dropped their range finder style cameras. Sony sell them but then do not do a DSLR style in aps-c. The rule seems to be that multiple body styles are not viable in these current thin markets and putting the EVF on the corner or the top is a big divergence of design and they have to go for one or the other. Olympus just exclude the EVF which is the alternative in the EPL line but I just could not use mine outdoors in bright sun.

    My OM-1 is two years old and I love it and it served me well. The new OM-1 MkII is a nice evolutionary improvement and has numerous slight improvements. Enough improvements that I am pre-ordering it.
    The new 150-600/f5.0-6.3 lens looks good but I already own the 150-400/4.5 lens.

      Don't second guess already owning150-400pro lens over the 150-600. They will probably be miles apart in handling. Since I own similar type lenses like the Panasonic/Leica 100-400 f5.0-6.3 and the Oly 150-400 pro. I have missed so many shots using the P/L lens because I have to rack focal length over 360 degrees while the Oly lens is only a quarter of a turn, the weight is a big factor in handholding especially when you are waiting for your subject to move or fly off its perch, that extra f-stop makes a world of difference in low light conditions, the 200mm of extra focal length is not a huge factor (since that is the difference between the 2 lenses I own) and lastly, you don't want a lens that the barrel extends in rainy or wet conditions, I find myself wiping down the extended barrel all the time, even if OM systems says the sigma copy is water tight, I'm sure the life expectance will be shorter than the Oly. Your white lens will last forever unless the drop it. I love OM systems gear and support with all their instructional videos on TH-cam, but for now, I will stay put not upgrading my OM1, since there is no proven improvement for wildlife video or buying new glass since all my lenses are pro versions. If you are planning to use the OMII for other genre i.e. landscape, macro photography than yes major improvements are in place for an upgrade. Hope you enjoy your new kit.

      OM Systems has done zero R&D since they bought Olympus’s cameras division. They ran out of new things that were sitting on the workbench from the Olympus days after they released the 90mm macro. Note they’ve got nothing, so they’ll slowly go on stamping new names on old products and then raising the price, for a few years until everyone realizes that its a brand that will never add anything else new to the lineup. I’m happy with my OM-1 but I’m content with the fact that it’s the end of the line.

    Always good to hear your opinion, thanks Peter. The new OM1-II feature I like best is the graduated ND filter, I use square filters with my Fujifilm and it takes time setting up the lens adapter, holder and filter. The new nd grad means more time to spend on composition, definitely a good thing for landscapes and cityscapes. I think Olympus/OMS are really good for software features, especially Livecomp, good to see more innovation.

    Thanks for the plug Peter. I can't agreed on OM should really put more effort into videos, if they did, there will be a whole bunch of new comers. On the topic of human tracking. this is now different. You still have the face and eye option in the menu, but in addition, there's human that recognises the body. However, one thing I didn't mention is that other recognition modes will highlight the body of the subject, bird, car or plane, then another box highlighting the eye. Human recognition doesn't highlight the body, but it does... just invisibly. They should have made it like others so you know the camera is tracking the body too. But I guess, it will make the screen rather busy. Something I will feed that back to OM and hope they can improve it via firmware later. The GND feature is awesome, especially for travel photographers and landscape guys. Live ND also now goes to 7EV, another stop more too. IBIS has 0.5 stop improvement, brings it in line with G9 II, though we are reaching the realm of not noticing such improvement because it's already crazy stable. Anyway, good video and glad to hear your opinions as always buddy.

    only gripe with OM System cameras is the now oddly high price for the features you get. and the MkII is at (to me) an eyewatering £2200 for the body alone. and still on many retailers the price of the first OM1 is still nearing £2000. the additions and changes seem minimal, but the price shouldnt be this high if OM System wants to stay in the game because their OM5 is still lacking a few things that many cameras now have. even the GH5ii is a mid-range/high end hybrid with animal detection and you can get it under £1000.
    i feel to compete OM System needs to add more to their lines, or drop the price until its competitively attractive while being cooperative with Lumix M43rds. thats just my 2 cents/pence.

