  • Jim Kelly gives helpful tips on how to get the absolute strongest bind with your Fastback tape binding machine. Applying more than 30 years of experience with Powis tape binding technology, Jim explains a variety of methods to ensure pages don't fall out of your tape bound book.
Jim touches on a variety of factors that contribute to a strong and long-lasting bind, including optimal paper weight for your inner pages, how to identify and bind along the paper grain, best practices for print bleed, types of tabs to use, types of papers to avoid, how to jog/square your sheets and how long to let your book rest after being bound before the glue is fully cured.

I'm working with a fastback x15, it's a wonderful machine but there's been a persistent error that I cannot figure out. The strip doesn't match the length of the book in the bind, meaning part of the strip hangs off the book after binding. It happens seemingly at random. Any idea as to how to fix that?

does it work with ink jet paper and printers?

      Hello!
Yes it does! Ink is designed to be absorbed by the paper (as opposed to toner, which sits on top of the paper) and thereby still allows the glue to adhere without issue. This means that with inkjet printing it is even less important to leave a unprinted margin along the bind edge for the glue to adhere to.
However, the recommendation to use un-coated papers (inkjet or digital) still apply; anything that coats the paper (clay coating, toner, etc) can prevent the glue from reaching the paper fibers and weaken the bind.
Let us know if you have any other questions, and thanks for watching!

Am not understanding this, are you saying papers with toner can not bind well?
