"Do they have exaggerated body proportions?" Basically, if your female characters have breast size larger than A, then you're being sexist and/or misogynist.
People saying "why do you even care" don't seem to understand that having to click on the "he/him" option when creating a male character is basically the same thing as having a dialogue box asking you to agree with the idea that a man isn't necessarily a human male. It forces the player to accept the ideology. I don't want to play a game that does that.
By that logic wouldnt it mean that not having a choice of prounouns would be forcing people to accept the idea that there are 2 genders? Its looking for a problem that doesnt exist other than for people obsessed with this culture war bs.
The people saying that are the ones who care the most. They are trying to shame you into accepting their ideology or just shut up about it and let them do it. They don't want to know why you care, they want to make you feel bad for talking about it.
The character creator in DA was garbage. It wasn't diverse. It just had specific things included into it that they liked and chose for DEI checkboxes. That does not make it diverse.
Use your fantasy. To gender Personalpronoms is not possible in every language. For example, english: Them/they (or whatever) Guardian. German: Hen Behütere. Now try to translate this from german to english. While playing Veilguard I'm hearing this bs constantly, because the game has to be "diverse". 🤨
@totuudentorvi7781 it's not really an issue if you force that in your games. it adds controversy/attention to your games after all. The problem with all of these AAA flops is more often than not, this is all your game has to offer. You have no gameplay, only UE5slop graphics, low to zero replayability, copypasted lazy mechanics etc.
Absolutely. The only games I've purchased recently are Indie title or releases of classics I enjoyed back in the 8 and 16 bit console days. I don't even look to see what new garbage is coming out from game companies I once loved, because I know it's just going to be over-priced trash with shiny graphics and bloated budgets. I'll take games like Terraria, Core Keeper, Backpack Hero, Vampire Survivors, etc. over stupid garbage like WoW expansions, another 3D FPS clone, or some watered down racing game.
Honestly the pronoun thing is really weird to add, imagine the antagonist is actually using the correct pronoun for the player character? You think the antagonist is going to care or even be respectable to the player character...
I sit on the other side of the fence of this... more.. why would you care what a character sheet says? Unless it DIRECTLY IMPACTS gameplay, it seems strange to get upset about just for the same of it existing lol. If the game is bad, thats cool but it's not "bad because it has pronouns" on the detailed character sheet in the pause menu lol. To clarify, how dragon age did it DID actively influence and had a distinctly negative affect on the game itself. You picking a female rogue that says "she/her" on the character sheet in the pause menu should be met with at most an eye roll lol
@rainbowGZUS7 i think bad actors pushing virtue signalling is more of a VERY vocal minority. There is a difference between having a gender on your character sheet from how veilguard implemented things as well, let's be real honest about this lol.
Gears of war had hyper masculine characters who were able to show emotion. When Dom saw his wife, how heartbreaking was that. But he was also tough and stoic and wasnt gushing about his feelings the whole game. This new western way of making games is killing my love for gaming.
Same same… im easing myself off gaming im finding other hobbies. Ive been doing a lot of fishing and working out more often. I go fishing at least 4 times a week. And i work out heavily 4 days a week.
There's nothing wrong with emotional characters, or even t gender people. The problem is when they are written in a ham-fisted way that is totally unbelievable. Dom was written perfectly because it fit the setting, the established character, and males could relate. Other characters don't have to be the same, but you can't just totally rewrite an established character and expect original fans to support it or be able to connect to it, like Ms has done with master chief and even Marcus to some degree.
So let's actually wait and see if there is some sort of agenda being pushed. I don't see single one yet, and no one else did either with the tens of hours of gameplay that has been shown over the week. No one cared until we saw a leaked image of the character creator.
@@Mmachine88 the moment they placed the pronoun sht in the character creator that where a sane person consider a refund., you dont have a game anymore, you have a propaganda tool.

If it’s important to some people that the pronoun option be added to a game, why isn’t it equally reasonable that other people feel it important to not have pronoun options in the game?
Because that's not how optional features work. Adding additional optional features is generally welcomed because people who don't like the feature don't need to use the feature. I don't like characters that look like inhuman blue aliens but it doesn't mean that I won't play games that allow for creation of extreme/unrealistic characters, I just choose to not make such characters.