      The strategy of OM System is not for growing their marketshare but to become provitable and not a money losing organization during Olympus days which no one’s wants. Be aware that Nikon is also focusing on cash flow and higher profitability by only releasing high priced camera as Z8 and Z9 costing above €4000. Nikon is not even interested in the sub €2000 market and even the APS-C cameras like D500 was discontinued without any replacement. Canon is restricting third party lenses to the R mount with the same reason increasing revenue. Canon first party R mount lenses are 30% highervthen equivalent EF lenses. So Canon is also working on higher profitability.
      Only Panasonic, Sony and Fuji are focussing on a strategy to get marketshare from the others.

Happy with the purchase, luckily, I kept the P/L 100-400 native lens for Dual Stab and Boost I.S. for rock steady CAF video. Tracking of subject is huge over the OM1. But I still love my OM1 for stills especially with the native pro glass that I own. I just finished watching an OM System into interactive on-line meeting about the OM-1 Mk II and the 150-600mm lens. The Mk II has many new upgrades made possible by physical increases in the system memory, image buffer, and new IBIS hardware. The memory upgrade was required to add the new features, and in some cases does improve processing speeds. Like Peter says here, the Live GND is just brilliant! The IBIS is 1.5 stops better than the OM-1! There are now 12.5 and 16.75 fps high speed shot options, which I think are great and much more practical. The bird tracking AF has been improved (although no demonstration of that today). The Live ND has one more stop of filtering. All in all, this is a very significant upgrade to a ground breaking camera just two years into it's market life. I do not see all these other cameras some say have caught up to the OM-1. Some for some features, perhaps, but overall, even the original OM-1 is still market leading when taken as a whole. Better is better, and overall the Mk II is a much better camera - for many people - than the original. I bought my OM-1 as a pre-release when it was announced and will be keeping it for now, but for those who can use the new features, and especially for those who do not have an OM-1 this new model is a no-brainer upgrade.

    "Faster than never." Love it! Thank you for sharing your impressions. I concur with all you said. Now for my thoughts.
    I am very interested in the 150-600 lens. I'm a wildlife photographer and own the 100-400 now. For me, 400 mm is often not enough. I have the MC 14 extender, but that degrades the image too much. So, I'm very interested in having a lens that goes to 600 mm. I will defintely try it out if I can get my hands on one. I will reserve judgment on the lens until then. One of my complaints with the 100-400 is that it lacks sync-IS. The 150-600 has that, so that is a plus. The fact that the lens is made by Sigma, if it is, does not bother me.
    I have an OM-1 that's about 6 months old, so I'm not interested in upgrading the camera just yet.
    The 9-18 lens is not something I need.

    Great video and thanks for sharing your thoughts.I am buying a Panny GH9II instead of an OM due to the video features. I always felt Fuji was way behind on auto focus but the last Fuji I had was the XT2. Maybe that changed.

    • @Linealo
      @Linealo 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That changed a lot. The XT3 improved a lot already, especially after a slimmed down version of the AF system from the XT4 trickled down with updates. With the XH2/XT5 they then fully rewrite the AF algorithm, making it on par or better than the systems that were the first to "break the ice", like the Sony A7iii.
      Fuji now has a very capable autofocus, comparable to the current first generation Phase-AF that Lumix has introduced with the S5II and then brought to the G9ii.
      If AF is the deciding factor between a Lumix or a Fuji, the answer would be a toss-up. Both work differently, but good and correctly in their own right, yet still perform not as reliant as the AF systems in the Canon R5/R8/R7/R3, Sony A7rV/A1/A9iii/A7cii or Nikon Z9/Z8. Those are all also the latest and mostly highest end though, but something more comparable like the R8/R7 or A7IV/A7cii will still give them trouble and may come out ahead.

