    I caught some mullet a fishing pole one time. We were fishing using canned biscuit dough for bait with small hooks, and we were using fishing poles with corks. (not reels). We were standing on a low bridge at Garden City Beach, South Carolina. As I seem to recall, the tide was an important factor that would determine the best time to fish for them. I want to think 🤔 it was a mid tide- either falling or rising- It’s been a while, but I recall that’s what would determined when we would go to fish at that spot. However, once they started biting, they were swarming. They did not wait to hit the bait.
    As your video demonstrated, they can get off the hook pretty easily, however since we were pole fishing, we simply would lift them from the water. Some would fall off the hook-lol. But that was part of the challenge. Thanks for posting the video! That brought back good memories of when I was a kid.

      Hi there! So glad that you enjoyed watching the video! Those mullet aren't half tough to catch, but it has become a bit of an annual tradition, and it's always great fun watching them swim around the bait, hoping that they will bite. The tide is definitely a major factor in this kind of fishing. Luckily for me though, the place that I catch them has a man made "estuary" sort of thing on one side, so there is always water there whenever I go. From what I have seen, the fishing over there in Florida looks pretty special (though I have never been myself). How great that you have gotten to grow up with those waters right at your doorstep. I have never heard of using biscuit dough before, but I plan to try out some different baits on my next trip, so perhaps I'll give it a go. Anyways, it's nice to hear that watching this brought back some good memories from your past (as I am sure it will for me too, someday in the future...). Tight lines, and all the best!! - VSF.

      Sounds like we both grew up the same way I fished like that the same way I’d grab a 13 foot bream buster put light line a cork split shot weight small bream hook and a worm like I was bream fishing then I’d go down to the river i live on throw out some chicken feed watch them swarm in and catch them on almost low tide the best times were last hour of low tide and first hour of the tide coming back in from dead low so those 2 or 3 hours on those tides was awesome fishing as soon as the bait started to even touch the water you had a bite there would be a school of them my cousins caught 54 in 2 hours one time it was great except for the summer heat I don’t do it that much anymore because our dock is collapsed on the side we used to catch the mullet on of course 🤦 so now we have to fish the boat ramp that’s at our dock and it’s not as good in that spot so I don’t do it anymore hardly plus I’m 21 and all I do is work it was fun doing it as a little kid and when I was a teenager good times

    I have like 3 years trying to catch mullet with a hook, ive seen your videos but no luck. Every time i see your videos I get a bit of hope to prove my father-in-law wrong, we have a little competition everytime we go out fishing. But yeah I bought like 50 spinner baits no luck i tried bread it would come off too easily ive tried a hook with a piece of a chip bag shiny side up and no luck. KEEP POSTING VIDEOS OF MULLET FISHING! 🤙👍

    • @VentureSF
      @VentureSF  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there Christian! I am sorry to hear that mate 😄. In all honesty though, I can not relate to a comment more than this one. Mullet fishing is super tough and can be a real pain in the ----. In the videos where I catch them, I am genuinely spending 2 or 3 hours trying to tweak all the different variables. Perhaps it is the ridiculousness of it all that makes them so fun to catch. In terms of advice... I can not stress enough, the need to get them feeding. Your chances are multiplied exponentially. They are pretty shy so try to keep out of view. Also, as a pose to common theory, I tend to try and use the crust of the (fresh) bread to bury the hook in. This is favorable for mullet as they feed primarily off the surface and the crust floats a little. It is also easier for the fish to eat with their soft mouths (they cant really break down a rock hard ball of bread). So try to get bread with some what substantial crust. Other then that.. I guess persistence is key. One last point; the idea with spinners or spoons is to cause chaos. A mullet will not normally chase a lure like a predatory fish. The only way it will work is if you can bring the lure/spinner/spoon over a decent sized shoal (Im talking around 30-60 fish). This will spook and shock the shy natured fish. I am not entirely sure weather they strike from instinct, self defense, or agression, but it works very occasionally. I have proven this method in both Europe and Australia. Overall bread is the best way to go though. Hope this helps a bit, I will try and do some more mullet videos when Im next in the country (perhaps Christmas). I assume you dont live near me, but I would totally offer to come help ya try and catch them 🐟🐠. Anyways, thanks for watching, and tight lines mate!

    I dont know where you fish but I go to this place in NSW, Australia called bobbin head. The mullet are legit teasing us at the side of the wharf swimming around I threw prawns at it. DO I just give it bread and let hobble around? Do I throw it on top of them? Or let the bread around 1 metre away from the fish and let it drift towards the bream? Cheers

    • @VentureSF
      @VentureSF  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, happy I did ahaha! Unfortunately I was a little limited on gear (being on holiday), but I would have used a lighter rod if there was one. Fair point about the drag 😁, I had been getting into the habit of playing fish on light gear like that, because in the canals where I live it it is very tricky to avoid the banks on either side if you just let them run. I have heard that mullet also like to feed on the bottom, and I hope to catch one that way some day. But I do like it when I can see them though, hence the surface bait :)

    I throw a whole slice of bread next to the bank the trick is to keep dead still they only recognise movement and when they are all feeding on the bread I shoot the centre of the bread with my shotgun You then need to scoop them out as they regain their wits in about 30 sec. Works every time.

    • @VentureSF
      @VentureSF  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries, couldn't agree with you more mate! There is nothing more fun that fishing with light tackle ay. Those rods were all I could get my hands on, since I don't actually live there (visiting on holiday) so all my gear is back home. I did manage to bring a light rod with me this year, so that should be in videos over the next few weeks :)

    Mix some laying mash chicken feed with mud and throw it where you fish

      Thats a new one! Sounds like it would work. Will have to give it a go... probably pretty soon too, as I am planning to do another video with mullet soon.

      Hi there, sorry I missed this. Yes, bread was the bait in this video (seems to be their favorite). I have also caught them on worms in the past too.