@@lizzaroo I actually prefer constraints that limit appearance customization options at least in multiplayer games. If it's character creation in a single-player game, I don't mind. The problem to me with letting people make anything they want in a multiplayer game is that it can ruin immersion for other players. For example, if a multiplayer NFL game lets me design a running back who is 4'11 and morbidly obese, that's gonna break immersion for most people. A running back should generally be constrained to someone quite tall and lean with powerful quad muscles.
@@AnonyMous-og3ct I can totally understand the need for limitations in multiplayer games. I would also wish way more games had an option I remember from Gw2 pvp. Where on your end you could set every player to show as the base model of that race so it would cut down on the clutter from outfits and weapon skins.
@@lizzaroo I like that option very much! That seems like a nice way to balance out people who want to go wild with their custom appearance without borderline trolling everyone else. I don't want to be a jerk that makes requests which deprive players of options they want, but I'm in the camp that most values immersion and being transported into a fictional world so much that my mind starts to halfway believe I'm actually there. So I strongly favor character designs that seem very "plausible" in the context of the setting/lore and functions they perform. For another example, there's a wide range of body types I could accept for a dwarf without breaking my immersion. But it doesn't make sense to me to see a 8-foot tall dwarf, or else I'm left asking why one of the tallest characters I encountered in the game -- and towering even over elves -- is a dwarf. Dwarfism by its very definition and etymology refers to someone much shorter than average. By "plausible", I don't necessarily mean "realistic". After all, what does that mean in the context of fantasy? But more just in the sense that it makes sense in the context of the lore, and isn't too contradictory to the role of the character and the physics of the world. Or at least "beautiful". For example, it might require some stretch of the imagination to accept a 5'4 Michelle Yeoh beating up a 6'2 tall MMA fighter bare-handed in a movie where she has no magical powers. But she's an excellent athlete and so skilled at martial arts choreography and moves so "beautifully" (in the artistic sense, like "interestingly") that I can suspend my disbelief.
@@AnonyMous-og3ct I think when it comes to almost all media IPs the most important part is consistency. Like you mentioned with dwarves, if the game has always portrayed them a certain way let's say as a bit rowdy and brash it would make no sense to have them be the most polite and humble race all of a sudden. Where as in a game like Borderlands so much absurd and silly stuff happens you don't mind if things don't quite make sense because it has always been like that. Players who already love a franchise want more of that vibe and introducing many new things out of the norm breaks immersion.

Unfortunately, this kind of ideology has been pushed SO HARD that many people now have no interest in parsing out what's good faith or bad faith inclusion. And personally, I don't blame anyone for that. There are so many activists working in this industry now, that it's really hard to trust anything. Also, folks keep asking "Why do you even care?". Because it's immersion-breaking, that's why. These "issues" have been rubbed in everyone's faces for YEARS ad nauseam, so to see it in video games pulls many people right out of their suspension of disbelief.
The reason putting ideology into entertainment (regardless of whether it's fundamentalist Christian ideology, Communist Ideology, Classical Liberal ideology, or Post-Modern ideology) makes games terrible is really quite simple: Adhering to the ideology **COERCES** creative decisions which would otherwise be free to select the choice that is the most fun for the most people. That's what should always be the one and only priority in making a movie, game, TV show, comic, etc. Doing what's fun, what's moving and meaningful to people, and letting academic wankers argue about what it means or doesn't mean. Worse still, post-modern "woke" ideology is a particularly pernicious creative straitjacket, because its purveyors have championed that *literally everyone* is a victim, except the people who reject their agenda. Intersectionality has created a grievance which can be made to fit everyone, and therefore only the most tepid, anodyne characters can be portrayed, for fear of saying the wrong thing.
They keep going for this stuff because they get government money handouts for doing so. It qualifies them for an ESG grant, which of course companies driven by beancounters will go for because that's just more money to pocket. Taxpayer money. And it's unlikely to go away until ESG goes away or at least gets completely overhauled.

Free speech works both ways. Companies are free to add whatever pronoun stuff they want, and just like pay to win, we as customers are free to buy it or not. Simple.

It seems like I ain't gonna buy it just for principle. Let people with personality disorders buy it so they can perpetuate their complexes.
Pronouns is ok for me, BG3 also has gay moments. The problem is if the game gives freedom to the players to choose their own path. Avowed seems to give players freedom to make our own decisions
Stardew Valley is universally loved by both sides of this fight. It is as gay as you make it, or you play straight and never see the gay content. The game allows it but never pushes it. Perfect.
And even then, a few months ago someone tried to force the dev to include pronouns in the game (even tough there is a mod for it), even trying to paint him as a "transphobe" and other phobes for not doing it. There's no winning, some people will never be satisfied, you give a hand, they want the whole arm.
Another game that plays pretty heavily into this is Baldur's Gate 3, it's almost like you can fo this kind of stuff if you actually make a good game, and not a "shoving my opinions down your throat" simulator
I made a male character but chose female style clothing for my stardew valley run. Made one of the first interactions in the game stick with me and love it "Well you look different than I was expecting."

I can not be bothered to put every single game under a microscope to figure out how woke it really is. So if you add pronouns and the woman are not hot I am out. I just take the most obvious sign and leave it at that.