    I think this is one of the most reasonable responses I've seen to these announcements. One thing that I don't think that many camera people seem to get is that the premium models earn their investment back not by the handful of people who buy the latest premium model but by the countless others who are quietly influenced to buy lower in the product range because they see that a premium model exists. It's about confidence in the brand, not about the salability of the premium model.

    Thanks Peter…it seems like a great camera, but like the OM1 more focused on photography with a certain niche. It is a revolutionary upgrade? No, but incremental improvements are fine. Would you upgrade from an OM1..my guess is for most people the answer is no…but this is common amongst many brands; most cameras more than meet most people needs today. If a paid firmware upgrade could do it might be the better solution, but uncertain if that would work. It appears that for most basic video usage it would work well, but it’s not the video centric camera that the G9ii is, so G9ii the better choice if video key. For outdoor adventure photography OM1 or OM1ii still seems to be one of the best for the price. I do wish it was smaller and lighter, but I say that all the time about MFT these days. My soapbox speech I guess. BTW: I liked the style of this video; casual, leaning comfortably and no exaggerated comments.

    Interesting thoughts and have seen a bunch of other YT vids on the MK II. Was looking at maybe moving from MFT to Sony which would be a big leap. Was not impressed with the OM1 Mk I because of the auto focus issues. The Mk II seems to have fixed this. Need something small and simple with better and quieter autofocus. As OM have to rebrand their existing line to OM Systems it's an ideal time to just change the servo's and get it out there.

    I'm afraid I will have to take issue with your assessment, Peter, of the 150-600mm Sigma lens for OM. It's a full frame designed lens...somewhat retrofitted for M4/3. That suggests it was not designed for M4/3 and is therefore a compromise. Certainly, it's heavier than it has to be. In addition, it's big. Well...actually, not that bad if what you want is a full frame zoom of that range for a FF camera. But for m4/3's? It's a monster for that usage. And a fair portion of that size is to accommodate the FF sensor...which OM cameras don't have. Third, you mention the MC-20. I have two copies of that teleconverter. One I use on my 40-150mm f2.8 pro lens. It works great. I prefer it to the MC-14. The other MC-20 goes on my 300 f4 pro. Another great combination. I use it more than with the MC-14 I have. What I do use my MC-14 on is my 100-400mm Olympus lens. It does well there, probably because the MC-14 only increases the aperture by one f stop. However, using the MC-20 on the 100-400mm...I've tried and it flopped. I know it's not my particular MC-20's. They work great on my pro lenses. But on the 100-400mm...not so much. The MC-20 gives me no better resolution than the MC-14 and cropping. And you lose a stop of light. Now that's a bad trade. So, I expect that this 150-600mm monstrosity with the same aperture wide open at the long end of 6.3 will not work any better with the MC-20. With the MC-20, the aperture wide open at the long end is f/13. For m4/3, diffraction gets bad above f/11. Some suggest you don't go above f8. I can live with f/11, so I will use that, but f/13? Bad idea.
    So, there you go. As much as I would like the extra reach, let me suggest you get what you pay for. If I absolutely had to have more reach than I get with my 300mm pro and MC-20, I'd have to bite the very hard bullet and get the 150-400mm f/4.5 Pro.lens. Yeah, it's costly, but you get what you pay for. And I will note that the Sigma Sport lens for Sony/Leica or Canon that the new 150-600mm seems modeled after sell for $1500-1700. This new lens is listed for $2700. NO SALE.

