    When I think about it that whole "taking precautions to protect your privacy opens you up to intrusion" is very true. If you're taking noticeable precautions and lengths to make sure people can't intercept or snoop in on your data, you're opening yourself up to be prime suspect of suspicious activity; regardless if that's the case. The paradox of privacy...

    However what could of been mentioned, who actually owns the VPNs. The thing is you have to do your research and find out if they're actually logging the info you put in or not. Some companies are great, some are crap and others... Well even the govt owns some services.

    Would VPN providers utilize MPLS by default? I wonder if that would allow for faster connections if it was configured at the client end as well. I'm sure new protocols will come along to speed things up, and there is always Internet 2 which probably isn't that far off.

    please explain proxys

    • @mitchellcarter8973
      @mitchellcarter8973 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rentamobtv Thought I'd just add that your ISP (Internet Service Provider) can see all of your traffic on a proxy, and is not a replacement for a VPN in terms of privacy besides having a different IP address.

    • @ThomasVanhelden
      @ThomasVanhelden 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      rentamobtv No...? VPNs are nothing like proxies...

    • @ThomasVanhelden
      @ThomasVanhelden 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      rentamobtv They are fundamentally different and don't even serve the same purpose at all. Their infrastructure is different (server vs network), the layers on which they operate are different (application/transport vs network),...
      A proxy is just one server which handles and caches HTTP requests for users. The client connects to a certain port on the proxy, he sends his HTTP request to the proxy instead of directly to the origin server. Then the proxy looks for the requested file in it's cache, if it's there it sends his copy to the client. If it's not it will connect to the origin server and send it a HTTP request for the fie. It's main purpose is to reduce the response time for a client request and to reduce traffic on an institution's access link to the Internet.
      The purpose of a VPN is to provide an IP network for institutions that extend over multiple geographical regions, so that its hosts and servers can send data to each other in a secure and confidential manner.
      You know what a private network is right? It's a stand-alone physical network - including routers, links and a DNS infrastructure - that is completely separate form the public Internet.
      A VPN is virtual, which means it uses the existing public Internet instead of purchasing, installing, and maintaining it's own physical network infrastructure.
      Their working is closely related to that of a VC, each router, server, host, ... is aware of the virtual network and is maintaining state (resources, routing tables,...).
      A VPN uses some other routing protocol like MPLS which routes packets using labels instead of looking at the IP adreses to route packets. This means that routers can forward packets along routes that would not be possible using standard IP routing protocols, e.g. to reroute traffic over a precomputed failover path in response to link failure. This requires every router in the VPN to be a label-switched router.
      I can go on and on about how they differ because they are nothing alike, but I think you get my point.

    • @GnanaPrakash86AP
      @GnanaPrakash86AP 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think proxies is where you try to fool the website you are accessing that you are somewhere else in the world by giving it a different IP from what your computer has. It doesn't require a different computer to be using that IP and doesn't require a different computer to be turned on to channel the data through it.
      It's basically giving a wrong house address at your area's library.

    • @ThomasVanhelden
      @ThomasVanhelden 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In simple words:
      When you request a web page, your computer sends a HTTP message to the server which contains that particular web page, we'll call this server the origin server. This server will then send his answer (the web page) to your computer.
      A proxy is a server, between you and the internet (not necessarily though). Now, instead of sending the HTTP message to the origin server, you send the HTTP message to the proxy server. Then, the proxy server will send this HTTP message to the origin server and he will send the response back to you.
      The proxy server will also cache (save) this response in his storage so when the next client requests that same page, it can send the response without sending a request to the origin server.
      The original intention of a proxy server is to reduce the response time for a client request and to reduce traffic on an institution's access link to the Internet.
      Your internet provider has some proxy servers in it's infrastructure and every web request you make will probably be handled by that proxy.
      A lot of people and probably a lot of people who watch NCIX will use a proxy server as some form of privacy. Because the web server will only see the IP address of the proxy server and the origin server will not know the original request originates from your computer.
      Another popular use is to access blocked websites in institutions. Because they block the origin servers and not the proxy servers.
      Hope this explains it! If you still have questions, feel free to ask!

    So vpn just allows encryption between the two computers
    -server(the one hosting)
    -client(the one that's accessing)
    My question is that everyone speaks of free vpns and paid vpns. I understand they offer security(embedded Anti-Malware,encryption methods) and other features like faster upload speeds(sometimes), cloud storage and cached internet pages,etc. So with all that said what is the difference between using the one windows provides you with? You know ..
    etwork connections >file >>new incoming connections
    What kind of procedures would you have to do to make this secure? Does this have to do with securing firewall ports, antimalware, etc.? I mostly want to know the cons

    I actually get faster speeds when on my VPN is on then I do when I'm not. This is because companies like Charter and Time Warner (personal experience with both) use cached servers that they own to "help speed up the web". Those cached servers are actually there to save those companies $$$. Using a VPN you are able to bypass these cached servers and get faster speeds, especially TH-cam.
    Not to mention depending on your area during certain times your internet will get throttled, even if they say they don't, they do, it's in the agreement you agreed to. VPNs can get around this.

    In many countries, there are many blocked or censored websites, for political, religious or moral reasons, vpn can let people bypass that, so that is another reason that you haven't mentioned,,

    You should do a video on cloning and and imaging a drive, on what the differences are and when to do it.

    Thanks for the quick look at VPNs. I am currently running vyprvpn and though they are little more pricey (14.99 per month) the speeds are fantastic and average around 10 Mps once up and running. Currently I am waiting on my case and monitior to arrive and I can complete my first build, holla. Would you mind touching on the topic of bios. I purchased the asus z97-A mobo for a couple of different reasons, price at performance, ports and someone said they have a great bios. I know little about it but know linus could explain more. Thanks again for your videos.

    what if a wifi network blocked VPN's from connecting?is there a way to bypass this? for example.my school blocked snapchat from working on the wifi and a couple days later everyone started using VPN's so my school desided to block the VPN servers from connecting to the wifi.

    I use VPN to play CSGO. In game, I can see my latency (ping). Question is: what is this ping, when using VPN? Latency from my computer -> VPN -> game server? Or just VPN -> game server?