Adding modern political ideology to a medieval fantasy game is like adding modern religion to the lore of a different dimension/world. It completely ruins immersion and is like the devs peaking out from under the costume and set pieces in the game saying, "hey, remember that this is a thing!"
I mean, it depends on how much of a fantasy it is. If the game wants to be some kind of simulation, it doesnt make sense; but at the same time, I don't see people being annoyed by medieval people being the same height as nowadays people, or wearing makeup, or having clean clothes, or unreasonably expensive clothes for the time period (like purple tainted clothes). So, I understand the reality point and I kind of agree, but at the same time most people don't use this kind of argument for other real life questions in games, what kinda makes it sound like political rambling.
@@rimanpele I get your point and you are right about all that stuff. But the difference to the pronoun shit is, that all the things you listed don't try to push an agenda, tons of people are annoyed with plain and simple. These people can they/them all they want but don't force everyone else into your larping fantasy... It would be the same btw with everything else unnaturaly ideological shoved into a game. For example the story of skyrim would all of a sudden start to revolve around Jesus and how wrong it is to "have faith" in the Dragonborn because all you need is Jesus Christ. People would hate that shit xD
The one thing I don't understand about to top surgery scars in a game is that if you believe that you are male, but was only assigned female at birth because you're stuck in a female body, wouldn't you want your game character to reflect who you really are, a man? Just make your character a man if that's who you really are right?
Asmon once again downplaying the identity politics issue. Resources had to be allocated to add these pronoun options from writing code to additional voice lines recorded, scripts modified and in some games character models are unnecessarily complicated. All of this means the company is spending less resources on actual gameplay and story elements. The issue is that it's nonsensical and impacts the overall quality of the game. It absolutely affects gameplay. I remember playing Cyberpunk 2077 and the trans character was attached to an integral quest that you HAD to complete in order to unlock car racing in the game. And when the DLC dropped, you had to complete that quest to buy new cars in the DLC. If you did the quest and did not side with this mentally ill person. Each time you went to the club where they are, he shouts at you and tells you to get out. So the devs actively try to punish players for not falling in line. This is the only character in the whole game that does this without you actively going up to them to initiate dialogue after a quest is done.
All that you mentioned can be done independently from the actual writing and story elements, and a lot of games actually go the clever way around it and just use the main character's name. Agree that it is a waste of resources though. More so that it builds an incentive structure where rabid zealots get well paying jobs, bloat the budgets, and taint the industry.
“Actively punishing you” you can have your conspiracy theories that it’s them trying to push you down an ideological path if you want but having consequences for choices in an RPG is cool. I want my decisions to piss people off, or lock me out of shit. I’m kinda tired of games where you have a option that can please everyone, have access to every weapon, and make a build that can do everything.
@@dwightk.schrute8696 there's no way to do that independently. A game project is one large Capital expenditure. The more that's added, the more the cost goes up. If the budget for the project is already set, then that means some other spend gets reallocated. In either case it's a problem. Either there's an increase in the cost to add them, which means we consumers pay more for the game...for something we didn't ask for or it means reallocating resources from some other area of the development process which impacts the quality of the final product. This is especially the case where you're now hiring consultants to ensure you using the politically correct terms or if you're working on an established IP that had none of that in it before so now you're reworking entire lore to fit that in. e.g. I played Hogwarts Legacy last year and there's the obvious trans character in it. Now in a world of magic, it makes absolutely no sense why you'd even need that in it. If someone has access to magic they'd just change themselves completely and no one would ever know or need to know their pronouns or what they identify as. The game however needed you to know so they added a whole storyline that you had to complete. Take that out and that's less coding, recording, less time and resources, shorter turn around. This stuff adds up eventually
Where do people get the idea they can pick and choose their pronouns? Like, no, language is a contract between multiple people. Too bad, but you don't get to bend language around the shape of your own little person. This is just ridiculous.

yt hid my comment again, but yes i agree. i don't want this comment to be deleted too so i'll reiterate that it's the same way you get nicknames from your friends and don't get to pick them yourself. also people will call them what they are, which is the f-word that ends with k. this internet censorship is also getting pretty ridiculous.

In Final Fantasy X that's not the case, mostly because of the addition of voice acting and not being able to use different names. Before you could just throw it into the text. BUT you CAN still rename the main character Tidus. And throughout the ENTIRE game, they never once say his name in cutscenes or anything like that. They just reference him as "he" or something like that. It's honestly a masterful work in the dialogue and something I always thought was cool. Naming the characters is gone completley now. But it was a nice little in-between that I thought they did beautifully.
Bring forced to participate in their ways is exactly the problem. They can be whatever they want in their own space but I don't want that in my space. Good examples are like Star citizen and BG3 you can be whatever you want but it's not intrusive it's subtle.