      @@ForsgardPeter The X100 was already very popular before the TikTok rage, but indeed that rage made it even worse. Now street photography being so popular, OM Systems could benefit with a cool PEN-F MkII. I guess the MkI was a bit too early, to catch the true retro-hype.
      A pseudo rangefinder style camera will never reach the quantities of a conventional DSLR-style model (except for Leica), but the target group is very consistent and loyal. The X-E has become very popular the last 2 years. Pre-owned they are close to new price nowadays. The X-E4 even sells for higher than new prices. Just like the X100V.
      Fuji has a huge supply chain issue. Ever since COVID-19 they haven’t been able to solve their logistics issue and they’re still facing problems. That’s why they silently ‘discontinued’ many models without successors. The new X100 is scheduled for early this year and rumor goes that the new X-Pro will come towards end of 2024 or early 2025, which is a year late compared to the original schedule (every 4 years). The X-Pro1 and 2 were great hits for Fuji, but the 3 lagged behind. Largely due to the price and strange design decision re. the LCD screen. Hardcore fans upgraded to the 3, but the larger part of the X-Pro2 users sticked to their 2. Even today, pre-owned X-Pro2s in very good to excellent condition, are hard to come by. However, it kind of seems like they did a minor upgrade but had to change the name from Olympus to OM System on the camera, and decided to issue a new camera with some new features...and not upgrade the owners of the OM-1. If I was an OM-1 owner, I would not be happy about that. However, the last model I bought was the EM1X. It still works fine. What it doesn't do is follow subjects with tracking autofocus very well. If the new OM-1ii had that capability...really, really sticky even for quick darting subjects, then I would be interested. And that is what has me interested in the Sony A9III. I think you mean graduated ND, and that is a slick tool. Clearly, the OM-1 II is a great camera, but not enough to make me switch from what for me is superior Lumix ergo (although I do wish they'd put the 5.76MP EVF on the G9 II).
    I'm surprised that a long-time MFT user wouldn't go with Lumix for video, rather than moving to a somewhat larger (although less versatile) sensor. But then, I'm not a videographer.

    Thanks Peter, that came across as quite well reasoned and it is good to hear someone apply good business sense to challenges faced by the companies competing in this now declining market. They have to make a profit, else they will go away. We can only expect to see reduced R&D budgets and decisions need to be made around where to invest their effort and resources. I would be all for them standardising the camera body designs to save money (as they did with EM5 iii and OM-5 having the same body, why not, the ergonomics are pretty well sorted) and then improving the features and performance as technology allows, as with your suggestion for improved video. I am also wondering if they could look at firmware updates that add features to existing cameras and charge for the updates (as opposed to just bug fixes, which of course should be free). How about facilitating hardware upgrades on the machines themselves, for example when you buy a computer, you can choose what sort of processor or how much RAM, which graphics card etc. Then release the same camera with different levels of specification to suit individual needs. I know it maybe not so easy, as they are all 10lbs of stuff in a 5lb box and there is cooling and so forth to think about.

    With bodies now about the same size as the smaller FF like Panasonic recent cameras and now using lenses from FF a lot of people may say why not just use FF if you are into birding etc.
    The question is are they killing their future market? If you were a FF user would you drop down a sensor size to possibly use the same lens on a small sensor?
    Now I know there are also smaller lenses and I own those, and being an existing Mu-43 user will not swap soon. But if you were using another system would you change to Mu-43?

    The OM-1 Mark II in the US is just $100 cheaper than the Fuji X-H2s. Both have stacked sensors. The Fuji not only has a bigger sensor with higher resolution, but also faster readout (1/120 vs 1/180). And the Fuji does video much better.
    And some people wonder why I think an EM1MKII class body size with as much as they can pack in it would be something the competition couldn't touch even if they have to price that high like $1800-$2200 USD.

    Hey Peter, thanks for that video and your opinion but I don't agree with your thoughts about the 150-600 lens. It's good to use the R&D from other companies to minimize investment, also this is a good quality lens so this is a good step. My problem is that it's the full frame size, they didn't use only the existing optical scheme but to make it smaller and lighter just to cover the m4/3 image circle. We can speculate here that this change will be like producing a completely different lens, investing in new machines and new lens elements for the smaller sensor. That's a possible theory, maybe this was the easiest solution, to use the existing full frame lens, just to change the lens mount and with some small internal changes of protocols and algorithms. I'm ok also with this, but I'm not OK with the double price compared with the full frame price. This is absolute mockery - it's like OM System saying... oh there is no native lens with 1200mm equivalent reach and we are advertising the system like a bird/wildlife system so we can charge twice the money without doing everything and the stupid photographers will pay. I don't accept that! This lens should be priced at $999 to be successful and to sell more of it or if they did it the other way to change it and reduce the size and weight with the current lens design probably they can sell it for $1500. Now in this situation if you want this reach go and buy the Canon EF version of the lens with a converter and use it on your m4/3 camera. The price will be way less than $1000.

