    This is an extreme rounded off fastener situation. I will be doing more testing on other types of rounded off fasteners as well as using them in every day situations. STAY TUNED!

      neil that long cordless is designed for reach not power.
      30ft-lb is the safe limit to not cross thread fasteners. The Milfuckee will power right through the threads and strip them out.

      could you have used a sized down regular flank drive in either metric or sae which ever fit the best since you grounded the fasterners a little too much?

  • @clayferguson340
    @clayferguson340 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I bought 3 sets
    Deep and short 3/8 drive standard
    1/4 drive deep metric absolutely love it
    My tool guy walked to the shop bolt bin all grade 10 bolts jacked it up with a adjustable wrench in the vise . I removed all of them I highly recommend these for people who deal with messed up nuts and bolts

    Their tight tolerances are built around a hex fastener, therefore you need some part of that original fastener intact for it to work properly. In the case of the FDX sockets, they grab close to the center of the flat part of the hex. In order for them to work, you need a flat portion of the fastener to still be there for the socket to grasp. Grinding down each corner AND side of the fastener now takes that fastener down to a smaller size and now your tight tolerances that the sockets are designed around are no longer there.

    My $10,000 worth of sockets is not obsolete? Woo hoo!!!!
    To be fair it looked like you touched the flats with the grinder....
    I do appreciate the unbiased review.

    Thanks and great video, I normally push down on a socket when wrenching fasteners, especially when using a deep. It may have made a difference in this test.

    Flank drive xtra are designed to grab on the flat spots and you grinded the whole nut down which downsized the nut. When you round a nut with a socket and use the flank drive Xtra they work great. I'm probably never come up against a grinded off nut lol

    They seem to be crap. I don't really see the need at this point. They made their flank drive sockets with a tighter tolerance. It slightly moved the direct pressure applied to the fastener in a tad more towards the flat away from the corner. You took away the flat therefore it would not work. If you have a slightly rounded fastener you are better off using a turbo and throwing it away like you normally would. I do like the larger engraving and I do like the raised edges to give you a better grip to pull it from the tool. This tool serves no purpose in my box. My ranking? 2 wrenches down!

    I have handled those sockets and they do seem like they would work in real world situations, like a nut or bolt that lost a size or 2 due to rust. The price kept me from pulling the trigger.

  • @k9cop998
    @k9cop998 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Holes in the test. When you grind something down two sizes smaller then the normal size, of course, it will slip. I have them in 1/4”, 3/8” in both mm and SAE. I USE them every day, and they work and work great. There is no ”Perfect” socket that will take off every rounded fastener. But, the xtra sockets do take off rounded blots. The are the best I have found to take off normally rounded bolts. SnapOns Xtra do work. I own SnapOn, Mac, Cornwell, and Matco, we find SnapOn’s sockets are the best on the market.

    I’d suggest trying to round off a bolt using the wrong size socket like a 5/8 on a 15mm bolt then try. That’s what I have seen the most rounded off bolts were people don’t know what they are doing just grab something that catches

    Darn, I really wish you had popped a turbo socket on there. The stuff you work on is probably too new, but I really wonder how well these things work on rusty exhaust hardware. My SOP for exhaust stuff is to pound on a smaller socket, heat, pray then give it some torque. Not having to hammer on a socket would be nice. I was also thinking about all the Subaru 10mm bolts when doing a timing belt, valve covers and/or headgaskets. Those always frequently rust down to 9-9.5mm. And of course Ford’s love of 7-8mm fasteners.

Think I'll hammer the rust loose and go with my new FDX Metric sockets I bought the other day for $175 ish American before taxes. Probably could've got them cheaper but there was another customer on the truck so my haggling skills couldn't be used plus the boss wasn't around. His driver was running the truck. IF they perform well them the standard set may be next.

  • @after6tuning
    @after6tuning 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree. use a cheapo socket one size too big and use an impact gun and round the bolt/nut down. sometimes one size up can still do the job, in this case start two sizes up and then one size up. this would be closer to real world rounding vs cutting off the edges. The idea of these fdx sockets is they grip further away from the corner but not exactly the middle of the flat.

  • @JTylerRoss
    @JTylerRoss 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The FDX sockets are marketed as having more turning power than flank drive sockets. ie...more torq before rounding off a nut or bolt. Not specifically for rounded nuts and bolts. Turbo sockets are for rounded nuts and bolts.