Political ideologies are religions for some people.
Yeah, since religion isn’t as big of a thing anymore, people are using politics now as their new shared identity vs being under the same god/gods
They always were.
They keep going for this stuff because they get government money handouts for doing so. It qualifies them for an ESG grant, which of course companies driven by beancounters will go for because that's just more money to pocket.

Basically if a game have pronouns, everyone automatically assume the game will not be just a game but a message delivered in a bad and annoying way, and to this day the assumption is been proven correct. Everyone is just tired of this, a game should be just a game for the sake of being a game
Edit: Ok, i legit forgot about some titles there so the assumption is not always correct. I personally don't have any problems with pronouns, but the majority of the games that have they were just... Bad, so for me it's like a warning

To be fair to obsidian they've probably been developing this for the last decade 😂
They can play hardball for many years if they wish, most of us gamers have a backlog of games we never got to that will keep us busy.
Until they retroactively alter those old games to follow suit. It's already happening.
And there are tons of games made in the last 35 years. Emulators of all the consoles with all the thousands of games, all packed together in a few gigabytes. NES, SNES, SEGA consoles, N64, Playstation, Arcade machines....
I tried to beat the outer worlds so many times and i was a hardcore obsidian simp, i could not slog through it. The only part i liked was the spacers choice vendors conversation tree about how he was trapped in an unending hell by being contractually obligated to wear the giant moon face mask at all times. The rest was a wash, boring combat, boring itemization, contrived story.
I platinumed it because it's a perfect mediocre game. It's got great writing and it's somehow fun to speed run, but its mindblowingly boring everywhere else. Also love Obsidian. It's why I haven't played Pentiment yet
I can not be bothered to put every single game under a microscope to figure out how woke it really is. So if you add pronouns and the woman are not hot I am out. I just take the most obvious sign and leave it at that.

If I see pronouns in the character creator screen then I immediately cross it off my list.
2:00 not even. Its systematically destroying grammar
not just grammar but skewed statistics. People don't seem to yet understand how impactful that is. When we can't even trust the data we have collected.
They legit make it more confusing for people to study English how a small number of people have so much power anyway. These people are talentless, and have no real life skills why do companies need to force them into everything
Given that we have two americans on our screen, it's wild to think the game is the thing destroying grammar.
The mythical "moden audience" will eat this up
Adding modern political ideology to a medieval fantasy game is like adding modern religion to the lore of a different dimension/world.
3:33 she is just salty that she doesn't get these same types of opportunities 😂
The one thing I don't understand about to top surgery scars in a game is that if you believe that you are male, but was only assigned female at birth because you're stuck in a female body, wouldn't you want your game character to reflect who you really are, a man? Just make your character a man if that's who you really are right?
i didnt know they had plastic surgery back then
Asmon once again downplaying the identity politics issue.
Especially considering that his argument is invalid because there is no such thing as a good woke game.
This is all very true. Which in turn affects gameplay and the experience. Asmon was off the mark a little bit with that take.
Gaming for “everyone “ is gaming for very few few people
Where do people get the idea they can pick and choose their pronouns? Like, no, language is a contract between multiple people. You will be referred to by whatever word is more convenient for everyone, depending on the image you reflect in the eyes of your peers. It doesn't match your self-image? Too bad, but you don't get to bend language around the shape of your own little person. This is just ridiculous.
exactly, it works the same way as how you don't get to pick your own nicknames-your friends do that for you. except these freaks probably don't even have friends, so such a concept is foreign to them. they NEED an identity, and if nobody is willing to give it to them, they decide on it themselves.
it's funny because people will end up calling them what they are anyways. freaks.
yt hid my comment again, but yes i agree. i don't want this comment to be deleted too so i'll reiterate that it's the same way you get nicknames from your friends and don't get to pick them yourself. also people will call them what they are, which is the f-word that ends with k. this internet censorship is also getting pretty ridiculous.
If they cared about inclusion, they would make pronouns and body types 1 and 2 to be an optional setting.
Truth. It should be an accessibility option for the disabled.
Good point. Where am I being represented in my beliefs? And they wonder why the stats show the vast majority of people are consuming media made decades ago.

They claimed they just wanted to be free to do their own thing "without judgment." They lied, or at least the most devoted activists did. People don't take kindly to being lied to, particularly when they weren't entirely comfortable with an idea in the first place, but wanted to show kindness & empathy for others, which was later exploited.

Speaking of character customization: One of my favorite things in gaming is FFX naming of Tidus. In all Final Fantasy games leading up to X, you got to rename every character.