    I don't think the concern is that the 150-600 is a rebadged sigma, and I suspect that any truly new lenses from OMS will indeed need to be rebadged or collaborations with brands like sigma - instead I think the concern is that it's a full-frame lens that isn't optimized for MFT

  • @pault151
    @pault151 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Peter, you mentioned OM System's "massive" lens selection. The 150-600mm lens certainly fits that definition. The OM-1 with this lens is comparable to or heavier than many APS-C and even FF cameras with their long zooms attached. So the only benefit of the new lens is to give people who do not want to change cameras, an ultra-zoom option that is less expensive than the 150-400. This new lens is still quite expensive, and I am still waiting to see actual performance tests on it, but for a non-professional who does not use it to generate income it is probably too expensive, and for those who like M4/3 because of the size and lightness it is also not a win.
    I think that the only thing that could really make it compelling would be a speed booster to use all of that glass to gather more light instead of relying on the crop to boost effective zoom while losing light.

    Thank you for weighing in on this Peter. I watched Jimmy's video, and I was really confused by it, as it came across as an ad for OM Systems, and not a review. That surprised me, because I have been enjoying his content for years, but that video of his hit wrong.
    I think OM Systems needs to do a little more than merely play the refresh & rebrand game to gain consumer trust again. These efforts seem like token gestures, almost like a band releasing a "greatest hits" album to fulfill a contractual obligation.
    The OM1.2 seems like a very mild refresh to me, and everything about it (except the doubled buffer size) could have been taken care of with a firmware update, right? Let's face it, while the OM-1.2 is a very decent camera, its bones are over two years old now. As for the lenses, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't repurposing a FF lens completely destroying the portability argument of MFT? I get that it was purely a financial decision, but still, that seems like a misstep to me; where that zoom built from the ground up for MFT, wouldn't it have been far more compact, and perhaps even lighter, but match specs and quality? I was also quite surprised that the re-badged OM version of the lens costs considerably more than the Sigma FF version. Very strange to me. The other two lenses seem like, again, very subtle refreshes, and re-brands, and not much more.

    Out of Olympus, they released a rebranded Sigma lens 150-600mm, it's don't have the "olympus look" but looks more like the normal Sigma lens with an EF-M43 adapter glued on it, a 9-18mm mkII exactly the same as the mkI still with the f*** lock button, and now this OM1mkII that is just a OM1mkI with more RAM and a new software, at the highest possible price tag, nothing really exciting .
    I'm more and more afraid they'll do what they did with Vaio, sell all that was already made or projected by Olympus, let the brand die when done and finally sell the name to become a generic brand for mugs, t-shirts and low cost items such as USB keys or bluetooth speakers.

      OM-1 got a new sensor when it was released. This new has the same sensor. I do not see that a real problem. 20Mpix is quite enough for most cases. I would take Live GND or a 26Mpix sensor. LiveGND is much more useful.

    Micro Four thirds strong point over the full frame is wildlife and birding. The smaller, super sharp lenses make it easier to toss gear in a pack and hike, or for older people to keep shooting. The smaller sensor in the micro four thirds will have better IBIS. I still have my R5 and big glass for the wildlife and birding focus but after the OM1, OM1-ii, and G9ii. I am looking at selling my Canon. I am okay with a G9ii or the GH6ii (when that comes out) for video and an OM-1 for light video and stills. A perfect setup of creators, most use video cameras and still cameras anyway, and with Panasonic and OM Systems, they can share classes. Panasonic will likely win in the video (it even handily beets my Canon R5), and OM Systems is the perfect still camera with good enough footage. I think it was smart for OM Systems to build up their strengths (stills and light video) to be competitive or better and then add some video or even cede high-end video to Panasonic. The OM 1 addressed focus for birding and wildlife, and the OM1 ii adds the hardware computational and memory beef (maybe just memory they have not confirmed computational capabilities) and autofocus for portrait folks.

