I was watching both Asia and BJ react. BJ seemed to like the music and didn't seem to pay attention much to the lyrics. Asia was perplexed as she tried to make sense of what they were singing about. They mentioned that it was the innocence of the song they were attracted to. Innocence was the last thing that could describe what the song was about. it helps to know what the song was used for in the movie "The Graduate". Without that, it is very hard to get a meaning out of the song but there are a few clues. I wondered if she knew who Joe DiMaggio was and why they reference that? What is it they have to hide from the kids? The song is good but without seeing the movie, not easy to interpret.

I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel & had a lot of their records. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. You won't find a bad song. They have had so many hits such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Sound Of Silence", "The Boxer", "Mrs. Robinson", "Scarborough Fair", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.

If my memory’s correct, they did drop the name “Mrs. Robinson” into this song which was already partially written, to make it fit the character in the Graduate. Check out the film, there were other Simon & Gar songs in it…. And it’s a great film. Starred Dustin Hoffman (very young) Anne Bancroft, and Katherine Ross.

I never liked the movie... I know a lot of folks do. To me it was terrible message.. terrible family Dynamics.. very flawed humans behaving badly. I did like the ending when he yells for her in church and she finally breaks free from her mindset and goes.

That's right. Simon was working on a song about Eleanor Roosevelt and when the director asked for a song for his movie "The Graduate" Simon rewrote it as a song about Mrs. Robinson.

God, you make me feel old. The Simon and Garfunkel soundtrack for the 1967 movie, The Graduate, was really unique because the songs intentionally fit the movie plot and characters so perfectly. And the music was so good. Mrs. Robinson, Scarborough Fair, The Sound of Silence… This is not the place to discuss the movie, but Mrs. Robinson, played by Anne Bancroft, has a very special place in film history.

Simon's inclusion of the phrase "coo-coo-ca-choo" is a homage to a lyric in the Beatles' "I Am the Walrus".
"Mrs. Robinson" was awarded two Grammy Awards at the 11th Annual Grammy Awards in 1969.
Mrs. Robinson was played by Ann Bancroft. In 1961, Bancroft met Mel Brooks at a rehearsal for Perry Como's variety show . Bancroft and Brooks married on August 5, 1964, at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau near New York City Hall, and remained married until her death. Their son, Max Brooks, was born in 1972.

I know others have said this, but the character Mrs. Robinson is in the movie, The Graduate. S & G were asked to provide songs for the movie. The director didn't think one of the songs they gave him fit the move quite right and asked if they had anything else. They were working on another song called Mrs. Roosevelt. They changed the name and gave it to the director, and the rest is history. If I'm not mistaken, the song fit in so well, that they used some other S & G songs as the soundtrack to the film, e.g., Sounds of Silence & Scarborough Fair.

The song plays in Forrest Gump while he is receiving the medal of honor from LBJ (LBJ: 'where were you hit son' FG: In the butt ocks sir' LBJ: 'That must be a sight. I'd like to see that', so Forrest does exactly that and moons the president). That scene.

"Mrs. Robinson,” was originally titled, “Mrs. Roosevelt.” Named after the 32nd First Lady. The song had absolutely nothing to do with the plot of The Graduate. Director Mike Nichols, said he needed another song for his movie, Paul Simon told him that they were too busy touring, and that he only had “a song about times past, about Mrs. Roosevelt and Joe DiMaggio and stuff,” but it wasn’t finished yet. It was originally a tribute to Eleanor Roosevelt and the passing of an era; ...a more innocent time. Nichols used it, and Simon changed it to "Mrs. Robinson."

Simon and Garfunkle led the way into folk pop. This album was in everybody's record collection. Simon is a master songwriter/lyricist, one of the finest America has ever produced. For me, each new single was a radio event. And they proceded to produce hit after hit, but every song on the albums was great too. They helped form the worldview of everyone who had ears to hear.

The song premiered in the 1967 movie “The Graduate”, starring Dustin Hoffman and directed by Mike Nichols. Personally I believe the best lyrics in the song are “where have you gone Joe DiMaggio a nation turns it’s lonely eyes to you”. With the turbulent 60s it’s a plea for more innocent times.

You're right, Asia. Simon & Garfunkel had many hits. As did Paul Simon, solo, after the duo broke up. Art Garfunkel had a few hits, solo, also. But, Paul Simon is one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century. He wrote many infectious, fun songs ( _Me And Julio_ , _Cecilia,You Can Call Me Al_, to name a few). He also wrote some more serious, profound songs like _American Tune_ , a song which I hope you two will checkout.