    I have the fdx. So far I love them. Pulling a pressure plate last guy to do the job rounded all the 10mm bolts. Was going to smash a 3/8 onto them but the fdx pulled them like butter. I really like how well they hold a bolt alto to get in into a tight corner. I admit they are very tight but I’m going to use them as my go to sockets. I figure if they save me any time at all they were well worth it.

    My Snap On dealer showed these sockets (and our shop bought 1 set so far and had his display board with rounded bolts .. The sockets look the same inside but I never actually tried one on a good bolt (will have to) , but the only way the socket could be tighter on a bolt would be if the socket isn't actually the size stamped on the side .. A 12mm socket would have to be 11.? mm ... Is that right..?

    Ha, here in Wisconsin, we get fasteners just like that on Isuzu w4 light duty trucks. The metal they use just deteriorates and rusts away. Don't see much of that on class a trucks, just mostly the foreign stuff. I have an old set of metrinch (the German made ones) I received as a gift in the early 90s maybe even late 80s, but the sockets and wrenches fit most metric and sae, with one socket, and work great for really rounded nuts and bolts. Haven't broken one yet, used chrome on 3/8 impact, I know, bad idea, but nonethe less, never broken . Warranty is still valid.
    Doesn't snap on sell "turbo sockets" for an exuberant amount of money, seems like the same type of tool, just chrome and ov erpriced. I'm lucky enough to have mostly all the tools I need (28 year tractor trailer mech) heck I've got the same snap on box from 1989 when I traded my school 7 drawer lower from snap on. They won't warranty the lifetime box, but that's another story, and why I refuse to give my hard earned money so his kids can go to college. Just my opinion but, I'm trashing anyone.

  • @stever5887
    @stever5887 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Joel--I don't believe you talked about it, but in addition to being a Flank Drive Plus socket, is it actually smaller internally than a comparable flank drive socket? In other words, given a 9/16" flank drive socket, is the comparable FDP socket actually about 8.5/16", with the narrowing caused by a more "rounded" (i.e., prominent) flank? Is it now shaped such that it grips at the CENTER of each flank to deal with the rounded-over portion of the nut or bolt? I hope this makes sense; I hadn't heard of these new sockets before, and I'm struggling to understand how they differ from standard sockets. Turbo sockets work by decreasing in size the deeper you go into them; in addition, they have sharp, helical flanks (spiraling inward) that dig into the fastener to further grip it. They are very effective at removing rounded-over or frozen/corroded nuts and bolts. While the FDP sockets are interesting, I'm not sure I would rush out to buy a set (or multiple sets) of them. It would seem that you're going to replace that fastener anyway, so it doesn't matter how badly you tear it up removing it with a turbo socket. One other note: Turbo sockets work on the wedge principle; they can handle several sizes of fasteners within each socket size, making a set practical for both SAE and Metric use.

    You should compare them to Macs precision torque sockets.. I don't own them other than a 1/2 set I got got free with my long 1/2 ratchet, most of my sockets are snap on but I gotta say those mac sockets work really good on rounded nuts.

    Here's how you test the "new tech".. TIGHTEN a low grade fastener, like chinesium grade, or even brass. Tighten till the head strips with regular snap on socket, with electronic torque adapter. Do the same with the new FDX socket.. See which does better. See what the marks look like on the fastener.. Which grabs further away from the points? Interpret the results. Post video.

    I use a torch and zip gun in some instances as it's only a $1 bolt if even that much.

    I wonder how they would compare against turbo/twist sockets?

    Yea Iam just goin to stick to my normal snap on sockets and use my turbo socket for stripped bolts.

    I would like to see the stripped nut test redone with nuts that were actually rounded by a wrench. Maybe try that instead of using a grinder.

    Should have used an open-end wrench to round them

    Can you get the sae set and see if it might be closer to the size after you round the fastener

    In a scenario like in this video, I would just hammer something like a harbor freight 12 point the next size down. If that doesn’t work, the cutting torch is your best friend. It can’t be tight if it’s a liquid.

      I thought that too. I think the ONLY time I've ever used a 20mm socket was for this trick.

    Ok I have a dumb question. Are the tolerances on these too tight for comfortable every days use? If not would you suggest using this set as an every day set for bolts that are perfectly fine?