    I don’t mind the OM-1 MKII is a bit of a warm up refresh. What I am concerned is zero attention to the rest of the line -Pen and OM-5.
    Now, since they have pivoted 200% to outdoor/wildlife at this point I am not sure the Pen line carries on. OM Systems simply doens’t have the resources people think they have.
    To be honest, this is starting to look a bit too close to how 4/3rds went down. I think OM Systems at best will be a new Pentax (nothing super wrong with that, you still get repairs/support). But if the birding market is not that big, I think this isn’t heir way to oblivion.
    Panasonic already has a foot in the exit door.

      OM SYSTEM has picked its road and it is the outdoors, wildlife etc. I think it is a wise move to concentrate on a niche genre. Being one of the or the best on that niche can be profitable. I have always said this. Would I liked to have a Pen-F Mark II with OM-1 mark II AF, yes. If hat was paired with a high quality 20mm pancake. I would consider switching from Ricoh GR3x to that combo. Are they going to go that road also, I do not thin they will.

      @@ForsgardPeter I sort of also thought about that and I see your point. But this basically means m43rds is not what was originally proposed and they will sure also lose customers outside of the market.
      It also remains to be seen how profitable that niche is. Also OM Systems does not have the resources people think they do - they are really operating with a rather thin budget.
      So in a way, it’s understandable.. wildlife is where the size difference still applies. But it still strikes me as a strategy of going to the top of your house to avoid the tsunami waters rather than build a new house where the tsunamis can’t reach.
      What would be imho, doing such? Do small pro, pro cameras that are smaller. Like say, EM5MKII body class tops in size, pack all you can, and pay attention to things like re-releasing the smaller primes in weather sealed form.
      I don’t think the competition can touch that. You can see Nikon released a new zoom lens for their Z mount that while not exactly as small as the m43rds one, it’s still much smaller so they are going after that wildlife market with it too.
      But anyhow, I think we can see how OM Systems products will lose a lot of appeal to those of us that went into m43rds not for wildlife/birding.

    A couple of comments.
    5:38 Peter you are spot on about OM System's strategy of maximizing margin on revenue. That is EXACTLY what we are seeing.
    OM System is too small a company now, they don't have the resources to design and develop many new products in parallel anymore. Instead, we are seeing one or two hero products each year, like the OM1, now the OM1II, the 150-400, the new macro lens. The rest of the lineup is recycled older products with R&D expenses already covered, like the OM5 which essentially was a slightly crippled E-M1III in an inferior quality body. Or the re-issue of the 9-18mm - I found that interesting though, the retail price is USD700. The original 9-18mm also retailed for USD700, so one could argue that the new lens is actually cheaper when accounting for inflation. However, since there was probably hardly any R&D involved in re-issuing this lens, OM System will have a much higher margin on the new lens. The original lens will probably have the same glass formula, possibly even the same auto-focus motor - I suspect the new lens is just a cosmetic re-issue with the new design language for the housing - so getting that old version used might still be a great option. I got mine for a steal on Ebay. The one design flaw with the original design is a ribbon cable inside the lens that breaks when extending the lens from its locked position too many times. I hope they fixed that.
    As to that Sigma lens. Ridiculous. I have no issue with the concept of taking a Sigma lens design and adapting it to Micro Four Thirds. I bought and still own the Olympus 100-400, which is also based on a Sigma lens. It's ridiculous though to take a full frame design which is TWICE as large as it would need to be and then charge TWICE the amount of money for it, when the same lens with a different mount costs HALF the price on other systems. This reeks of desperation.
    Regarding the image quality with the MC20 attached: that is a moot argument. Getting into that focal length range and subject distance with that magnification, atmospheric effects will be the much bigger factor in image quality and that will be completely out of control for the photographer or the lens. If you take an image at 1200mm with a 2x crop factor for magnification, the lens and tele-converter play a very small role for image detail, contrast and sharpness. Weather, air quality, humidity etc. have a much greater effect at that point.
    As for the OM1II - nice camera. But I'll stick with my E-M1III thank you very much. It does everything I need and the image quality is essentially identical to the OM1 and OM1II. USD2,400, plus tax, plus new accessories like batteries, grip, charger add up to too much for what would be a very minor incremental upgrade for how I use that camera system.
    The brand name OM System is not a very strong brand name by the way. It's a poor choice. It should have been just "OM". "System" in a brand name? Really? Personally, I do not think OM System will last very long. They are being crunched, being stuck in between a hard place and a rock. They are forced to go with a high margin product strategy - that means either premium products for a premium price or products with no or low R&D sold with a high margin. The OM1II clearly is marketed as a premium product. But how large is the market of photographers willing to spend USD2,400 for a Micro Four Thirds body and lenses which are also very expensive now, when they can buy into Canon RF mount, or Nikon Z mount at comparative cost for the same use cases? And selling a Sigma lens for twice the price other systems are charging for the same lens is a move that consumers will take notice of. I think it would have been better if Ricoh had bought Olympus instead of JIP.

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good points here. About the price and comparising with other brands. OM-1 Mark II is a great camera for the target customer OMDS is targeting. One of the best at its class. Similar cameras from other cost a lot more. This camera should be compared to Canon R3, Sony A9 cameras. If we are only looking at the sensor size, yes you can get a FF camera with less money. It won't have the same features and is certainly not that good for what OM-1 is meant for.

    • @thedarkslide
      @thedarkslide 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ForsgardPeter Wishful thinking, Peter. Nobody in the market for a wildlife setup in the budget range of the OM1 will compare the OM1(II) to a R3 or A9. The OM1 needs to compete against the Canon R6II or other cameras in that price range and spec range for non-professional consumers. Amateur consumers make purchases primarily by budget, not by comparing spec sheets. Professionals don't care that much about price, they want the best image quality and utility to get their shots - when professionals compare the OM1(II) against the R3 or A9, they will buy (or rent) the R3 or A9, not the OM1 because money is not an issue for a professional, but the much better image quality, especially in low light makes this an easy decision for them as image quality is more important than cost. Professionals will pass on cost to their clients at the end of the day. A consumer cannot. And adding insult to injury, the size and weight advantage of Micro Four Thirds is evaporating too - the G9II is no smaller or lighter than the S5II for example, that OM System Sigma lens is actually heavier(!!) than the same lens for full frame! Why?!
      The way to look at the MFT format now: it's a niche system for few niche use cases that have little to do with the original value proposition of MFT: being great value, small, compact and portable with comparable quality to larger systems. That value proposition went completely out of the window. Now, the MFT value proposition is specialized niches at a premium price point, e.g., Panasonic going after video (even that seems to be a second class citizen at Panasonic now that they do L Alliance), Olympus going after macro and wildlife, focusing almost ALL of their marketing effort there - you know Peter, because OM System no longer has a place for photographers like you, or Joe Edelman in their brand ambassador ecosystem. The problem with picking these niches: Olympus is putting all their eggs into one basket, and it's a VERY competitive basket with competition that will execute innovative research and product development at a much faster pace than the tiny OM System company will ever be able to. Take IBIS - I don't think Olympus is an innovation leader in that technology anymore - I did buy the Nikon Zf and the IBIS in that camera with a sensor almost four times as large as MFT is pretty much on par with my E-M1III, and Nikon innovated with allowing the sensor to pivot its IBIS to exactly where the focus point for the exposure has been set in the frame - we are seeing innovation in that space from everyone and any advantage OM System has now is due to sensor size, not technical innovation. The same challenge will haunt them across the board.

    • @ForsgardPeter
      @ForsgardPeter  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is not wishful thinking. The specs of R3, A) and also the Z9 form Nikon are similar cameras what it comes to specs. All those three are most likely better cameras than OM-1 Mark II, but cost a lot more. If we look at the specs, R6II does come close, but it is 700€ more expensive than OM-1 Mark II, at least here in Finland. I would say that the Om-1 Mark II is one of the best choices for a bird and wildlife photographers right now.
      I agree that the size advantages has gone. FF cameras are the same size nowadays. The Zf's IBIS is clever technology. In order to survibe OM SYSTEM needs to innovate and Live GND is a good example. They have been or Olympus rather, the pioneers of computational photography features. They need to continue that in order to keep in business.

    I bought my first Oly because it was small/compact/light after a life time of big heavy film and digital full frame stuff . That first Oly was the Em1 ; the best camera I have used (50 years of carrying cameras) . Wish I had that in my wedding photography days!
    Then I "upgraded" to the Em1 mark 2 :( . Yeah Ok , it's bloody good but the em1 is still the best to used . Only downside is the lack of the swivel screen for my low down camera angles.
    The OM-1 did nothing me . Nothing new that I needed or even wanted .
    I can only hope I can keep the 2 x Em1 bodies (both need servicing ; if that it is possible) and the 1 x Em1 mk 2 going until I have no use for them as I have no intention of buying a more modern Olympus camera . I just don't need any more bells , whistles in a bigger package . Strange how my first "pro" camera bought back the 1980s is still doing what it has also done and no battery required . That was a fully manual Nikon Fm2 .
    Photography has not really changed ; it's still using light and shadows to record a subject with the right compensation , and no new camera can actually improve those skills

    Hi Peter, interesting thoughts.
    - the new Sigma Lens: First of all, this lens is to big IMO. If I want this lens, I would by it as ff lens. Second I wondering for what reason I need 2400mm equivalent angle with the 2 times converter? Even the 1.4 with a 1680mm equivalent angle makes not that much sense. The diffraction blur then determines the image quality at the given aperture of f/12.6. The given f/6.3 is already on the boarder of diffraction blur by the MFT system. The sharpness will decrease physically at higher aperture. Furthermore you will decrease the quality even more by the atmospheric disturbances. You probably won't get the results you expect from this narrow angle of view. The lens would be nice, if it were calculated for the image circle of mft and therefore significantly smaller and lighter. The ability to use the converter is not a reason to buy for me personally. If you want nice and sharp photos you just have to get closer to the subject.
    - the new wide angel lens: nice lens IMO worth to buy as a small and light landscape lens.
    - the OM1 II: I will properly buy one. The increased power of the af compared to my E-M1 III is the main reason for me. The GND filter is nice to have, for me personal it’s easier to adjust my pictures in poste. If I don't have enough dynamic range, exposure bracketing or HDR helps. A look at the histogram is enough to see this. But having is better than needing 😉

    I agree with you. Video is becoming more and more important.

    The irony is that if my memory serves me well, JIP/OMDS stated in the early days their intent on focusing more on the video marke!

      Yes, they did say that. Was it official or just someone in side OMDS, not sure.

    The new lens is, from my research an m43ds Sigma Sport, in NZ dollars the Sigma standard sport version retails for $1600, the OM one is going to cost in the vicinity of $4270 ! why ? this is not good from OM Systems from my perspective. I would love to be able to afford the 150-400 F4 Pro and that is a magic lens but it would mean selling a couple of Kidneys ! That won't happen !. The new Camera sounds great but its not worth the dollars to upgrade for me. Cheers from NZ

    „I‘m not here to make fun of this release”
    It’s kinda telling what’s in the back of your mind when you start the video off like that.

      That is not what I said. If you quote please quote correctly. I said that I did not want to make this video, but I got so many questions.

      That’s what you said at around 01:07
      I mean, fair enough, I didn’t quote you correctly, but I didn’t change what you said that drastically. I was going off memory.
